Goals either side of half-time from Sekou Cisse and Ruben Schaken were enough to secure the points for the home side as the visitors missed out on the chance to go top
Sekou Cisse put Feyenoord ahead in the first-half before Ruben Schaken killed the game off with a goal early in the second half.
The visitors created several chances as they looked for a way back into the match but Ronald Koeman’s men held on and took the three points.
The first chance of the match came inside the first three minutes when a Cisse cross found Schaken unmarked at the back post, the winger brought it down and released a shot but it sailed over the bar.
The visitors’ first goalscoring opportunity came 17 minutes in when Dries Mertens broke forward with the ball and sent Georginio Wijnaldum through on goal only to see the former Feyenoord forward’s shot tipped over by Erwin Mulder.
PSV had another chance to take the lead when Tim Matavz gathered Timothy Derijck’s pass inside the box. The Slovenian striker turned and shot at goal but failed to test the keeper who gathered it with ease.
Feyenoord eventually took the lead five minutes before half time through Cisse. The Ivorian cut out a poor pass from Ola Toivonen and nodded it onto John Guidetti.
The striker then released the 26-year-old through on goal and he slotted it through the legs of Andreas Isaksson with his first touch to put his side ahead at the break.
The hosts extended their lead five minutes into the second-half when Schaken chased a long pass down to the corner and forced 17-year-old Jetro Willems off of the ball. The winger cut in and drove towards goal and was able to knock it past Isaksson to make it 2-0.
Centre-back Wilfred Bouma almost pulled one back for Rutten’s side as he met a Mertens corner at the front post with a header which beat Mulder but saw Karim El Ahmadi clear it off the line.
Willems soon came to PSV’s rescue in preventing a third goal when Schaken ran onto a Guidetti pass down the right-wing and tapped it goalbound past the onrushing Isaksson but the youngster rushed back and cleared the danger as the home side had to settle for a 2-0 win.
The victory pulls fifth placed Feyenoord level on points with arch-rivals Ajax and within four points of PSV who are currently second.
