Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland respond to their 6-1 drubbing at home by Germany by defeating Faroe Islands 4-1 in Torshavn. With Germany currently leading Sweding 3-0 at half time, Ireland are very much still in the hunt for second place.

McGeady with some tremendous trickery in the box, tests Nielsen with a powerful shot, but the goalkeeper is equal to it.
Walters, like a battering ram carries the ball defiantly along the Faroe Islands box but eventually loses out and the ball is cleared.
Cox plays a ball over the top to Long, who dribbles to the edge of the box but the ball is blasted clear.
Baldvinsson takes a shot from 30 odd yards but it goes well over the bar.
Coleman is almost caught with a long ball over the top but recovers and puts it out for a corner. The corner, however, amounts to nothing and Westwood takes the goalkick.
The free kick is blasted straight at the Irish wall and out for a throw in.
McCarthy concedes a free kick at the edge of the Irish box as his elbow clashes Benjaminsen's face.
Ireland's Group C rivals Austria are also 1-0 up at half time against Kazakhstan.
Elsewhere, Germany are 3-0 up against Sweden. Goals coming from Mertesacker and Miroslav Klose (2).
Ireland are attempting to pass the ball around now as the game enters its final 15 minutes.

McGeady lays off Cox, but the shot is blocked before trickling to Andrews, whose shot is deflected wide for a corner.

Wilson wins the ball off Naes and puts the ball out for a throw in. Naes takes the throw, but it is headed clear by O'Dea.
Holst releases Edmundsson, whose cross causes havoc in the Irish box, but is eventually cleared by O'Shea.

Ireland flood men into the box as McGeady dribbles down the left hand side of the box. His cross misses everyone and goes out of play for a goal kick.
The Faroes launch a quick counter attack through Holst and Naes, but the danger fizzles out as Wilson intercepts.
McGeady plays a dangerous cross in to Walters, but the Stoke City striker climbs all over the defender and concedes a free kick.
Correction: Walters, not Keane, scores for Ireland after meeting a cross with a crisp header. Confusion arose when Keane sneakily attempted to claim the goal.

Keane takes a shot from outside the box with his weaker left foot. It sails well over and McGeady, who was free, is not happy.

After some tentative play outside the Faroe Islands box, Wilson strikes and it sails past Nielsen with the aid of a Naes deflection.

The second half is underway!
The second half is about to get underway. Simon Cox is on for Robbie Brady.
Ireland captain Robbie Keane appears to have aggravated his Achilles and Simon Cox is warming up with a view to coming on in the second half.
Statistically, it is a very even game. Each team has had five corners and two shots on target in the first half.
It is half-time in Torshavn and the score is 0-0 between Faroe Islands and Ireland. Lars Olsen's men will be happy with their passing play and they have given a good account of themselves, but they have looked susceptible to Irish crossing. Samuelsen and Holst have been particularly lively for the Islanders.

Some nice play from Ireland is wasted as Andrews plays the cross straight into Nielsen's hands. Keane is furious with the Bolton man.

Edmundsson is released by Holst into the Irish box and his shot is deflected for a corner. Ireland struggle to clear the corner and eventually win a free kick for a high foot.
Naes plays a dangerous cross into the box which is half cleared by Coleman. A period of sustained pressure outside the Irish box results in a corner for the Faroes.

Andrews attempts to chip a ball over the top to Keane but it is cut out and the Faroe Islands quickly counter, winning a free kick to the right of Ireland's goal.
McGeady gifts possession to the Faroes twice in quick succession, allowing Faroe Islands to launch a counter attack but it results in a free kick to Ireland.
Samuelsen sends a left-footed shot well over the Irish goal. Westwood can breathe a sigh of relief.
Lovely play from Ireland. Keane chips into Andrews, who deftly headers for Walters across the net but the 'keeper parries it goes out for a corner.
Wilson cannot control an innocuous ball and it goes out for a throw in, which is launced into the box and results in a Faroe Islands corner.
Ireland are looking dangerous from the wings, playing some nice crosses into the Faroe Islands box, but they cannot capitalise.
Wilson's floated cross to the back post finds Brady, but the Man United's winger's volley is deflected wide.
McGeady puts a great cross into the box to find Walters, whose header is too high and blazes over the bar.
Wilson's pass is much too fast for Walters and the ball trickles out for a goal kick.

With 15 minutes gone, Ireland are beginning to keep the ball, patiently probing for an opening before knocking the ball long and losing possession.
Holst releases Samuelsen but the winger's cross is too close to Westwood.

Wilson plays a looping ball into the Faroes box seeking out his Stoke City teammate Walters, who fails to control the ball and the danger is cleared.
The Faroe Islands pushing players forward with some neat interplay, but ultimately the attack is cut out by Wilson.
Coleman in an altercation with Edmundsson but the Donegal man diffuses the situation by professionally offering his hand.

Naes instigates a sweeping Faroes attack making a great tackle to nick the ball away from Wilson before sweeping forward. O'Dea cleared the initial danger.

The anthems have finished and the game is about to get underway. Faroe Islands line out with a 4-5-1 formation while Ireland have reverted to 4-4-2 after using 4-5-1 against Germany.

Giovanni Trapattoni's Boys in Green have a massive point to prove in this game after suffering a heavy 6-1 defeat at home to Germany last Friday night. Trapattoni, indeed, may even be in his last game in charge of the Irish team, with speculation mounting that his job is under severe threat. Interestingly, the Italian has cancelled tomorrow's post-match press conference in Dublin and is instead flying straight to Milan, Italy.
