The visitors picked up a morale-boosting victory that may not get the attention it deserves after the American shot stopper amazingly scored

A freak goal by goalkeeper Tim Howard gave Everton the lead but a comeback from Bolton Wanderers with goals from David Ngog and captain Gary Cahill gave the visitors three points to move them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was a quiet first half at Goodison Park with each side trying to press through the high winds on Merseyside. Chris Eagles had a weak early shot stopped by Howard five minutes in before Everton started to take control.

A great low cross from the returning Landon Donavon 12 minutes in was steered wide by Denis Stracqualursi, a chance which was followed by a cross from Leighton Baines that was headed down by Bolton defender Zat Knight but was put wide by Louis Saha.

The home side continued to press and on the half-hour mark Saha played through Osman, who put the ball just wide of the post.

The first change of the match came on 41 minutes when Phil Jagielka picked up a knock for Everton and was replaced by Jack Rodwell.

The main talking point of the first half came just before half time when Donovan was through on goal then challenged by Bolton defender Sam Ricketts in the box; referee Phil Dowd gave Everton a corner with home fans calling for a spot-kick.

In first-half injury time Bolton hit Everton on the break with Ngog being played through for a great goalscoring opportunity but was denied by a great spread from Howard.

The second half saw Bolton come out stronger, with Petrov putting in Mark Davies, whose strike was met by a great save from the American.

Bolton kept on the pressure as Ngog was given space to curl one at goal, only for the forward to be denied by a more simple Howard stop.

Everton then used there third substitution on 60 minutes as Rodwell made it the third injury for the Toffees as he went off replaced by Tim Cahill.

The deadlock was finally broken on the 63rd minute with a freak goal from Everton keeper Howard. The keeper struck the ball away from his box, only to see his clearance bounce up erratically and get carried by the extreme winds at Goodison Park. The movement of the ball caught out away keeper Adam Bogdan and it amazingly bounced into the net.

But Bolton responded immediately as Ngog’s quick feet got him past the Everton defence before he slotted past Howard.

On 75 minutes, Distin gave away a free-kick just outside the box, which was whipped in onto the head of Bolton captain Cahill. Howard punched away the effort but the ball was fed back to the defender, who calmly slotted home to give Bolton the lead.

A late push by Everton saw a Leighton Baines free-kick hit the bar on 90 minutes but it wasn’t enough as Bolton took the three points in a game that will be remembered for the home goalkeeper's goal.
