Live Commentary

  • Well, what a dramatic end. That's it from me, Mohammed Ali this evening. I'll be back tomorrow for LIVE coverage of Marseille v Inter. Stick with Goal.com for Champions League LIVE with a mouthwatering clash between Napoli and Chelsea to come this evening and all of the reaction from Moscow. Pleasure as always, good night!
  • Our man Andy McLean with a final update from the Luzhniki: Wow! What an eruption of noise! In many ways it was an undeserved equaliser for CSKA but Wernbloom's goal gives the second-leg an added twist. Slutsky made some good changes introducing Oliseh in the second-half, as he showed more controlled energy on the wing and chances started to come. It was a similar situation that Slutsky took back to Sevilla in this round of the competition in 2010 and the Russians reigned in Spain. It will be a bigger task than that in Madrid, but an even bigger party in Moscow this evening
  • Jose Mourinho's men have also failed to match Barcelona's seven straight Champions League victories.
  • CSKA Moscow were threatening for the last ten minutes, but even they couldn't envisage their luck at a dramatic equaliser deep into injury time. They maintain their record of not losing against Spanish opposition whilst also becoming the first team to score against Real Madrid at home.
  • What a result. Real Madrid looked to have been content with a 1-0 lead going back to the Bernabeu in three week's time, but a real kick in the teeth for Mourinho with Wernbloom's 93rd minute equaliser. The visitors were rather profligate in their finishing with Ronaldo having numerous chances to put the match out of sight. All to play for when the Russians travel to the Spanish capital.
  • FULL-TIME! CSKA MOSCOW 1-1 REAL MADRID

    Goal Pontus Wernbloom
GOAAALLLL!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!!! CSKA MOSCOW HAVE EQUALISED!! In the dying seconds, a free-kick drifts in towards the far post. Headed back in, Wernbloom fires in past Casillas to seal a shock draw! DRAMATIC

Slutski voices his disapproval towards the referee. One last chance for CSKA Moscow as Coentrao handballs.
  • 90' + 1'
Oliseh delivers in a threatening cross, and whilst Casillas looked hesistant in coming out for the ball, Pepe calmly heads away. He's been rock-solid this evening.
  • 90'
Three minutes of injury time added to the end of the match. Can CSKA grab a shock equaliser?
  • 88'
The hosts are creating half-chances in and around the Madrid penalty box late on, but cannot negotiate a way past a resolute defence. A frustrated Slutski looks on.
  • 87'
Sergio Ramos hoofs the ball up unchallenged from inside his own half. No need for me tell you where that ended up.

  • 85'
    Substitution Mesut Özil Raúl Albiol
  • 84'
RONALDO!! The goalscorer tonight really should've had a hat-trick, and an agonising miss denies him at least a second goal. Lovely movement from Madrid and CR7 flashes his effort inches wide.
  • 83'
Casillas has had precious little to do this evening, but had to be alert to stave off a dangerous free-kick from Honda.
  • 83'
Our man in Moscow Andy McLean provides us with another update: Chepchugov hasn't been known for convincing performances when it counts but he has kept his team in the game with his positioning and timing twice in two minutes.
  • 82'
    Substitution Zoran Tosic Tomas Necid
  • 82'
    Yellow Card Fabio Coentrao
  • 82'
Tomas Necid replaces Zoran Tosic. Eight minutes plus stoppage time left in Moscow.
  • 81'
The late surge for the hosts continues as Oliseh bombs down the flank looking for a cross. Coentrao cuts across him witth a rash challenge, and ends up with a yellow card.
  • 79'
CSKA Moscow appear to be going for it as more players move up the field. Pepe cancels out a ball into the area, and the second delivery trickles into Casillas' arms.
  • 77'
The hosts look to make progress late on, but a poor ball finds Sekou Oliseh offside. Frustrating for the Army Men.

  • 74'
A nervy moment from the hosts as Higuain chases down a loose ball on the left wing. Ronaldo crosses in towards Callejon, who is thwarted by Schennikov. Corner to Real Madrid.
  • 73'
BobbyKayz on Twitter: The CSKA coach got his tactics wrong there by replacing Ahmed Musa with Oliseh. He is the player of the night so far..
  • 72'
    Yellow Card Sergio Ramos
  • 72'
Sergio Ramos is the third man in the book this evening, after referee Kuipers issues the right-back with a yellow card.
  • 71'
Doumbia does fantastically well to skill past his marker and deliver a cross from the right wing. It finds Dzagoev who audaciously attempts an overhead kick. Dzagoev misses the ball, but catches Jose Callejon.
  • 70'
The hosts are awarded a free-kick in a good position as Dzagoev is felled by Xabi Alonso. Honda takes, but that is an easy save by Casillas.
  • 68'
    Substitution Evgeni Aldonin Keisuke Honda
  • 68'
A roar from the fans emanates around the Luzhniki as Keisuke Honda makes his long awaited return to the field. The Japanese midfielder replaces Evgeniy Aldonin.
  • 68'
Fouling is becoming more and more prevalent as Oliseh lunges into Fabio Coentrao after the Portuguese international had played the ball.
  • 67'
    Yellow Card Pontus Wernbloom
  • 67'
Wernbloom concedes a free-kick for a tackle on Ozil. Referee Kuipers finally hands the Sweden international a yellow card, which is met with a wry smile.
  • 65'
Aldonin creates an opening for the Army Men, but his ball in towards Doumbia is poor.
  • 64'
Substitution Ahmed Firaz Moosa Sekou Jabateh Oliseh
  • 64'
A surprising substiution from CSKA Moscow. Sekou Oliseh replaces Ahmed Musa with 26 minutes left on the clock. It could be linked to that earlier missed chance. Interesting.
  • 63'
The hosts do well to storm up the field, with Musa racing into space before shooting a low effort straight at Iker Casillas. The Nigerian winger had other options too.
  • 62'
Our man Andy McLean in Moscow: Real are again taking the sting out of the Russians' tail. Constant boos, whistling and unhappy chants are dropping the temperature further here in the south-west of Moscow. Only a small group of fans are keeping their chins up, as Honda and Necid begin to move around the sideline. Time for a change.
  • 61'
Doumbia's mazy run earns his side a corner. Dzagoev whips in the ball, as Berezutski heads back into the danger area. However, the referee penalises the defender for a foul on Sergio Ramos.
  • 60'
Real Madrid are awarded a corner after Ignashevich's block. Ozil delivers the ball in, but the visitors' progress is hindered as Coentrao fouls Musa.
  • 58'
CSKA's attacking play mirrors that of the first half. After a bright start, their threats are being easily dealt with by Mourinho's men.
  • 55'
Wernbloom is at it again as he commits a foul on Arbeloa. The free-kick delivered into the box is again poorly dealt with as Ronaldo skies his finish. The nine-time winners are knocking on the door.
  • 53'
Shashwattrff on Twitter: Well both teams have created chances, so we .could see more goals..3-1 to Real Madrid.
  • 53'
RONALDO!! Almost a second for the visitors who open up the defence as they impose their authority on this match. The ball finds CR7 by himself in the box, but it is slightly overhit. Ronaldo does well to lay it off to CALLEJON who skips past his marker but cannot force it over Chepchugov who saves well!
  • 51'
CALLEJON! Poor finish from the striker. Callejon attempts to get past Ignashevich which he does, but fires disappointingly wide.
  • 51'
Ayodejivictor on Twitter: What a great game, the way Ahmed Musa is playing tonight I think is calling for a top team to bid for him.

Doumbia is fouled by Pepe as the referee awards a fre-kick to Slutski's men.

We have our first yellow card of the night. Xabi Alonso is booked for a lunge on Ahmed Musa.
  • 46'
Real Madrid get us underway for the second period. Jose Mourinho met with a chorus of boos after his re-emergence from the tunnel.
  • The players are back onto the field at Luzhniki. The second half begins in earnest.......
  • Anderson on Twitter: Though the game will be a difficult one due to the extreme weather, but Ronaldo is goin to score 3 goals - whilst Maazfltekh on Twitter thinks the reason Coentrao is playing is because he is more capable defensively. Thank you for your messages!
  • SohaibArshadButt on Twitter: Real will win 3-0 and Ronaldo will score a hat-trick!
  • Kerisma9 on Twitter: The match is going to end 3-1 in favour of Los Blancos...HALA MADRID - a prediction that may not be too far off!
  • Our man Andy McLean in Moscow back with more updates: CSKA captain Sergei Ignashevich may well have saved his side going in at half-time two down with a professional foul on Ronaldo. Madrid caught the Muscovites with the kind of counter Slutsky will have envisaged his side deploying against the Spanish league leaders but they have really struggled after the adrenaline rush of the opening exchanges. Communication has frozen for CSKA and Doumbia might do the same unless the wingers can get up to support the Ivory Coast forward. There have been too many aimless and rather hopeful passes and flicks. Real Madrid will be delighted to be ahead at the break and have left the fans rather quiet. The job is half-complete for Mourinho and his men but CSKA will feel they rather gifted Ronaldo the goal.
  • CSKA Moscow's record of never losing against Spanish opposition in Europe looks under threat. The second half is moments away.
  • EmmanuelFema on Twitter: "They should have started with Marcelo because of his pace and strength and also his combination with Ronado is awesome." - thank you for your message. Keep them coming to @mohammedali_93
  • The visitors have broken the deadlock in icy conditions in Moscow. Cristiano Ronaldo's 36th goal of the season has given Jose Mourinho's men the half-time lead, and they look good value for it too. The Army Men had initially threatened through Ahmed Musa in the early stages, but have significantly tailed off towards the end of the first half.
  • Half-time in Moscow: CSKA Moscow 0-1 Real Madrid.
  • 45' + 2'
Aldonin searches for a pass in midfield, but the Russian opts to go it alone, as he fires a powerful effort which sails over the bar.
  • 45' + 1'
Two minutes of injury time at the end of the first half at Luzhniki.
  • 45'
Dzagoev slips in a ball towards Musa on the right wing. The youngster's low cross into the box is saved well by Casillas.
  • 44'
Ahmed Musa runs down a loose ball after a defensive lapse. The 19 year old appears to be winning that battle with Iker Casillas, but the Real Madrid captain hurriedly clears.
  • 43'
Wernbloom certainly looks like getting stuck in at any opportunity. The debutant jumps for an aerial challenge with Ronaldo. Meanwhile, the hosts are given a free-kick after Tosic is fouled by Callejon.
  • 41'
The visitors are awarded a corner, as Ozil delivers. Headed away by Berezutski with Sergio Ramos adjudged to be offside as the ball is drilled back into the box.
  • 40'
Seydou Doumbia gets in behind the defence, but the attacker's finish is nowhere near to troubling Iker Casillas. Edging towards the end of the first period in Moscow.
  • 38'
Ignashevich fouls Cristiano Ronaldo just outside the area with the referee awarding a free-kick. Ronaldo steps up, but the resulting set-piece is fired into the wall.
  • 36'
Since going behind, the hosts have issued a good response, but fail to negotiate the visitors' backline. Doumbia chases, with Iker Casillas racing out of goal, but the back-tracking Pepe nervously clears.
  • 35'
Our man Andy McLean in Moscow provides another update: Slutsky probably would have saved that one! Tosic, who was selected for his tracking back over Oliseh, is the man to gift Ronaldo the opening goal. CSKA fans are straight back into full voice but frustrations can be heard around the ground at conceding another terribly sloppy Champions League goal. Can the Army Men rally?
  • 33'
The CSKA support inside the Luzhniki have been noticeably silenced! A penalty appeal from Dzagoev is switfly rejected by referee Kuipers.
  • 31'
Ronaldo looks to wreak havoc again, as the Portuguese international breaks free on the right wing but he stumbles as the ball evades him. Leonid Slutski's men are beginning to crack.
  • 28'
    Goal Cristiano Ronaldo
GOAAAALLLL!!! REAL MADRID ARE AHEAD!!!! Poor defending from the hosts, but it is that man Ronaldo who nudges Los Blancos into a lead with that precious away goal. A cross from the left is headed into Ronaldo's path by Tosic who fires into the corner past Chepchugov! 1-0 Madrid!
  • 28'
Real Madrid are threatening, but Chepchugov plucks Ronaldo's cross out from the air.
  • 26'
Ozil wins back the ball deep in midfield, but loses it again as the hosts look to capitalise on the error. Musa races to chase the ball, but an early cross sees the ball rocket over Casillas' goal and high into the stands. Very poor.
  • 25'
Corner to Real Madrid. Ozil's delivery is poor, and the hosts move quickly to nullify the threat.
  • 24'
Our man Andy McLean in Moscow with another update: An unlikely hero in Chepchugov as he makes a double stop. Home fans were furious with a trip on Aldonin in the build-up to the chance. Madrid appear to be rotating frontmen dropping out wide-right while keeping Ronaldo tight in between the Berezutski brothers when los Blancos don't have the ball. Gradually the visitors are beginning to dominate this match.
  • 23'
Higuain strays into an offside position, earlier, the Argentine international was penalised for a foul on Ignashevich.-
  • 20'
Wernbloom goes in hard on Higuain, with the referee awarding the visitors a free-kick.
  • 18'
SUPERB SAVE CHEPCHUGOV!!!! Wonderful double save from the CSKA goalkeeper who performs heroics. Higuain looks to have scored after his low shot is saved after a fine attacking move from the visitors with what could've been a goal with his first touch. Khedira gets an effort away on the rebound, but Chepchugov blocks it for a corner.
  • 16'
    Substitution Karim Benzema Gonzalo Higuaín
  • 16'
Karim Benzema is substituted, which must be a huge early blow to Real Madrid as Gonzalo Higuain comes on as his replacement.
  • 15'
Yes, it appears that Benzema can no longer continue as Mourinho looks on concerned. Higuain warming up on the touchline.
  • 13'
Karim Benzema attempts to get a shot away from distance, but his effort is well wide. The France international has suffered a strain after falling onto the artificial surface.
  • 12'
Jose Callejon runs marginally offside, but immediately CSKA storm upwards towards the other end as Ahmed Musa attempts to get a cross in. The winger is having an impressive opening 10 minutes or so as . Madrid look slightly sluggish
  • 10'
Aldonin and Doumbia intertwine in midfield, and the latter tries to switch flanks, but it is intercepted by Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho meanwhile, takes notes on the bench.
  • 8'
It's the hosts who certainly look much fresher - they haven't played competitively for two months! They bombs down the right flank and Musa, who is waiting for the ball in the box fouls Pepe.
  • 7'
DZAGOEV!! First chance of any sort in Moscow, and it's gone to Slutski's men. Schennikov evades his marker by drifting in a cross, and Dzagoev, the highly rated youngster acrobatically gets his shot away, which flew wide.
  • 6'
A physical opening to proceedings in Moscow continues as Fabio Coentrao concedes a freekick on 19 year old Musa, also on for his debut. The Army Men are looking resolute thus far.
  • 5'
Wernbloom, making his debut for the hosts this evening went in with a rash tackle on Ronaldo. Dzagoev races through the midfield, but his threaded ball in towards Doumbia is cut out.
  • 4'
Tosic penalised for a foul on Arbeloa. Madrid however, are warming to the artificial pitch despite it being difficult to control the ball. Ronaldo is fouled next as the visitors are awarded a free-kick.
  • 3'
After a slow start, Madrid lose the ball with Aldonin chasing down the flank before it is cleared by Arbeloa. Ozil fouled near the touchline, much to the disgust of Mourinho.
  • 1'
And WE ARE OFF! CSKA Moscow get us underway, attacking from right to left in their blue/red home kit, Real Madrid in white.
  • Inca187 on Twitter: "Kaka is good on the bench he was just too cold earlier for my liking!" - keep the messages coming to @mohammedali_93 on Twitter.
  • The Champions League anthem is blaring, and the atmosphere almost feverish. Not long to go now - almost 21:00 Moscow time.
  • Our man Andy McLean in Moscow: A fortunate Real Madrid side will shortly walk out in to a mild February evening in Moscow, just -5. Earlier Zidane trotted off the Real Madrid coach to a huge cheer but was quick to put his coat on and run inside. It has been rumoured that Real Madrid brought over 25kg of winter clothing per player. However, it was -25 just two weeks ago. The stadium is filling up and the atmosphere building as the CSKA ultras fill their lungs with cold air.
  • The teams are out on a chilly artificial pitch. Atmosphere building in Moscow with the stadium almost full for once. Tonight's referee is Bjorn Kuipers from the Netherlands.
  • So, Real Madrid & CSKA fans - what do YOU make of the team lineups? Can Slutski's men gain a shock win tonight, or will Madrid live upto their tag as favourites? Send me your views and follow me on Twitter @mohammedali_93 - and I'll post those messages up.
  • Our man in Moscow is Andy McLean, and he has given the reaction to the starting line-ups from inside the stadium: The Russians appear to be happy that Argentine forward Higuain has been left out the starting line-up by Mourinho. The media in Moscow were highlighting his intelligent runs between channels at the back as the biggest cause for concern during this home leg. Jose Mourinho used similar tactics to move Sneijder and Milito between CSKA lines in an effective Champions League victory here just two seasons ago. CSKA fans know exactly what they are up against this evening. Arkady and Roman are unsure of their team's chances going into tonight's fixture, both of them predicting Ronaldo to get the better of CSKA to win 3-1.
  • TEAM NEWS: Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has recalled Sami Khedira, Alvaro Arbeloa and Jose Callejon for his side's tough trip to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday, but there is no room in the starting XI for Kaka in the Russian capital. CSKA are without goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev (torn knee ligaments), Mark Gonzalez (hip) and playmaker Keisuke Honda (knee) resumed training but sits out the tie while Pavel Mamaev and Kirill Nababkin serve one-match suspensions. New signings Pontus Wernbloom and Ahmed Musa make their CSKA debuts.
  • Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Casillas; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrao; Xabi Alonso, Khedira; Callejon, Ozil, Ronaldo; Benzema. SUBS Adán, Carvalho, Marcelo, Varane, Granero, Kaka, Higuaín.
  • CONFIRMED TEAM LINE-UPS: CSKA Moscow (4-2-3-1): Chepchugov; A. Berezutskiy, V. Berezutskiy, Ignashevitch, Schennikov; Aldonin, Wernbloom; Tosic, Dzagoev, Musa; Doumbia. SUBS: Revyakin, Šemberas, Honda, Rahimić, Oliseh, Kim In-Sung, Necid.
  • Meanwhile, Mourinho has also expressed some concern at the conditions. We will have to be stronger than the conditions, which are difficult and different," the Madrid boss told reporters at a press conference. Synthetic [pitch] is not the same as natural [pitch]. Minus 10 degrees is not the same as 10 degrees. We must be at the top of our game to overcome these factors."
  • Both sides have been vocal ahead of the showdown. Sergey Ignashevich has fired a warning shot at the La Liga leaders, arguing that the cold weather could work in the hosts favour. The defender stated "When you step out in the freezing cold, your mind gets foggy and you can't concentrate on anything, like you are falling asleep". Will be interesting at how the visitors cope in what will be -7°C in the Russian capital.
  • Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid head into this clash in flawless form. Los Blancos easily dispatched Racing Santander 4-0 at the weekend to remain a cool ten points ahead of Barcelona, whilst also failing to win just two games in all competitions since December (the Copa del Rey tie against Pep Guardiola's men). Real Madrid also coasted through Group F winning six out of six, with a 3-0 victory over Ajax on matchday six condemning Frank de Boer's men into the Europa League.
  • Now for the action. CSKA Moscow sneaked into the last 16 thanks to a dramatic shock 2-1 win over 2010 winners Inter at San Siro on matchday six. That encounter on December 6, also happens to be the last time the Army Men have played a competitive game due to the recess of the Russian league season which is due to restart in two weeks. Leonid Slutski's men have played in six friendlies, the most recent a 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk last week.

  • Good afternoon, (or evening) and welcome to the return of the Champions League on Goal.com and to our LIVE commentary from a chilly Luzhniki Stadium as CSKA Moscow take on Spanish giants Real Madrid in the last 16 first leg. Team news to follow shortly.
