Whilst not affecting their chances for qualification from this group, victory for Scotland could prove crucial in the UEFA coefficient rankings when it comes to seeding for the European Championship 2016.
Scotland certainly showed they were no pushovers after the hosts suggested they would score plenty of goals in this match.
A goal from Snodgrass midway through the first-half proved to be the winning goal as Strachan earns his first big scalp as Scotland manager.

Croatian supporters are heading for the exit doors. This wasn't what they had in mind.
We have three minutes of added time here at Zagreb.
There's just one minute left on the clock now and a thump down the pitch from Pletikosa heads over everybody and into the arms of McGregor in goal for Scotland. That has summed up their evening today.
A final substitution for Croatia as Mandzukic trots off the pitch to be replaced by Kranjcar.
Another ball into the Scotland box comes in but they defend it well and see it go out for a goal kick.
Sammir makes a promising run forward and picks out Eduardo but the Scottish defence clear their lines.
Chance for Scotland! The ball falls to Naismith after a cross into the box but he spends far too long on the ball and is picked off.
There's just ten minutes remaining and Croatia haven't got any closer to scoring, leading to chants from the Tartan army.

McArthur is on the recieving end of a yellow card for Scotland this time - their second of the game.

Rakitic picks up a yellow card for a late challenge right on top of the referee.
Cardiff City winger Craig Conway is introduced in place of Maloney to make his fourth appearance for his country.
Maloney is signalling for a substitution after falling to the ground.
Scotland haven't had anywhere near as much of the ball in this second period but have just over 18 minues of normal time to hold onto their lead.
Croatia make their second substitution with Strnini coming off for another striker, this time Kalinic.
Kovacic has a shot on goal saved by McGregor but the linesman flags for offside.
An early chance for Rhodes off the bench as a ball from a free-kick is aimed towards his head, but he can't get enough of his body under the ball.
Rhodes also makes his way onto the pitch in place of Griffiths.
First substitution for Scotland as Naismith comes on for Bannan.
Another chance for Mandzukic but this time the opportunity is not quite as clear cut. Rakitic delivered the ball into the box and he tried a spectacular overhead kick but his attempt sails over.
Chance for Croatia! Mandzukic appears late into the box after a left-hand side cross is delivered low but he can't get enough of a touch on the ball.
Croatia are having a lot of the ball in the second-half and are looking brighter.
Hutton advances forward from the right-back position and delivers a ball into the box. It finds its way to Bannan towards the edge of the area and he volleys wide.
Perisic comes off to be replaced by Eduardo. It's a sensible move as they need to create more chances.
Olic recieves a pass on the edge of the box but his shot goes over the bar.
Rakitic takes a corner to the right of the keeper but his delivery swings out of play.
Sammir floats a cross into the box from the edge of the penalty area but Mandzukic can't get enough of a touch on the ball.
Rakitic has the first attempt on goal in this half but his strike from far out sails over the bar.
The referee blows his whistle and Croatia start us off again.
The players are back on the pitch as we look to get underway with the second period!
Snodgrass was presented with a fortunate opportunity on goal on 26 minutes but finished well. Croatia on the other hand sqaundered a glorious chance through Sammir just ten minutes later but couldn't keep his half-volley down. They are really missing the creativity of Modrid in the middle of the park and will perhaps feel they need to change their style in the second-half if they are to claim an important victory.
Scotland will be pleased with their first-half showing as whilst they haven't created an awful lot in the final third, they have contained Croatia well after an early flurry of enthusiasm.
Belgium, Croatia's rivals for first-place, will be pleased with the performance of the home side at the moment - or rather lack of. They are leading Serbia by one goal to nil in their fixture which piles even more pressure on Croatia if they wish to finish top of the group.

The referee signals the end of the first period and it is Scotland who hold a 1-0 lead at the Stadion Maksimir.

Croatia have a chance dramatically cleared inside the Scotland box as a dangerous ball in causes havoc.
We have five added minutes which is no surprise given the treatment recieved from Pletikosa.
Fantastic play from Olic! The ball arrives to him on the edge of the box with his back faced to the goal but he turns Hutton beautifully only to see his shot rifled over from close range.
Maloney takes after the referee orders the Croatia wall to move back, but his delivery is also overhit.
Snodgrass wins another free-kick in a dangerous position for Scotland.
Another ball into the box comes in from Croatia but the delivery is too close to the Scotland keeper. They have failed with all their crosses so far.
Scotland are frustrating the home crowd here and are keeping the ball quite comfortably thus far.
Another chance for Croatia! A deep ball into the box from Snra finds Rakitic from inside the six-yard box but he heads wide of the post as he stretches.
What a chance for Croatia! Sammir has an empty goal to aim for after a poor ball to McGregor in goal forces him to clear hastily, but he doesn't keep his shot down.
Strninic concedes another free-kick against Alan Hutton this time in a dangerous position near the corner flag, but the resulting ball into the box is aimed straight as the keeper in goal.
Croatia are giving a number of needless fouls away and have just done so again. It's their fifth foul of the game.
Play resumes after Pletikosa recieved treatment from the Croatia physios.
Shaun Maloney ran towards goal and a tackle from a Croatian defender placed the ball in the path of the Norwich player to stab the ball into the net. Pletikosa appears to be in some discomfort after Snodgrass collided with him in the process.

Another corner for Croatia but the referee intervenes for a foul against Scotland inside the box.
Perisic plays a wonderful ball across the pitch towards Srna in an advanced position but he can't get his cross in. Scotland are blocking a lot here.
Perisic takes a long-range drive at goal from some distance but his shot blazes over the goal.
The play has turned back in Croatia's favour but Scotland have kept a disciplined back-line so far.
Croatia whip a cross into the box towards the head of Mandzukic but he is challenged in the air and the danger goes.
The first corner of the game goes to Croatia but the delivery into the box is easily cleared.
Scotland looked to make a decent counter attacking move on the right-hand side but Hutton wastefully overhits his pass to Snodgrass.
The home crowd are making themselves known as they jeer Scotland's possession of the ball.
The visitors have started well here and are picking up more of the ball after a bright start from Croatia.
Bannan takes the free-kick short to James Morrison but the captain for the day blasts his shot over by some distance.
Leigh Griffiths earns a free-kick in a decent position half-way in Croatia's half with Barry Bannan set to take it.
Alan Hutton ventures forward for Scotland on the right-hand side but has his shot on the edge of the box blocked.
Scotland earn the first foul of the game in their own half.
Scotland aren't showing any nerves here and are looking comfortable both with the ball and without it.
Croatia have started quick out of the blocks and are closing down at every opportunity.
