Chelsea - Wigan Athletic Preview: Hosts look to make it five wins in seven against the Latics

The Blues are bidding to keep the pressure on Spurs and Arsenal in the top four, while the Latics are seeking three Premier League wins on the bounce for the first time since 2005

Skipper John Terry has insisted his willingness to play through the pain of a cracked rib but Roberto Di Matteo may choose to rest him for the game against the Latics.

John Obi Mikel is expected to complete a midfield trio alongside Frank Lampard and Ramires after a string of impressive performances in recent weeks from the Nigerian.

The Latics recall Mohamed Diame for the first time in three matches, as the combative midfielder has recovered from a groin problem.

Victor Moses may be given license to roam after his strike against Stoke City last week, with former Blues striker Franco Di Santo expected to lead the line in the absence of the injured Hugo Rodallega.

  • Chelsea have won five of the last seven meetings between the sides.
  • Frank Lampard (pictured right) needs one goal to reach 150 Premier League strikes (West Ham 24, Chelsea 125).
  • Wigan have lost just one of their last eight matches - a 2-0 defeat to Swansea City.
  • The Latics are chasing three consecutive wins for the first time since November 2005.
  • Striker Franco Di Santo is likely to feature against his old club, although he has only managed four goals this season.
  • The two sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture back in December, when Jordi Gomez struck two minutes from time to cancel out Daniel Sturridge's opener.

The forward was one of the few shining lights during Andre Villas-Boas' reign and has been one of few at Chelsea to trouble the net regularly this campaign.

His form has tailed off slightly under Roberto Di Matteo's rotation policy but he has showcased his enormous talent on many occassions this seaosn and will be looking to plunder more goals against a leaky Latics back line.

V. Moses

The Latics' top scorer has been in terrific form of late, with his goal against Stoke last weekend taking his tally to six for the season.

The Crystal palace academy graduate has the pace and power to trouble the Blues' defence which hasn't looked solid for much of this season, and if he can add consistency to his play, he could be the man to fire Wigan to safety.

Editor's Prediction

Wigan have been in great form of late, with back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Stoke giving them renewed hope of survival this season despite a fearsome fixture run-in. However, they face a Chelsea side who likewise have lost just once in eight matches and will be full of confidence after booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

History is against the Latics in this one, and even with the hosts' defensive concerns, it's hard to imagine the visitors grabbing a surprise result. This is often a high-scoring affair and I expect the same here on Saturday, though the Blues should ultimately come out on top.
