• Stamford Bridge, London
Referee: M. Atkinson
• Attendance: 40931
F. Malouda 32'
D. Drogba 77'
Shots on Target
90' + 3'
Peep peep peeeep! The referee has blown the whistle for full time! 2 0 to Chelsea as they maintain their perfect start to the season. While 3 defeats out of 3 for Stoke keeps them in the bottom 3.
90' + 1'
Kalou misses a sitter! A long ball straight to him, and controlled well, skips past the defender, and only the keeper to beat. Shoots straight at him! Should've been 3 0
3 minutes of stoppage time, says the referee.
Kalou skips past Whelan, and releases Sturridge on the right. Sturridge, with a narrow angle to aim at, shoots it wide.
Essien goes off, and Ramires, the 17m man from Benfica comes onto replace him.
Chelsea are, predictably, passing it around and playing for time. Can Stoke stick one in to trigger an exciting finish?
Sturridge comes on for Anelka.
Kalou earns a corner for Chelsea. Malouda takes it, but cleared away. It again comes back to Malouda who slaloms past a couple of defenders, and chips it to Cole, whose shot goes nowhere.
Penalty Goal Didier Drogba
Assist Nicolas Anelka
GOAL FOR CHELSEA! Drogba takes the penalty. Hits it to the left corner, keeper dives right. 2 0 Chelsea, and that should be it.
Penalty for Chelsea! Sorensen meanders towards a ball Anelka was always going to get first to, and then clatters into him clumsily. Too obvious a call for the referee.
Groans, frustration and what not as Chelsea struggle to make any serious inroads into the Stoke defense.
Kalou on for Lampard, who wasn't at his best today. And missed a penalty to boot.
Malouda picks it up close to the center of the pitch, keeps running past 1, then another, and another, but eventually shoots meekly to yield a goal kick for Stoke.
Off the bar! Whelan steals the ball, slaloms in easily towards the edge of the area, wallops it straight into the cross bar. Cech had no chance. So close for Stoke!
Essien launches a counter attack with a typical burst, and then releases Drogba on the left flank. Drogba chips it in but is cleared away by Shawcross.
Delap with another throw in from the right flank. Again a poor clear clearance means Whelan gets hold of it, but is unable to clear the wall of Chelsea defenders. It deflects off one of them, and Cech shepherds the ball towards a corner. Nothing comes out of it for Stoke.
Lampard seeks out Anelka on the right corner with a lovely long pass. Anelka dribbles around the defender, but eventually the ball is cleared away for a throw
Stoke slowly attempt to express their presence in the game, for the first time in this half. How long can they sustain it?
Another Rory Delap throw into the box, this time from the left. A poor clearance falls straight into the path of Etherington. He wallops it, but with a wall of Chelsea players waiting behind, Drogba clears it away.
Oh Drogba! What a miss! Anelka, on the left flank, chips it delightfully straight to Drogba's head, who just heads it straight at Sorensen. What a miss!
3 minutes into the second half, and the game has resumed its familiar pattern. Chelsea on top.
Whitehead and Jones get the second half underway.
45' + 2'
Half time. Chelsea 1 0 Stoke. Deserved you would say, as Chelsea capitalized on their period of sustained dominance to go ahead through Malouda.
Essien, through to Ashley Cole, who crosses it in. But Drogba is well prevented from reaching the ball. Anelka picks it up from the right wing, crosses in to Lampard. He hits it off the half volley, but goes well over the bar.
Yellow Card Matthew Etherington
Lunging tackle from Terry on Jones. Luckily, he escapes a yellow. The free kick loops straight into the box, but is cleared away comfortably.
Sorensen to the rescue! Great run by Anelka, who was released by Mikel. But Sorensen steps in quickly and smothers the ball.
Yellow Card Dean Whitehead
Yellow card for Whitehead for a reckless challenge on Cole.
Drogba is off the field for some medical treatment, while on the pitch, Stoke are getting the Chelsea treatment. It's all Chelsea now.
OFF THE BAR! Stunning move by Chelsea! Drogba, hugging the left wing touch line, chips in beautifully to a Cole on the run, who volleys it straight into the top bar.
Goal Florent Malouda
Assist John Terry
GOAL FOR CHELSEA! Brilliant stuff! John Terry with a lovely through ball to an advancing Malouda in the center of the area. He easily evades the defenders and wallops it in. 1 0 Chelsea.
Chelsea, slowly but surely, building some serious attacking momentum. The waves of attack are slowly picking up with a lot of moves ending up in a corner, or being cleared away close to the goal.
A nice gradual build up by Chelsea. Lampard to Malouda on the wing, pass back, hits it to Terry, slipped down to Malouda. A nice cross in, but headed away for a corner. Corner turns out to be fruitless.
Drogba with a free kick about 5 yards from the D. Into the wall, headed away for a throw.
The game still hasn't picked up pace and momentum yet. Except for the odd moment like Lampard's missed penalty, the rare close call, its been just pass-pass-pass-cleared away.
Credit to Stoke as the game, atleast as yet, has been far from one sided as some might have expected. They have had a fairly equal number of chances, though haven't come as close as Chelsea did with a penalty.
Rory Delap with another of his trademark throws right into the box, almost like a corner. But, Jones it heads it well wide. Could've and should've done better.
Can Stoke get energised by that save? They were doing very well for a visiting team at Stamford Bridge untl then, with Walters, 10 yards away from goal, hit it just over the bar.
Missed Penalty Frank Lampard
Penalty save Thomas Sørensen
AND SAVED! Lampard hits it to the left of the keeper, but saved comfortably by Sorensen.
PENALTY for Chelsea! Clumsy challenge by Shawcross on Malouda, who was put through by Lampard.
Great work by Stoke! Nice one two between Etherington, Jones and back to Etherington. He sneaks away from the Chelsea rearguard, but shoots straight at Cech.
Chelsea fans are already getting impatient about not having seen a goal yet.
Oooooh! Just wide by Ashley Cole! In a trademark move by Chelsea, Cole's cut in to the box from the left flank is spotted well by Essien, who slips an inch perfect pass. From an awkward angle, though not much of a Stoke defense ahead, Cole hits it just wide off the post.
Lampard and Drogba get things underway for Chelsea.
6 0. 6 0. No, I am not reading out a result from a recent ATP tour game. They are Chelsea's results in their first 2 games. And now they play against Stoke. At home. Does anyone hold out much hope for Stoke today? Me neither. But, stranger things have happened on a football field.
And here is Stoke's: Sorensen; Huth, Shawcross, Faye, Collins; Delap, Whitehead, Wilkinson, Etherington; Jones, Walters. Subs: Begovic, Higginbotham, Whelan, Fuller, Pugh, Sanli, Tonge. The referee for today's game is going to be Martin Atkinson.
Here is Chelsea's line up: Cech; Paulo Ferreira, Alex, Terry, Cole; Essien, Mikel, Lampard; Anelka, Drogba, Malouda. Subs: Turnbull, Ramires, Benayoun, Zhirkov, Kalou, Sturridge, Van Aanholt.
