The hosts failed to win their next four games the last time they lost to Manchester United, but Fernando Torres will be out to make up for his astonishing miss at Old Trafford

FULHAM

It’s likely that Andres Villas-Boas will afford Fernando Torres the opportunity to start and get straight back on the goalscoring wagon after the Spaniard’s remarkable miss against Manchester United at the weekend. Elsewhere, Oriel Romeu and Romelu Lukaku could be given starts, with Jon Obi Mikel and David Luiz also in line to figure.

Martin Jol may give new signing Bryan Ruiz another chance to prove himself after a lacklustre start to life in west London. Otherwise, it seems likely that the visitors will stay as faithful as possible to the team that drew at the weekend with Manchester City in the hope of giving as good a showing as possible of themselves in the League Cup derby fixture.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • No Chelsea player other than Juan Mata has scored more than one goal this season.
  • The last time Chelsea lost to Manchester United, they went on a four-match winless streak.
  • Frank Lampard (right) has created more goalscoring chances than anybody else in the Premier League this season, with 14.
  • Fulham have not recorded a win in six outings, drawing their last three.
  • The last time the two met, in the Premier League back in February, the game finished a 0-0 stalemate as Clint Dempsey missed a penalty.
  • Fulham have been particularly vulnerable in the 10 minutes leading up to half-time, with over half of their goals conceded this term being during that window.

The onus will be on the under-fire striker to put his astonishing open goal miss behind him as quickly as possible. It was a moment that totally took the glean off of an otherwise effective performance and it seems typical of the Spaniard’s luck at the moment. If he can continue with the sharpness he showed at the weekend, he should run riot against Fulham.

If justifying price tags is the order of the day, then the Costa Rican's performance will also be closely analysed. A lacklustre debut which saw him hauled off at half-time in the 1-1 draw with Blackburn was followed up by a two-minute cameo off the bench against Manchester City. A cup derby against local rivals presents a perfect chance for the attacker to kick-start his Fulham career with a bang.

Editor's Prediction

The amount of chances Chelsea created at Old Trafford was almost unprecedented and though the Blues did not get the result they were after, if they can carry that momentum through then Fulham shouldn’t be too big a challenge. They will outgun their local rivals and should come away with a pretty comprehensive victory.
