  • But questions like that are for a different time. Tonight was all about Atletico - they were brilliant. 4-1. Winners of the European Super Cup. I look forward to seeing more of them this season. That's it from me, I've been Jay Jaffa and I'll hopefully see you again soon.
  • So that's two possible trophies, two defeats. Conceded seven, scored three. Di Matteo's had a strange start to life as a manager of the European champions, because they are flying in the Premier League. Wonder what Abramovich makes of all of this...
  • 90' + 3'
But that is that. Diego Simeone and his staff celebrate wildly on the sidelines as Atletico defeat the European champions Chelsea 4-1. Fantastic entertainment in Monaco tonight. Man of the match? Well, there's only one option - Falcao.
  • 90' + 1'
Well, it's so nearly five for Atletico! Emre trots into the Chelsea box and rather than shooting rolls it across Cech to the back post. David Luiz - who I don't think tracked back from right-wing - slides in and deflects the ball onto the post. That would have been cruel.

Adios Falcao! Thanks for what has been a mesmeric display in goalscoring! The Colombian has more or less won the game on his own with a sensational hat-trick and takes the applause as he's substituted for new-signing (and familiar name) Emre Belozoglu.
  • 87'
    SubstitutionRadamel Falcao Emre Belözoğlu
  • 87'
Bundle, bundle, bundle. First Torres, then Lampard and Oscar. All three try to clatter their way through a series of challenges on the edge of the box but find little success. Atletico holding firm.
  • 85'
Felipe Luis marauds forward from left-back to receive a ball inside the box and fire across Cech. Chelsea's shot-stopper does enough to prevent the goal though, holding on at the second attempt. The game is suddenly very ragged - David Luiz is playing right wing for some reason...
  • 84'
Atletico get in behind the Chelsea defence and although it's a two on one for a moment, Ashley Cole recovers on his flank to intercept a cross aimed for Falcao.
  • 82'

Oscar does well on the left to win the ball and turn it inside to Mata. The Spaniard links up with Hazard and receives a return through ball but his reluctance to use his right-foot wastes the chance. By the time Mata decides to hit an effort on his right, the angle has closed and it's smashed over the bar.
  • 79'
There's more purpose to Chelsea's play now - too late - but it is there. Atletico are content just to sit back and soak it up. I reckon there's one more goal left in this one.
  • 75'
    GoalGary Cahill
GOAL!!!! Lampard's outswinging corner is attacked by Cahill and though he fails to connect in a huddle of players, he is the first to react as the ball drops in the area. His toe-poked smash (the toe-smash as I'm calling it) fizzes through Courtois into the back of the net. "We're going to win 5-4" sing the Chelsea fans. Optimistic.
  • 73'
Hazard's toiling away and in one of the first occasions that he's had the ball on the left, he zips past a couple of players and wins a corner. This lad has PACE.
  • 69'
And at the other end another free kick from wide threatens the Chelsea goal. Koke's inswinging ball from the left evades everyone except for Cech who just reacts in time to palm the cross behind for a corner. Where are the Chelsea defence? John Terry's worth is multiplying in his absence.
  • 68'
That's better! Oscar arrives on the edge of the box to connect with a fine strike from 20 yards. His effort just flies wide of the goal though and Courtois' clean sheet is safe, for now.
  • 67'
Well played Oscar. The Brazilian won the ball deep in his half before beating a couple of men and getting fouled. That was the first glimpse we've seen of him and I think I like it. Still, he's a bit too deep to affect the game for my liking.
  • 66'
Excellent pressure from Atletico puts Cahill in trouble and the centre-back gives the ball away. It may not lead to anything of note but it's remarkable to see such high intensity from a team 4-0 up.
  • 63'
Ivanovic is once again denied by Filipe Luis down the right flank and that has been a constant source of frustration for Chelsea. As good as he is defensively, Di Matteo must want, and indeed, need more from his full-back. Guess that's where Azpilicueta comes in...

GOAL!!!! And it's 4-0 to Atletico! It's not even particularly good. The cross from wide bobbles around, breaks to Miranda, the centre-back who lifts the ball over the onrushing Cech to score. Gary Cahill almost clears off the line but his best efforts just result in the Englishman careering over the line with the ball. Diego Simeone dances down the touchline with joy. 4-0! Wow.
  • 60'
A spell of possession for Atletico is ended as Torres clips Juanfran on the right flank and it's a free-kick in a dangerous position...
  • 57'
Hmmm. Oscar initiates a break and volleys a pass over the Atletico defence for Hazard to chase. The midfielder races onto the ball and definitely gets a toe on the ball before Godin comes across to sweep him to the floor but referee Damir Skomina waves play on - as he has done for much of the game.
  • 56'
    SubstitutionAdrián Cristian Rodríguez
  • 56'
At the other end, Chelsea have plenty of possession around the box but can only muster a meek shot straight at Courtois. The Belgian hoofs the ball straight out though and it leads to the Spanish club's first substitution: Christian Rodriguez on for Adrian Lopez.
  • 53'
Corner to Atletico and though the first ball is headed clear, Mario Suarez whallops a first time volley that I'm sure Cech will be relieved to see blocked behind for another corner. Cech collects the second one.
  • 50'
First chance of the half and it's created entirely by Torres. The Spaniard has the ball on the edge of the box, drops his shoulder, glides past Adrian and fires a low drive that just skids wide of Courtois' right-hand post. Encouraging.
  • 49'
Decent possession from Chelsea in the opening stages but Mikel's ball into the right channel asks too much of Ivanovic and his attempted cross is easily cut out by Atletico.
  • 47'
Interestingly, Falcao's hat-trick is the first in a Super Cup final since Terry McDermott for Liverpool in 1977. Thanks Opta!
  • 46'
    SubstitutionRamires Oscar
  • 46'
We're back underway in Monaco and Oscar has come on for Ramires.
  • I've an interesting tactical theory for the Chelsea woes...Frank Lampard. This deeper role is new to him and against a counter-attacking side like Atletico I'd say his natural tendency to join attacks is outweighing his responsibility as a holding midfielder. The back four have been brutally exposed at times tonight.
  • I've just rewatched the three goals, and well...just brilliant. There are very few strikers in world football you could say have everything in their locker but I think the Colombian may be one of the few. His first touch is just superb.
  • I don't really know where Chelsea go from here. They've got just about their strongest team out there already. They don't have great striker options with only Daniel Sturridge capable of offering something different to Torres. But it's a more general problem - there's little direction in their attacks, no cohesion. It's very odd. Over to you Di Matteo...
  • And that's half-time! 3-0 to Atletico Madrid courtesy of Falcao's 2nd hat-trick in a week. Sensational.

    GoalRadamel Falcao
GOAL!!!!!! It's 3-0 and Atletico again pour forward and again they find their hitman...and AGAIN, Falcao provides the finishing touch to a lovely move. Arda Turan reached the edge of the Chelsea box but just delayed until Falcao arrived, threaded him in, and the Colombian made no mistake by smashing a left-footed shot low past Cech. Game over?
  • 43'
Still, there's a whole half to go and if anyone can conjure goals from nothing, it'll be this Chelsea side.
  • 41'
It's almost a return to the days of slow, turgid (but efficient) Mourinho-ball. Except this hasn't been efficient. Chelsea's build-up has lacked pace and movement and been all too predictable for Atletico to deal with.
  • 39'
Chelsea really are lacking cohesion. Hazard and Mata are having trouble finding the ball and when that duty is passed to the deeper players, such as David Luiz in this example - inevitably his passing is just short of quality.
  • 36'
ERM! A ridiculous collision of bodies, ricochets, handballs and woodwork just took place. Arda burst down the right (possibly offside) but squared the ball to the backpost for Adrian to tap home....except he doesn't. He mishits and sees the ball fly up and into his flailing arm/head! Play isn't stopped though and Falcao (surprise, surprise) arrives on cue to head into the net....except he DOESN'T. He smashes the ball against the post and Chelsea survive. Should be 3-0.
  • 33'
Lovely feet from Mikel of all people on the edge of the Atletico box create an opening for the Premier League side, but the eventual ball from Mata is rushed and overhit beyond Torres.
  • 30'
A slightly late tackle from Torres leads to an Atletico free-kick in a dangerous position but Cech deals with the cross, opting to punch to safety.
  • 29'
    Yellow CardBranislav Ivanovic
  • 28'
And as I say that, Atletico pounce. A break of no less than five players surge towards the Chelsea goal and although the eventual pass is good and falls to Gabi, the captain's touch and shot are a little too languid, allowing Cech to narrow the angle and make the save.
  • 27'
The game's definitely dropped in tempo for the last few minutes. Chelsea have still not shown their true colours and Atletico are happy to sit back and soak up the 'pressure'
  • 24'
We just got a cheeky glimpse of Eden Hazard doing what he does best. The Belgian received the ball off David Luiz in about as tight a spot as you could think of but a drop of the shoulder and a burst of acceleration later, he had escaped the defenders around him and started a Chelsea attack. Unfortunately his pass asked just too much of Torres.
  • 23'
He's hobbling but Ramires looks as though he'll enter the fray again, and in fact, he has.
  • 21'
So Chelsea are flagging and poor old Ramires has been given a whack on the inside of his knee in a 50/50 challenge. Mario Suarez comes off considerably better. Think of it as a kneecap to the inside of the knee and you'll get the picture. The Brazilian's not doing too well...

    GoalRadamel Falcao
GOAL!!! Give the man a glimpse and he'll probably score. Falcao collects the ball on the corner of the box, cuts back onto his left and even though you can see where he's going to place it and even though you can see Cech knows where he's going to place it, Falcao is still good enough to bend it in the far top corner. Sublime.

From the resulting throw-in a deep cross is headed just wide by Arda Turan. Close.
  • 16'
Mario Suarez and Mikel indulge in a spot of judo on the halfway line but when the ball breaks for Atletico, Adrian has another run at Ivanovic, accelerating past him and attmpting to clip over Cech. The big Czech keeper makes the save though.
  • 12'
Decent effort from Lampard as Chelsea create their first chance. Mata's cross is chested down and laid off by Hazard to the England midfielder on the edge of the box but his well-hit drive is blocked. Seconds later, Hazard finds room on the edge to fire a long range drive but it sails high and wide of Courtois' left-hand post.
  • 11'
Chelsea are still struggling to get into their stride here. Diego Simeone's side look solid at the back and confident in possession - a very nice start for the Spanish club.

GOAAAALLL!!!! It's been a great start from Atletico and as Falcao is threaded in behind the Chelsea defence, he takes his time, draws Cech out from his goal before clipping the ball delightfully over the keeper and past the backtracking David Luiz. 1-0 to Atletico Madrid!
  • 6'
Again Adrian is in behind Ivanovic down the left and his cross finds a man at the back post but his outstretched boot just fails to put the ball back onto Falcao's head.
  • 4'
MAJOR ACTION!!! A lovely ball down the left sees Felipe Luis in behind and a low cross invited Falcao to slam the ball onto the bar from 8 yards out. In the melee afterwards, I thought we'd see a penalty but play is waved on...close call.
  • 3'
High ball up to Falcao and he gets the first taste of the brute that is John Terry...no wait, it's David Luiz who clatters the Colombian. A new man perhaps?
  • 2'
Early possession for Chelsea but a raking Cahill diagonal soars over Hazard's head for a throw-in.
  • 1'
And we're off! Chelsea kicking from right to left.
  • I'm set, you're set. Lets do this. Prediction? 2-1 Chelsea. Mata and Lampard. Falcao for Atletico...
  • Not far from kick-off now. There's a delightful show taking place on pitch and the players have lined up in the tunnel ready for action...
  • You may also notice Thibaut Courtois in goal for Atletico. He'll be facing his parent club tonight in what should be a fantastic opportunity to impress Roberto Di Matteo. The Belgian shot stopper had a superb season in Spain last year and is widely regarded as the natural successor to Petr Cech. Time to shine!
  • So, two great teams lining-up in the same formation tonight as they compete for Uefa's Super Cup in Monaco. For the rumour-mongers amongst us, Daniel Sturridge is on the bench for Chelsea - so he'll be going nowhere tonight. Michael Essien is NOT on the bench though, so perhaps he's off somewhere. Who knows eh? Let's just worry about the football for the next couple of hours...
  • Atletico Madrid (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Filipe Luis; Mario Suarez, Gabi; Adrian, Koke, Arda Turan; Falcao
  • Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, David Luiz, Cole; Mikel, Lampard; Ramires, Hazard, Mata; Torres
  • Good evening everybody and welcome to the European Super Cup between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid. I'm Jay Jaffa and I'm here to take you through the game. Team news on the way.
