Commentary

The referee finally blows his whistle for the last time and Schubert celebrates a morale-boosting draw against a City team that did enough to reach the knockout stage without dazzling. The were far from their best all night long, with their faltering front line lacking the speed and urgency needed to fully test a determined Gladbach defence. The home side performed well and certainly deserve to leave with a point, and it's one that means they should qualify for the Europa League.
FULL-TIME: BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY
90' + 2' City are continuing to pass the ball around in the middle of the pitch, indicating that Guardiola is happy with the point. They don't seem to be in any rush to push forward and are just waiting for the referee to blow his whistle for the final time.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be two minutes of added time.
89' After spending an age waiting for a pass to be fired up to him, Aguero is finally able to reach the ball on the edge of the Gladbach penalty area. However, as soon as he does he's closed down by Vestergaard and loses out to the big Dane.
88' It's all City at the moment but, as has been the case for most of the evening, they're struggling to find a way through the sea of black shirts camped in front of them. They haven't do anywhere near enough to trouble the home side, who, at the moment, are looking comfortable defending against their opponents.
86' Silva makes a great run into the left-hand side of the Gladbach penalty area before latching on to a poked through-ball from Aguero, but as soon as he reaches the ball and takes on Sommer, the linesman's flag is rightly raised for offside.
85' Free header for Otamendi! City win themselves a corner over on the left wing and it's fired by Silva right on to the head of Otamendi. The centre-back is in a great position in front of goal, but he's unable to hit the target with his headed effort and ends up sending it a few yards wide of the near post.
A. Hahn
Raffael
Borussia M'gladbach
84' Gladbach have made their final alteration of the evening, with Raffael making way for Hahn.
82' Gladbach push forward once again and do well to win themselves a throw-in after Navas runs the ball out of play. It's sent short and worked over to Raffael, who then links up with Johnson, but as soon as the latter makes contact with the ball, City are awarded a free-kick for a foul on Gundogan by Raffael.
80' After dealing with the danger, Gladbach charge forward on a rare foray into the City half of the pitch. Hofmann, who has seen little of the ball since coming on for Traore, gets himself into a good position over on the right wing before sending a cross towards Johnson, but it's completely overhit and fails to find the American.
79' City keep pushing forward as they try to find a late goal that would surely result in them taking home all three points. Navas patiently holds up the ball deep down the right flank before finally firing a cross into the middle of the penalty area, but it's overhit and leaves Aguero stranded and frustrated in front of goal.
77' De Bruyne twist and turns down the left wing before firing a low cross off Elvedi and out for a City corner. The Belgian steps up and curls a cross towards the near post, but Vestergaard is there on the edge of the six-yard box to clear the danger with a bullet header that reaches the halfway line.
75' Navas comes back once again on another good run before trying to tee up Aguero, but this time Christensen darts in front of the Argentine and stops the ball from finding him on the penalty spot. It's certainly been a tough night for the City striker.
74' Aguero goes close! Navas flies into the right-hand side of the Gladbach box on a great run before firing a low cross into the middle of the penalty area and towards Aguero, who is in a great position in front of goal, but the striker is unable to make decent contact with the ball and ends up sending it away from Sommer.
72' The resulting set-piece is sent short and worked over to Kolarov, who tries to curl a cross into the Gladbach penalty area. It's stopped by the hand of Raffael and results in another free-kick, but the City players immediately ask for a second yellow card as well.
Raffael
Yellow Card
Borussia M'gladbach
71' And now Raffael receives a yellow card after clattering into Gundogan with a poorly-timed sliding challenge that results in a free-kick for City in a dangerous position over on the left flank.
T. Jantschke
Yellow Card
Borussia M'gladbach
69' A Raffael shot fails to trouble Bravo and bounces out to Sagna on the left flank. The full-back then bursts forward on a marauding run but has it brought to an end by Jantschke, who flies in and brings the substitute crashing to the ground with a mistimed challenge that sees him receive a booking.
B. Sagna
R. Sterling
Manchester City
68' City have made their first alteration of the night, with Sagna coming on to replace Sterling.
67' Thumping strike from De Bruyne! The Belgian cuts inside from the left flank and finds himself in a pocket of space 25 yards away from goal before unleashing a rocket of a shot, but Sommer does well to tip it over the top of the crossbar with a smart one-handed save.
66' A deep cross from Gundogan picks out Sterling, who immediately side-foots the ball back to Aguero. The striker is in a good position in front of goal and tries to shoot, but he's unable to do so after being closed down by a sea of black shirts.
64' Raffael almost puts Gladbach back in front! Straight from the restart, the home side move the ball around well before Raffael skips past Stones and shoots, but his low strike ends up rolling agonisingly wide of the near post.
Fernandinho
Yellow 2nd/RC
Manchester City
63' RED CARD! Now it's City who are down to 10 men! Fernandinho pulls back Raffael off the ball and immediately receives a second yellow card from the referee, despite the Brazilian's protestations at the decision. Guardiola doesn't look too pleased either!
62' Sterling and De Bruyne link up well deep down the left flank as the latter tries to penetrate the penalty area. He takes on Strobl and attempts to muscle his way past the defensive midfielder, but the latter holds firm and denies the Belgian a way past before winning Gladbach a free-kick near to the byline.
J. Vestergaard
M. Dahoud
Borussia M'gladbach
60' Gladbach have decided to make their second change of the night, with Dahoud making way for Vestergaard in a defensive switch.
59' Otamendi charges through the middle of the pitch and tees up Navas, who then pokes a quick pass into the right-hand side of the Gladbach penalty area and towards De Bruyne. The Belgian meets it well before firing a low cross into the heart of the box, but it's sent too near to Sommer and is easily dealt with by the goalkeeper.
57' Silva and De Bruyne link up well on the edge of the Gladbach box before the latter pokes a deft pass into the path of Gundogan. The German is quickly put under pressure and is unable to keep the ball in play after sending it over to the left wing with a heavy touch, allowing the hosts to hold on once again.
55' As expected, it's all City at the moment as they immediately try to put plenty of pressure on the 10 men of Gladbach. The home side have every player behind the ball as they attempt to keep the visitors, who smell blood, at bay for as long as possible.
53' Sterling cuts inside from the right wing before firing a bouncing cross towards the near post and into the path of Aguero, but the striker is unable to make decent contact with the ball and ends up poking it out of play before he can get it under control.
L. Stindl
Yellow 2nd/RC
Borussia M'gladbach
51' RED CARD! Big blow for Gladbach! Stindl, who has been one of their most important players tonight, loses his head and barges into Otamendi off the ball, leaving the referee with no choice but to give the captain his marching orders.
51' Sterling scores, but it's ruled out for offside! De Bruyne causes all sorts of problems on the edge of the Gladbach penalty area before out-muscling Wendt and teeing up Sterling, but the winger is just a yard or so offside and the linesman's flag is raised as soon as he pokes the ball into the back of the net.
50' De Bruyne steps up and curls a beautiful cross from the free-kick that picks out Stones at the far post, but the centre-back is put under plenty of pressure by Elvedi and is unable to make decent contact with the ball and Sommer is just about able to deal with the danger.
M. Dahoud
Yellow Card
Borussia M'gladbach
49' Navas picks up the ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately spins past Dahoud before being dragged to the ground by the youngster, who becomes the latest player to receive a yellow card and gives away a free-kick in a dangerous position.
47' City, who seem to have reverted to a back three, immediately work the ball around nicely deep inside the Gladbach half of the pitch before Gundogan fires in a cross from the left wing, but it's poorly hit and ends up sailing several yards over the top of the crossbar.
46' And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It's been a tough and disappointing opening 45 minutes for City, but they deserve to be level after putting together a lovely attacking move. De Bruyne and Sterling have looked far more comfortable since switching to a 4-1-4-1 formation, with the latter seeing much more joy over on the right flank. Gladbach have impressed, particularly on the counter, but started to leave gaps available at the back, and that could prove to hurt them again if they don't improve after the break.
HALF-TIME: BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY
K. De Bruyne
Assist
Manchester City
45' + 1' That was lovely play by De Bruyne, who made a great run into the penalty area. City have been largely poor thus far but the Belgian has arguably been one of their most impressive players.
David Silva
Goal
Manchester City
45' + 1' GOAL! City have equalised at the vital moment! De Bruyne flies into the right-hand side of the box on a great run and links up brilliantly with Sterling near to the byline. He manages to keep the ball in play before cutting it back to Silva, who, just a few yards away from goal, is easily able to poke a shot into the back of the net.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' What an opportunity for Aguero! A lovely pass picks out Sterling, who had made a great run into the right-hand side of the Gladbach penalty area. The winger takes a quick touch before cutting the ball back to Aguero, but the latter's first-time shot fails to beat Sommer and is well saved by the goalkeeper at the near post.
Fernandinho
Yellow Card
Manchester City
43' Another lacklustre attacking move from City fails to result in a chance on goal, allowing Dahoud to kick-start a quick counter-attack. He flies through the middle of the pitch and beats three players before taking on Fernandinho, but the Brazilian ends up tripping him to the ground and receives a yellow card for the poorly-timed challenge.
42' Chance for Dahoud! The youngster is left in far too much space on the edge of the City penalty area and quickly unleashes a rocket of a shot after receiving the ball, but there's slightly too much menace behind the effort and it ends up sailing over the top of the crossbar.
J. Hofmann
I. Traoré
Borussia M'gladbach
41' Traore makes his way off the pitch and immediately heads down the tunnel, and it's Hofmann who comes on to replace him.
40' There's a brief break in play after Traore goes down injured off the ball. He points to his groin and seems to indicate to the touchline that he's struggling with a nasty-looking injury that could end up bringing his game to a premature end.
39' Wendt almost makes it 2-0! A terrible throw from Bravo can only find the left-back, who immediately flies forward on a brilliant run. He weaves his way through a sea of City players and skips past Kolarov before shooting, but Bravo is just about able to close down the angle before parrying the strike out for a corner.
38' A half-hearted City attacking move breaks down and Gladbach immediately hit the home side on a quick counter. Stindl finds plenty of joy on the edge of the penalty area before teeing up Elvedi, who beats his marker with ease and forces Bravo into making a good save.
37' A cross-cum-shot from De Bruyne 25 yards out ends up deflecting out of play for another City corner. This time the set-piece successfully finds Otamendi, but the Argentine is unable to hit the target with his effort and Gladbach survive once again.
35' Terrific save by Sommer! City win themselves a corner over on the right flank, and it's fired right on to the foot of Gundogan on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder is in a pocket of space and able to unleash a low shot under no pressure whatsoever, but Sommer gets down well to tip it round the near post.
33' Sterling, who is now operating over on the right flank with Navas just behind him at right-back, cuts inside and heads towards the edge of the penalty area before trying to pick out Gundogan, but the ball ends up flying over the head of the German and over to the opposite wing.
31' Big call by the referee! De Bruyne flies down the right flank and cuts inside before trying to pick out Aguero inside the penalty area, but the striker ends up giving away a free-kick after dragging Christensen to the ground. The striker doesn't look at all happy with the decision, but the referee isn't at all interested in listening to his protests.
30' Gladbach break forward quickly and do well to work the ball over to Traore on the right flank, but the winger is unable to find a way past Kolarov on the edge of the box and ends up firing a low shot off the outstretched foot of the Serbian and away from danger.
29' Sterling looks frustrated over on the left wing, where he's struggled to get into the game, leaving him isolated for long periods. He charges down the flank and puts pressure on Elvedi, but he's unable to steal the ball away from the full-back and ends up giving away a free-kick.
27' Gladbach put City under plenty of pressure and win themselves a corner that causes problems for the visitors. The ball pinballs around the penalty area before falling to Strobl, but the midfielder's fierce strike ends up bouncing off Otamendi before it can test Bravo.
25' Silva twists and turns just outside of the Gladbach penalty area before poking a lovely through-ball into the box and towards De Bruyne, but just as it looks as if he's about to reach the ball, the Belgian is out-muscled by Wendt and is unable to get a shot away.
Raffael
Goal
Borussia M'gladbach
23' GOAL! Gladbach have taken the lead! Stindl out-muscles Stones far too easily over on the left wing before flying down the flank on a great run. He cuts towards the penalty area and then tees up Raffael, who, in a pocket of space on the edge of the box, takes a quick touch before rifling a thumping shot past Bravo.
22' Sterling, who has seen very little of the ball thus far, cuts inside from the left flank and links up with Silva in the middle of the pitch before trying to test Sommer from 25 yards out, but his shot is quickly closed down and ends up bouncing into the hands of the Swiss goalkeeper.
21' Elvedi does wonderfully well to push his way past two City players before cutting the ball back to Traore. The latter then spots a great run forward from Johnson and tries to pick him out at the far post, but his curling cross is slightly misplaced and can only find Bravo.
L. Stindl
Yellow Card
Borussia M'gladbach
20' An accidental handball by Johnson results in a free-kick for City, which is taken quickly. It's sent short to De Bruyne, but as soon as the Belgian makes contact with the ball he's clattered into from behind by Stindl, who receives the first yellow card of the game as a result.
18' Silva drifts out to the right wing and picks up the ball in a pocket of space before picking out Aguero inside the Gladbach box, but the Argentine ends up slipping at the vital moment and is unable to keep the ball from rolling out for a goal-kick.
16' Sterling cuts inside from the left flank and pokes a deft pass into the Gladbach penalty area as he tries to pick out De Bruyne, but Christensen reads the danger well and darts across the box to cut out the danger before the ball can find the Belgian.
14' City revert to patiently passing the ball around inside the Gladbach half of the pitch as they try to find a way through the sea of black shirts camped in front of them. The home side have looked comfortable defensively thus far, with every available player behind the ball whenever City are in possession.
12' Navas flies down the right wing on a great run before curling a cross into the heart of the Gladbach penalty area and towards Aguero. There's slightly too much power behind the ball, however, and it flies just over the head of the Argentine striker, allowing Elvedi to meet it at the far post before clearing the danger.
11' Raffael twists and turns just outside of the City penalty area as he embarks on another purposeful run forward, but Otamendi does well to charge out of the box and dispossess the Brazilian with a crunching tackle before the Gladbach forward can get any closer to the box.
9' Silva latches on to the ball deep down the right flank before winning City their second corner of the game. Once again, the Spaniard curls a dangerous cross into the middle of the Gladbach box, but this time Sommer is easily able to punch it away under very little pressure.
7' Great chance for Johnson! Raffael flies through the middle of the pitch on a wonderful run before poking a pass into the path of Johnson just inside the City penalty area. The American meets the ball well before trying to slide it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, but Bravo is there to stop the effort with a strong save.
6' City lose the ball in the middle of the pitch and allow Gladbach to push forward on their first attacking move of the game. It initially looks as if it breaks down due to good defending from Stones but the hosts come back once again through Dahoud, who muscles his way towards the box before sending a bouncing shot into the hands of Bravo.
4' Silva steps up and curls the resulting set-piece into the heart of the penalty area, where it finds Fernandinho in a good position in front of goal, but he's unable to direct his headed effort towards goal and ends up sending it sailing over the top of the crossbar.
3' City dominate possession during the opening stages of the game as they try to put Gladbach under plenty of early pressure. They move the ball around patiently before Navas fires in a low cross from the right flank, but Jantschke is there to thump the ball out for a corner.
1' And we're off! City get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, City boss Pep Guardiola has made four alterations to the team that featured in the victory away to Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Bacary Sagna, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Nolito making way for John Stones, Jesus Navas, Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva.
Andre Schubert has decided to make two changes to the Gladbach side that started the 2-1 defeat against Cologne on the weekend, with Tony Jantschke and Fabian Johnson coming into the starting line-up to replace Jannik Vestergaard and Thorgan Hazard, respectively.
Manchester City substitutes: Caballero, Clichy, Sagna, Fernando, Sane, Nolito, Iheanacho.
Manchester City XI (3-5-1-1): Bravo; Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov; Navas, Gundogan, Fernandinho, Silva, Sterling; De Bruyne; Aguero.
Borussia Monchengladbach substitutes: Sippel, Schulz, Rutten, Vestergaard, Benes, Hofmann, Hahn.
Borussia Monchengladbach XI (4-2-3-1): Sommer; Elvedi, Christensen, Jantschke, Wendt; Dahoud, Strobl; Traore, Stindl, Johnson; Raffael.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
This is the second time in as many years that the two sides have met in Monchengladbach, and the last contest resulted in a 2-1 win for City thanks to an injury-time Sergio Aguero penalty. The Argentine scored a hat-trick during the clash at the Etihad in September and looks set to cause problems for the Gladbach defence once again this evening.
As for Gladbach, they’ve suffered a tough start to the new Bundesliga season, resulting in them currently sitting in a disappointing 13th place in the table with just 12 points from 11 games. A 2-0 win against second-tier Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal is the only victory from their last six contests, leaving Schubert with a mountain to climb if they are to pull off the shock win they need to give them a chance of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League.
City are certainly the favourites heading into this evening’s game, and Gladbach boss Andre Schubert was quick to admit that in the build-up. The Citizens comfortably won 4-0 when the two teams last met in September, whilst they have lost just one of their last six games, with three of the previous four ending in victories.
An impressive 3-1 win against Barcelona three weeks ago means that City are still in with a chance of topping Group C, and another victory here today will ensure that the race for first place goes right to the wire. The Spanish champions currently sit two points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s men but tonight face a Celtic side that they thrashed 7-0 in their opening group stage clash.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Champions League group stage game between Borussia Monchengladbach and Manchester City at Stadion im Borussia-Park.
