What a bitterly disappointing night for Manchester City and Roberto Mancini. The Premier League champions have once again failed miserably in the group stage of the Champions League, finishing bottom of Group D without a single win to their name; a first for an English club in this competition. Missing out on the Europa League may well be a blessing in disguise as far as the league is concerned, but the club's wealthy owners have previously expressed their desire to build the City brand in Europe. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, will now be considered as one of the favourites to reach Wembley in May after absolutely storming past City, Real Madrid in Ajax to top the so called 'group of death'.
FULL-TIME: Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Manchester City
90' + 2'
Yellow CardMario Balotelli
90' + 2'
Dortmund try to end the night on a high as Lewandowski looks for 18-year-old Bittencourt on the run but Kompany shepards the ball out for a goal kick.
Zabaleta hopefully crosses into the box from deep but Weidenfeller comes out to catch comfortably. Balotelli then shows dissent towards the referee, after giving away a free kick for swinging an arm out in a challenge against Santana.
Aguero slips through Mario Balotelli with a cute through-pass but the Italian is flagged offside as he watches Weidenfeller stop his effort.
Chance! Sergio Aguero gets in behind the Dortmund defence and races into the box but can't beat Weidenfeller who comes racing out of his goal to make a good block.
Lewandowski is involved again as he turns brilliantly away from Garcia but then hesitates before shooting allowing Kompany to recover and make a challenge.
Great save from Joe Hart! It's more good work from Blaszczykowski who plays in his compatriot Lewandowski who takes a touch before having an acute-angled strike blocked by Hart, who did well to make himself big.
Great defending from Schmelzer in the six-yard box to clear a Tevez cross from the left before Maicon can get his head onto it. Manchester City pressing for the equaliser now.
Slightly selfish from Lewandowski as he elects to shoot from range rather than pick out Grosskreutz in space out wide. The Polish striker sends it high and wide before receiving a ear bashing from his team-mate.
What a chance! Leitner has a golden chance to double BVB's lead but side-foots his effort wide of the near post, after a brilliant cut-back from the impressive Blaszczykowski.
Manchester City are now enjoying their best spell of possession in the match but aren't working the ball into dangerous areas as they continue to struggle to penetrate the Dortmund defence.
Felipe Santana looks for Schieber with a long ball from the back but the German striker is caught offside. Moments later, City look for Mario Balotelli with the same ball and get the same result.
Pundits everywhere are sharpening their knives as Samir Nasri is replaced by Pablo Zabaleta, meaning Mancini is opting for the much maligned three at the back.
Chance! Carlos Tevez somehow wriggles his way through three Dortmund defenders before powering a shot straight at Weidenfeller. Mancini's side fail to do anything with the resulting corner.
Perisic turns one way then the other before attempting an ambitious chip over Hart from outside the area. Meanwhile, Mario Balotelli is greeted by a chorus of boos from the home fans as he replaces Edin Dzeko for City.
Carlos Tevez finds some space on the right as City bounce forward off a Dortmund attack but Felipe Santana does well to head away the Argentine's cross.
Almost another for Dortmund! The hosts almost double their lead as Schieber is played through on goal, but the striker underhits his attempt to chip the out-rushing Hart.
Yellow CardJoleon Lescott
GOAL! The hosts have the lead and it's Julian Schieber who opens the scoring with a tap-in from close range. Second half substitute Blaszczykowski deserves a lot of credit for delivering a delicious low cross which left the German striker with very little to do. Dortmund lead!
Another good save! Hart is called into action again, this time denying Grosskreutz with a smart stop low at his near post. Two fine stops from the Englishman to keep his side on level terms.
Good save! Perisic tests Joe Hart with a dipping volley hit with power from just outside the area. The City shot-stopper was equal to the effort and tipped it over the bar.
Dortmund are the front foot with Lietner and Perisic combining down the left-hand side before Schmelzer horribly miscues his shot, eventually seeing it go out for a throw-in.
Close! Dortmund are inches away from taking the lead as Mats Hummels comes a whisker away from turning in Schmelzer's free kick at the far post. A far more lively start to the second half from both sides.
Chance! It's a great opportunity for Edin Dzeko to catch Dortmund napping after the break. The Bosnian rises to meet Samir Nasri's cross but heads straight at Roman Weidenfeller from only a few yards out.
Two changes to report for Dortmund for the second half. Klopp has taken off Marco Reus, the best player on the pitch in the first half, and replaced him with Poland captain Jakub Blaszczykowski.
Borussia Dortmund take the kick-off to gets us underway in the second period.
Matchday six generally throws up a few dead rubbers as teams take to the field with their fates are already decided. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case tonight as neither Borussia Dortmund or Manchester City have offered up much in the form of excitement so far. It's goalless at the break with Reus coming closest to finding an opener when he struck the post in the 36th minute. Dzeko has threatened for the visitors but Mancini's side have been lacklustre on the whole.
HALF-TIME: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City
Dzeko fires in a low cross as City look for a late first half lead but Santana puts it out for a corner. The Bosnian forward then beats the defender to the corner at the far post but heads well wide.
Some neat passing on the edge of the box between Gundogan and Perisic sees the latter curl a shot towards goal, but Joe Hart easily makes the save.
Dangerous counterattack from Dortmund as Leitner drives forward from midfield before finding Perisic out wide but the Croatian wastefully overhits the final ball toward Schieber.
Mats Hummels dribbles out of defence and suddenly finds himself running at the City defenders. The big German eventually runs out of ideas and prods the ball in the direction of Reus allowing Nastasic to cut it out.
Chance! Marco Reus shaves the outside of Joe Hart's near post with a venomous drive from just inside the box. The German only just missed the target after he cut in from the right flank to create space for a left-footed drive.
Close! Edin Dzeko hits a dipping shot from about 20 yards out to force Weidenfeller into a good save low to his right-hand post. Sinclair sends in a useful-looking cross from the resulting corner but Dortmund survive the danger.
Nervous moment for Manchester City as Javi Garcia turns into trouble on the edge of his own area. Maicon does well to intervene and clear the danger for Mancini's side.
Garcia gets booked for throwing Perisic down to the floor before the Croatian can get a cross in from the left. Perisic himself takes the free kick but floats it straight into Joe Hart's grateful arms.
Yellow CardJavi García
Marco Reus has a chance to stretch his legs for the first time after Grosskreutz' through-ball releases the young German. Matija Nastasic does really well to keep up with the Dortmund forward and deny him a shooting opportunity.
Jurgen Schmelzer's cut-back is played just behind Schieber but the striker then recovers only to get minimal contact with his header from a Perisic's cross from the left side.
Manchester City produce their best move of the game and come close to grabbing the opening goal. Samir Nasri is released on the left flank after 20 or so passes from the visitors. The Frenchman squares the ball for Dzeko in the area but Schmelzer is there just into time to clear for a corner.
Marco Reus gets a reaction from the home crowd after skipping away from a couple of challenges but is stopped in his tracks before he can have a real run at the City defence.
Carlos Tevez evades a challenge on the halfway line and makes a run into the Dortmund area before playing it through to Samir Nasri. The Frenchman, however, can't protect the ball from Schmelzer, allowing the German to play it back to Weidenfeller in goal.
Both sides have been a bit wasteful in possession now. First Javi Garcia's long ball towards Dzeko is misdirected before Lietner misplaces a routine pass into Reus for the hosts.
Felipe Santana could be one weak link in the Dortmund defence for City to exploit. The Brazilian, deputising for Neven Subotic, has had a few dodgy touches and has given away the ball needlessly on more than one occasion.
First effort on goal comes from Kirch for Dortmund. His left-footed effort from just outside the area is palmed over the bar by the alert Joe Hart. Decent effort from the BVB youngster but the City shot-stopper always had it covered.
It's a bit of a slow start to the game. Dortmund haven't yet shown the urgency out of the blocks that we've come to expect from them, while City are struggling to keep possession with Javi Garcia and Gareth Barry in midfield.
Edin Dzeko tries to dribble his way into the area from the right flank but the Bosnian loses out to Mats Hummels as the City try to make an impression early on.
Time for Dortmund to strut their stuff in front of their home fans. The German champions give us a taste of the type of passing and interchange that has taken them to the top of Group D.
Samir Nasri's delivery fails to clear the first man but City keep the move alive through Scott Sinclair. The visitors switch the play before Barry eventually loses out to Lietner.
Early chance for the visitors, Gareth Barry delivers a free kick from a deep position on the right side but Dortmund clear for a corner.
Manchester City take the kick-off and we are underway!
There really is a cracking atmosphere inside BVB's steep sided stadium as both sides emerge from the tunnel, just moments away from kick-off now.
Meanwhile for Manchester City; Scott Sinclair makes his first ever Champions League appearance in a rare start for the visitors. Joleon Lescott and Javi Garcia also return to the side in place of Aleksander Kolarov and Yaya Toure, while Edin Dzeko starts instead of Sergio Aguero upfront.
So no Lukasz Piszcek, Mario Gotze or Robert Lewandowski in Klopp's starting line-up to face City, although the latter does have a place on the bench. Neven Subotic is also missing for the German champions; Felipe Santana partners Mats Hummels at the back.
Manchester City: Hart; Maicon, Lescott, Nastasic, K. Toure; Garcia, Barry, Nasri, Sinclair; Tevez, Dzeko. Subs: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Meppen-Walters, Evans, Aguero, Nimely, Balotelli.
Borussia Dortmund: Weidenfeller; Kirch, Felipe Santana, Hummels, Schmelzer; Gundogan, Leitner; Grosskreutz, Perisic, Reus; Schieber. Subs: Langerak, Piszcek, Gunter, Blaszczykowski, Amini, Bittencourt, Lewandowski.
Team news to follow..
Manchester City, on the other hand, go into the game with no chance of making the knockout rounds after a run of home draws and away defeats. Roberto Mancini, though, has another dilemma on his hands. The Italian has already expressed his concern over the Thursday fixtures that the Europa League involves but he surely can't send his team out to do anything other than try and win the match.
Who would have thought that Borussia Dortmund would go into matchday 6 with Group D already sewn up. When the groups were drawn BVB would have been happy just to qualify, but Jurgen Klopp's German champions have impressed home and away leaving the more fancied Real Madrid and Manchester City trailing in their wake.
