Both Lancashire clubs will be looking for fellow-strugglers Bolton to lose their Sunday fixture against West Brom, with the Lactics safe if they can better the Trotters' result

The hosts have just the one worry ahead of their relegation showdown with Wigan, Bradley Orr being that man, as the defender has not trained ahead of the game thanks to an Achilles injury.

Blackburn will most likely ditch the defensive set-up that saw them fail to register a shot on goal against Tottenham, and go back to four at the back while adding another in attack.

The Lactics, meanwhile, have a clean bill of health. Wigan’s surprise 4-0 win over Newcastle United saw them set out just three at the back, but they should revert to a more standard line-up at Ewood Park as they will know that a win will guarantee their safety if they better Bolton’s weekend result.

Steve Kean’s side will also need other results to help them out of the bottom three, but their current position is still very much a perilous one. If the Trotters win on Sunday and Rovers miss out on victory, Blackburn will be doomed to the second-tier of English football before the final game of the season.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Blackburn are unbeaten at home against Wigan in the Premier League and have won on seven of the 13 occasions that the two sides have met overall.
  • If Steve Kean’s outfit are relegated on Monday, it will be for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign when they finished 19th– their current position.
  • The Lactics’ best season in the Premier League to date was their first – when they finished 10th on 51 points.
  • In 112 games, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has achieved an average of 1.02 points per match – the third worst ratio in 20 years of the Premier League. Steve Kean is just behind him with 0.92 points a game.
  • The Rovers’ manager's current win ratio is 22.8 per cent after 57 games, while the Spaniard’s is 24.1%.
  • Only two players have scored hat-tricks for Wigan, the first was Henri Camara in 2005 and the second was Marcus Bent in 2007 against Blackburn.
  • Just the one Blackburn player, however, has scored more than three goals in a game and that was Yakubu (pictured right) when the striker grabbed four against Swansea City last December.

Players to watch

D. Hoilett

Position: Attacker

The Ontario native has frequently been the architect of Rovers’ attacks this season and has often got his own name on the score-sheet, two elements of the Canadian’s game that have put him under the eyes of the league’s top teams.

Another vital performance is required more than ever from the midfielder-come-forward, with Yakubu the man likely to be feeding off of Hoilett’s advances with the ball as they spring the trap on Wigan’s defence.

V. Moses

Position: Midfielder

Games: 0

Very much the personification of Wigan’s late season spirit in recent games, the attacker has been the life-force at the DW Stadium and grabbed two early goals on the way to an emphatic 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

Expect Moses to do a similar job to his counterpart Hoilett and get the Lactics moving on the attack, intimidating the Blackburn defenders and working efficiently with the likes of Franco Di Santo.

Editor's Prediction

This game has so much riding on the results of Sunday that the emotions ahead of this match will be heavily influenced beforehand and could inspire either team even further in their attempts to achieve survival.

Wigan’s incredible efforts during the run-in to the season have given them a great chance of safety, and despite playing against what should be a fighting Blackburn team (in contrast to the meek outfit that failed at White Hart Lane last week), another Lactics’ victory is on the cards following their impressive destruction of high-flying Newcastle a week ago.
