Another clean sheet for the German goalkeeper, he was superbly protected by his defence and the only shots he had to deal with lacked power and were straight at him.
The defender had a good game but he was lucky not to concede a penalty in the opening minutes with a clumsy tackle on David Silva. After the lucky escape he had a solid game against Dzeko.
The full-back had a busy evening attacking the City defence, he was able to charge forward and put pressure on Clichy. He was full of running but also looked comfortable when he was needed to defend, although this was very rare due to City’s lack of creativity.
D. Van Buyten
The Belgian central defender had a good game against his former club, he was strong and powerful against Dzeko and made sure the Bosnian hardly had a kick. He looked composed in possession and always had an easy pass to his midfielders.
The Bayern captain had an easy game as City rarely tested him at left-back, the one player that did cause him problems was Richards was his powerful runs but the experienced defender was able to cope easily. Going forward he was confident and delivered some dangerous crosses into the City penalty area.
The German playmaker controlled the game in central midfield, he was calm on the ball and was able to find plenty of space on the edge of the penalty area to test Hart. Unfortunately the only thing that let him down was his finishing as he saw two low shots easily saved by Hart, and when he was presented with an open goal in the first half he fired over from five yards from a low Muller cross.
The Frenchman was lively down the Bayern left and gave Micah Richards plenty to think about with his dangerous runs and close ball control. His pace caused lots of trouble and his ability to find a pass meant his side always kept possession and kept the pressure on their visitors.
The midfielder worked hard as did all his other team-mates and he looked to pull the strings whenever he could. His vision and passing were excellent and got his team into excellent positions to cause trouble for the City defence. He was replaced by Kroos in the closing ten minutes.
Full of energy in the centre of midfield alongside Schweinsteiger, he got through a lot of work to break up City’s attacks and made sure that his team-mates could break on the counter attack with the reassurance that he was protecting his back four.
The lone striker had a quiet start to the game but he was in the perfect place to open the scoring in the 38th minute after Hart had saved from Ribery and Muller. He added his second just before half time after Hart could only parry a Muller header, despite being in an offside position. He didn’t work as hard as he may have needed to as he allowed his midfielders to create the opportunities and then pouncing on the loose balls to grab both goals.
Had a lot of room on the right wing and he nearly created a goal for Schweinsteiger in the first half, he was also very close to opening the scoring himself but was denied by Hart only for Gomez to put the rebound in. He glided around the pitch effortlessly and was one of Bayern’s top performers.
The England goalkeeper had a shaky start with some of his distribution but he settled down and began to look comfortable. He was very unlucky with Bayern’s opening goal, he made an excellent double save from Ribery’s long shot and a Muller’s close follow-up but he could do nothing about Gomez’s volley into the back of the net. He was also unlucky with Gomez's second strike as the striker pounced on another loose ball.
The central defender looked composed on the ball as always but he had a challenge on his hands with Gomez. He was given very little protection from his midfield which made his life much harder, but he battled hard to keep Bayern out as much as he could.
The full-back was given his first Champions League start and had the task of keeping Ribery quiet which he managed to do. He was also able to cause danger in the Bayern half with his runs and set up an early chance for Dzeko which was hit straight at Neuer.
He was dangerous going forward but there were times that he was caught up field which allowed Muller some freedom to cause problems down the right.
Making his return to the City line-up the Ivorian settled back in well and looked comfortable alongside Kompany, he timed his challenges well but lost his man for both goals.
The Spaniard found it hard to get into the game as Bayern restricted the amount of space he had, he probably should have had a penalty in the opening minutes after Boateng’s challenge but otherwise he didn’t pose as much of a threat as he has done in the Premier League.
The Frenchman had a quiet opening half, he struggled to find space and was stranded up field when Bayern attacked his defence. His abilities on the ball are always good and he made some good runs but it was his final pass which let him down. He was replaced by Milner after a disappointing performance.
He began the game well, dominant in the challenge and always having an eye on goal. He was unlucky with a first half free kick which Neuer saved well, but otherwise he was very disciplined in his more defensive role in central midfield.
He struggled to get to grips with the pace that Bayern had in midfield and he was caught out on a couple of occasions on the counter attack. He was at fault for Bayern’s second goal, he let his marker get in front of him which led to Gomez eventually grabbing his second. Kolarov replaced him in the 73rd minute.
The striker had a tough evening with very little to work with, he couldn’t get enough power on an early cross from Richards but otherwise he was fighting against both central defenders and not surprisingly he was not successful. He was replaced by De Jong in the 55th minute.
Like Silva and Nasri he struggled to find space and make an impact in this game, the impressive Gustavo dropped back to keep an eye on him and either centre half also made an effort to keep him quiet.
- C. Pantilimon
- 6 J. Lescott
- 5 P. Zabaleta
Replaced Barry in the 73rd minute but struggled to make an impact playing on the left side of midfield.
N. de Jong
Replaced Dzeko in the 55th minute which enabled Yaya Toure to move further forward and Aguero to a more central role.
Replaced Nasri in the 69th minute but was unable to turn the game around for his side.
- 32 C. Tévez
