Shots on Target
And that is that! The referee blows his whistle for full-time and Chelsea take a 2-1 lead into the second leg at Stamford Bridge. Benitez's side were good value for their lead in the first half, but Basel improved after half-time. The hosts began to create more chances, but Chelsea were still generally the better side and are good value for the win.
90' + 4'
GOAL!!! Chelsea take the lead in the final minute of the match! Chelsea won a free kick right on the edge of the area and Luiz steps up and side-foots the ball into the bottom far corner. The wall did a poor job with that, as did Sommer in goal.
90' + 1'
What a save by Sommer! Moses heads the ball back across the goal and Terry diverts it towards goal, but the goalkeeper gets a hand in the way and Degen puts it behind.
Yellow CardFabian Schaer
Mata takes the free kick but it curls out for a goal kick.
Back come Chelsea with Moses, but the attacker is brought down by an awful tackle from Schar, giving Chelsea a good chance with a free kick.
Chelsea straight back on the attack. Mata crosses from the right and Sommer makes a meal of it, allowing it to drop to Torres. The goalkeeper slaps the ball away from Torres, but it drops to Lampard. His shot is poor and goes to Oscar who fires wide.
Yellow CardCésar Azpilicueta
Penalty GoalFabian Schaer
GOAL!!! Schar steps up to take the penalty and he puts it down the centre. Basel level the scores!
PENALTY TO BASEL! A cross is delivered from the right and Ivanovic is adjudged to have fouled Stocker in the centre as the winger tries to get on the end of the delivery. It looked harsh, but Basel won't care.
The free kick goes into the area and a goalmouth melee ensues. Stocker tries to get the ball back into the danger zone, but Chelsea get it away momentarily.
Yellow CardDavid Luiz
Free kick for Basel in a good position, but it could come at a price. Luiz's first touch was heavy, meaning he had to stretch to get to the second ball, but Philipp Degen got there first. The Chelsea man went in with his studs up and caught the Basel man badly on the shin.
Yellow CardDavid Degen
Mata takes the set-piece from the left and it curls all the way through to the far post where Ivanovic arrives late, but his effort on the stretch goes comfortably wide.
Good chance here now for Chelsea as they win a free kick on the left as David Degen bundles Juan Mata to the floor.
Substitutions being made and prepared at the moment, thus stopping the play for a few moments.
Almost a great chance for Basel as Dragovic produces an excellent pass into the right side of the area for Salah, but the Egyptian's first touch is heavy and Cech rushes out to collect.
In the last ten minutes or so the match seems to have become more open, which may be good news for Chelsea. They'll be wanting to keep it tight in midfield and at the back, but given how effective Benitez's side have been on the counterattack that may play into their hands.
Very good move by Chelsea as Hazard plays Moses into the area, who in turn squares for Torres in the centre. The striker meets the ball and hits it straight at Sommer from eight yards out, but the assistant had his flag up for offside. Torres will tell you he knew he was offside, hence why he missed.
Yellow CardAleksandar Dragovic
Dragovic goes in with a wild tackle on Torres. Both of his feet came off the ground, and although he got the ball he can count himself lucky to still be on the pitch. The referee has been lenient by giving him only a yellow card.
Yellow CardAshley Cole
This match has had an aura of predictability about it at times. Predictability in the sense that Chelsea have not looked like losing this at any moment. Basel have offered more in the second half, but the visitors still look in control.
Stocker is involved again down the left as he pokes the ball into the danger area, but just when it looked like the ball would sit kindly for Salah, Streller knocked the ball out of his path.
Mohamed El Nenny
Another Basel attack comes to an abrupt end as El-Nenny plays the ball over to Degen from the left. Degen knocks it just inside to Salah who tries to play the ball back towards the centre circle, but Hazard intercepts.
Basel have looked more dangerous in attack during the opening 15 minutes or so of the second half, but Chelsea still don't look particularly bothered at the back.
G. Serey Die
Chelsea go straight down the other end and win a corner of their own, but true to form in this match, they create nothing from it, giving Basel the chance to get back on the attack.
Mohamed El-Nenny takes the corner and he flies over Cech all the way to the far post where Streller is waiting, but he can only head the ball straight out of play.
The lively Stocker does well down the left again and he fortuitously wins a corner from a tame cross.
Basel claiming handball against Moses on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area, but the referee is not interested. He knew little about that even if it did hit his hand.
Sublime play by Hazard as he eases past Degen and then rides a heavy challenge from Schar before cutting the ball back towards the penalty spot for Torres. The Spaniard hits the ball first-time, but his effort cannons back off the post.
Basel have done a good job to minimalise Chelsea's influence on the ball so far in this second half, but they must do better to keep to stay tight at the back so not to be caught on the counterattack.
Hazard goes tumbling to the ground after a tackle from Schar in the Basel half, but the referee surprisingly waves play on. The defender is lucky to get away with that.
Stocker takes up possession on the left, passes into Streller in the area and continues his run across the edge of the area. Streller returns the ball to the winger and after faking a shot to beat a defender, he puts an effort on to the post. Excellent chance.
Hazard cuts in from the left, runs across Degen before shaping to shoot, but Aleksandar Dragovic firmly puts a foot in to dispossess the attacker.
The match is back underway for the second half.
Can you see a way back for Basel in this, or have Chelsea gone a long way to securing their place in the final with an away goal? Let me know your thoughts on Twitter: @RyanRyanBenson
All in all, that looked rather routine for Chelsea. Never have they looked threatened by Basel, while in attack they have been very dangerous, particularly on the counterattack without ever really getting out of second gear.
45' + 1'
And that is that for the first half as the referee blows his whistle for half-time.
Moses is played in behind Degen and plays a through ball for Hazard down the centre, but his first touch is poor meaning he has to stretch to get a shot away and his eventual effort goes wide.
Schar gives the ball away cheaply for Basel, giving Chelsea a good chance in attack. Torres holds off the defender and then feeds Ramires to his right. The Brazilian crosses and Torres attempts an overhead kick, but it lands at the feet of Hazard who blasts over.
Stocker has been plenty of the ball on Basel's left, but rarely has he crossed and he has created little. Lampard, Ramires and Luiz are doing jobs of tracking back and helping out in defence.
Again, the visitors look very organised at the back as they keep Basel at arm's length from their goal. Murat Yakin's men appear to be lacking any sort of cutting-edge in midfield.
Chelsea are currently allowing the hosts to have plenty of possession in the attacking third, but Stocker and Co. are having serious problems breaking them down. Rafa Benitez's side look very comfortable.
Another decent chance for Chelsea as Lampard passes to Ramires to his right in the area. The Brazilian takes a touch, letting the ball sit up before striking for the far corner, but Sommer saves Basel again.
Hazard comes in from the right, skips past a challenge and knocks the ball quite far ahead of him. However, he puts a strong challenge in on Geoffrey Serey Die to win the ball back and then finds Torres on the left. Torres cuts in and shoots, but Sommer saves.
Sommer comes out to collect the corner yet again, even while being fouled by Ivanovic.
Good play by Torres there as he goes alone into the Basel penalty area before shooting. Chelsea settle for a corner.
One thing Basel will be particularly disappointed about, I mean aside from the goal, is that they have not managed to get Salah into the game on the right wing yet.
Encouraging play by the hosts as Streller holds off Terry and manages to poke the ball through to Degen despite falling to the floor. Degen's low cross is blocked but it drops kindly for Stocker. The winger gets around Cole and fires into the sidenetting.
Lampard delivers the corner, but again Sommer gets to it, punching it away from the Basel penalty area.
Cole intercepts the ball and releases Moses. The winger proves a willing runner as he bursts forward and wins a corner from Schar.
The hosts are back on the front foot, however. Streller drops deep to collect the ball, turns and fires a clever ball into the area and over the Chelsea defenders, but Stocker couldn't quite reach it.
Disappointing from Basel as the corner comes to nothing and Chelsea clear their lines.
Philipp Degen gets forward down the right and centres the ball, but Ashley Cole deflects it behind.
Fantastic pass from Lampard as he smashes the ball all the way to Hazard on the right wing. The Belgian gets inside and on to his left foot. He crosses, but ultimately to no one and Basel get a goal kick.
Replays of that last incident show Stocker going to the floor in the penalty area, with Ivanovic all over him.
Basel attacking now as Valentin Stocker gets in behind Ivanovic and holds him off before squaring to Salah in the area, but the Egyptian's shot has all of the sting taken out of it by a John Terry block.
Fabian Schar has the free kick laid off for him and he unleashes an excellent strike which Cech tips over.
Good chance now for Basel as Marco Streller goes down under the pressure of Ivanovic. It looked a little harsh, but the free kick is given.
In the minutes leading up to that goal, Chelsea looked as though they had been sitting back, inviting pressure in order to counter, and that looks even more evident now they have the lead and an away goal.
GOAL!! Chelsea take the lead in Switzerland! Frank Lampard took the corner from the right and just when Branislav Ivanovic looked to get a head on it, the Serbian missed the ball and it went in off Moses. Big goal for Chelsea!
Lovely play by Hazard as he cuts inside a Basel man and picks out the run of Cesar Azpilicueta down the right. The Spaniard crosses and his compatriot Fernando Torres pokes it towards goal, but Sommer palms it behind. Great chance.
Composed start from the hosts as they look very confident on the ball and their passing has been very good in the centre so far. However, they are yet to really test Cech in the Chelsea goal.
Chelsea take the corner, but Yann Sommer comes and collects with ease.
Good play by Chelsea as Hazard weaves his way through the Basel midfield and then slides Victor Moses in to his right. Hazard gets the ball back, loses it and then wins it again. Eventually David Luiz finds Moses on the right who crosses and wins a corner.
Eden Hazard picks up the ball in the centre before gliding past two defenders. He then tries to squeeze between another two, but he is crowded out and the hosts have the ball back.
Basel win the first corner of the match and they play it short. Mohamed Salah gets the ball back and tries to cross it, but it sails comfortably over Petr Cech's goal.
Fairly tame first few minutes at St-Jakob Park as the two sides exchange possession. Basel's game plan of getting the wide men involved already looks obvious.
We're off in Switzerland.
Chelsea can become the first side to win Uefa's two top club competitions in reverse order in successive seasons.
The west London club have lost four of their last five European away matches, including back-to-back defeats on the road against Steaua Bucharest and Rubin Kazan.
Basel are unbeaten at home in this year’s Europa League campaign and have only failed to win once at St Jakob-Park since the start of September domestically.
An interesting looking Chelsea XI there, with veterans Terry and Lampard restored, Cole returning from injury, Luiz starting in midfield and Mata and Oscar rested. Rafa Benitez is famed and often criticised for his squad rotation. Will he regret resting two of the 'Three Amigos' tonight?
Chelsea: Cech; Azpilicueta, Terry, Ivanovic, Cole; Luiz, Lampard; Ramires, Hazard, Moses; Torres. Subs: Mata, Oscar, Turnbull, Bertrand, Cahill, Mikel, Benayoun.
Basel: Sommer; P. Degen, Schar, Dragovic, Park; Geoffroy, El-Nenny; Salah, F. Frei, Stocker; Streller. Subs: Vailati, Sauro, Steinhofer, D. Degen, Marcelo, Cabral, Zoua.
