One nervy moment as he was almost closed down with the ball at his feet early on, and made an unconvincing clearance off his line 10 minutes. Otherwise comfortable and dealt with the little Osasuna threw at him.
Early free-kick hit his arm, but there was no question of handball despite Osasuna's protests. Solid in defence, good distribution and ran all the way across the pitch to make a key interception late in the first half.
Drilled a shot harmlessly wide after five minutes, but attacked very well down the right and cut inside well to set up Xavi in the lead-up to the first goal. Later waltzed through the Osasuna defence and saw a powerful effort tipped over just before the break. A constant menace.
Started at left-back and made one very good tackle on Torres after 11 minutes. Popped up in the area at the other end but saw his shot blocked by Riesgo. Then blasted wildly over in the second half after he was set up by Cuenca. Was still throwing himself into tackles and blocking shots in the final minutes, even with Barca 3-0 up.
Popped up on both flanks as he switched with Pedro. Wasn't awarded a penalty when he went down under Damia's challenge on the edge of the box in the second half. Set up Puyol with a good run and low cross after 62 minutes, but the defender blasted over. Not his best game, but still a threat.
Solid in midfield and always available. Dependable if unspectacular, but Barca had the ball for virtually the whole match anyway, and ball-playing isn't really his role.
Received the ball outside the area and still had a lot to do to set up Fabregas, but made space and played the perfect pass to his younger team-mate for the first goal. Also set up Fabregas for the second with another incisive pass and almost made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time with a lovely curling free-kick which went into the side netting. Quality in the second half as well as he showed just why he is the final shortlist for the Ballon d'Or, and set up Messi for the fourth goal late on.
Played in central defence alongside Pique and was largely untroubled as he continued to look the part at the back. Made a great last-ditch tackle in second half when Osasuna could could have got back into it.
Opened the scoring with a clinical first as he slotted home with a low shot unchallenged, and made it 2-0 with a delightful lob. Slid a low shot across goal when he could have had his hat-trick in the second half. Then set up the third goal with a pinpoint cross for Messi to head home.
Played a wonderful cross-field ball to Alves in the lead-up to the first goal, then should have scored later on as he hit his shot straight at Riesgo after that. Some neat touches and got forward well down the left, linking up well with both Cuenca and Pedro.
Lively down the left early on, but fired woefully wide after 12 minutes. His shot from the edge of the box was later saved at the second time of asking by Riesgo. Replaced by Messi with just over half an hour left.
Came off his line to dive at the feet of Pedro early on, then denied Thiago and Puyol. Made a point-blank range save from Messi in the second half, but could do little about the goals.
Let himself be drawn across as Fabregas was left alone to make it 1-0. Then booked for late challenge on Alves and, like Damia, allowed Messi time and space to head the third.
Struggled to deal with the pace of Pedro in the opening stages and was nowhere to be seen as Cesc was left all alone to score the opener. Lucky to get away with pushing Cuenca in the face and could have conceded a penalty as he brought down the Barca youngster. Poor marking allowed Messi in to head the third.
Failed to get close enough to Fabregas on the second goal and allowed Messi too much space for the fourth as he and his team-mates were given the runaround by Barca.
Came up against a Dani Alves in excellent form and was only able to push the Brazilian inside, where he also looked dangerous and from where he helped create the opening goal. Failed to close down Fabregas as the former Arsenal man set up Barca's third.
A good outlet down the right in the first few minutes but faded after that and had little tangible impact in an attacking sense.
Blasted an early free-kick into the wall and appealed for a penalty as it hit Pique on the arm. The Iranian then fired a shot off target after half an hour and hit another free-kick straight at Pinto. Showed some decent touches in midfield but didn't see enough of the ball.
Outclassed in the centre of midfield and limited on the ball when he did have it. Worked hard but was mostly left chasing shadows.
Blasted over a great opportunity when all alone at far post in second half, but saw little of the ball apart from that and was forced to track back for most of the evening.
A passenger for most of the game as he chased back but was unable to stem the tide and barely inexistent in an attacking sense. Replaced late on.
All alone up front and left to feed off scraps as his side were starved of possession. Never really threatened when he did have the ball either.
- Adriano Correia
- S. Kéita
Was expected to miss out through flu but came on with just over half an hour left. Immediately involved as he clipped an effort over Riesgo but it went just wide after a great one-two with Alves. Looked to be obstructed in the area as he ran through the Osasuna defence after that, but was not to be denied as he scored a finbe header a neat fourth to make it a memorable start to 2012.
Came on for Cuenca with just over 15 minutes left and set up a second for Messi with a neat cross soon afterwards, but Riesgo somehow saved from the Argentine.
- Miguel Flaño
Came on for the last 20 minutes to provide more defensive solidity, but couldn't stop Messi from running riot.
Almost scored with a lovely curled left-footed effort late on after coming on as a substitute, but his shot went just wide of Pinto's far post.
Came on late but saw little of the ball as Barca kept attacking.
