Barcelona 1-1 Real Mallorca: Lionel Messi strike cancelled out as champions lose further ground on leaders Valencia

Emilio Nsue's equaliser earns a point for the visitors...

Barcelona have squandered the chance to close the gap on Valencia at the top of La Liga following a frustrating draw against Mallorca.

The hosts took the lead through Lionel Messi but a goal from Emilio Nsue minutes before the half-time whistle earned Michael Laudrup’s side a point.

Barcelona imposed themselves from the very beginning of the match as Pedro, Bojan and Gerard Pique all had chances early on in the first half. So dominant were the home side that Mallorca were lucky to even get the ball out of their own half, something typified by the fact that Barca had 90% possession in the first 15 minutes.

Even though Pep Guardiola’s created a host of chances, none were clear cut until Messi gave them the lead after twenty minutes. Dani Alves came surging forward on the right before giving the ball to Pedro who flicked a pass through two defenders for Messi to strike.

The Argentine had a penalty shout turned down shortly after and Pique also went close after the centre-back headed just over from a corner.

It wasn't until just before the break that Victor Valdes had to make a save as Fernando Cavenaghi created a good chance for Gonzalo Castro. But this proved to be only a warning as Mallorca equalised a minute later from Emilio Nsue who headed in from a corner completely against the run of play.

The second half started much like the first as the home team dominated possession and territory, but were unable to find that killer pass to unlock the Mallorca defence.

Messi was once more tormenting Mallorca in tandem with Dani Alves, whose marauding runs were causing havoc. But as the half wore on the visitors were beginning to apply some pressure to the Barcelona goal.

Pierre Webo went close when he found Valdes off his line but the keeper managed to scamper back and put the ball out for a corner, from which Nsue went close with a header.

With some more slick passing football Barca created a great chance for Bojan but the youngster hit the post after being put clean through on goal.

The result sees Barcelona remain in third place two points behind Villarreal and three behind leaders Valencia, but they could slip to fourth if Real Madrid win tonight, while Mallorca move ahead of Athletic Bilbao into ninth place.
