Simeone's attention will now turn to the trip to AC Milan in midweek, and after a terrible week of results, this win will give them a huge boost. Barcelona play later today, so they could go back above Los Rojiblancos, but for now Atletico sit atop of the Primera Liga. I'm Tom Maston, and thanks for joining me.
Manucho fires wide in the final seconds as the referee blows the final whistle. Atletico Madrid go back to the top of La Liga, and even if it is only temporary, the confidence taken from this win will only help them going forward.
90' + 1'
Into two minutes of stoppage time as Valladolid try to push forward and find a goal, but Courtois is there to calm everything down as Manucho wins a header at the back post.
Rossi swings in another cross, but the excellent Alderweireld wins the header under pressure from Manucho. Miranda may struggle to get back into this side for the time being.
The game is becoming a little tempestuous in the closing stages, with Valladolid beginning to grow frustrated with how this match has gone for them. They have had plenty of possession but failed to register a shot on target as yet.
Yellow CardStefan Mitrović
Appeals for a penalty from the home fans as Costa twists and turns on the left before crossing, and Valiente seems to handle the ball, but the referee waves away the shouts from the Atletico players.
This match is winding down now, though Atletico may well look for one more goal just to help with their goal difference. They have been superior in front of goal today.
Yellow CardCarlos Peña
Yellow CardVíctor Pérez
From that clearance, Godin breaks free at the other end of the field, but he fails to show any composure as he drags his effort wide of Marino's left-hand post.
Valladolid have a rare corner but they cannot threaten and Atletico's clean sheet remains intact.
Changes for either side as Sosa replaces Koke for the hosts while Manucho is on foe Guerra up front for Valladolid.
Valladolid look bereft of ideas now, with this game pretty much gone. Atletico have done a thoroughly professional job this afternoon.
A return to action for Villa as he replaces Turan for the final 15 minutes. Simeone possibly looking towards Milan in midweek as he rests some key players.
GOAL!!! Three goals and surely now three points for Atletico. Godin is the man to find the net as he nods home Diego's corner. Marino had no chance and that will surely see the hosts back to the top of La Liga.
A second change for the visitors as Larsson is replaced by Valdet Rama.
Juanfran to the rescue at the other end as Larsson finds himself in space around 12 yards from goal, but the full-back can get across to challenge after the Valladolid man miscontrols.
The hosts should have put this to bed. Turan turns inside his man on the right before squaring for Koke on the edge of the six-yard box. The midfielder could shoot, but instead he looks to backheel towards Suarez, but the visitors can clear.
Plenty of patient build-up play from Atletico, with Valladolid now struggling to get back onto the ball. There chance may have gone now, though there are still over 20 minutes to go.
OFF THE CROSSBAR! Atletico's set-pieces have caused plenty of problems this afternoon, and Suarez is the man to cause confusion in the box this time as he wins a header at the near post, only for his effort to come back off the bar.
Diego finally makes his way onto the field, with goalscorer Garcia the man to make way.
A bit of a problem here for the referee, as it seems one of the electronic appliances about his person is replaced by one of his assistants. Meanwhile Diego is being readied on the sidelines.
More opportunities for Valladolid as Rossi swings over a corner that finds the unmarked Valiente at the back post, but his volley is a poor one and does not trouble Courtois.
Valladolid are certainly looking to get back into the match, and have shown plenty of endeavour in getting the ball forward. Rossi looks to be the key man as they search for a goal to give them a lifeline.
More excellent play from Rossi as he swings a cross into the middle, but Guerra and Larsson get in each other's way and the chance is gone. Atletico are able to break, and only a block from Valiente denies Costa from finding Godin in acres of space.
Real chance for Valladolid as Rossi chips a ball over the top of the Atletico defence, and Guerra is there to meet it on the volley, only to get his angles wrong and fire wide. Better from the visitors.
SAVED! The first chance of the half falls to Atletico and Godin, who gets up highest to meet Gabi's deep corner from the left, but Marino does well to parry the defender's header.
Very little in terms of goalmouth action in the early stages of the second half. Certainly nowhere near as frantic as the opening minutes of the match where Atletico found the net twice in quick succession.
Osorio has gone straight up front for the visitors alongside Guerra, who was left fairly isolated in the first half. The visitors have again had much of the possession early in the second period, but Atletico look comfortable in defence.
Valladolid have made a change at the break, with Omar being replaced by Osorio, and we are back underway...
The players are making their way back onto the field as we prepare for the second period.
Simeone will certainly want his side to add to their tally, as this match is certainly there for the taking, and it would be surprise if they didn't win by a bigger margin. I'll be back in ten minutes for the second half.
No stoppage time at the end of the first half, and as it stands Atletico will go back to the top of La Liga table. Goals from Garcia and Costa separate the two teams, and though Valladolid are still in it, they must show more in the final third.
The match is beginning to wind down as we approach half-time. Atletico will be happy enough despite not adding to their early goals.
Atletico threaten as the ball comes across from the right, and after Insua's effort is blocked, Garcia skews an effort harmlessly wide.
Gabi has done a lot of defensive work today, and the midfielder is there again to make sure yet another Valladolid move breaks down on the edge of the area. The visitors are still in this but have failed to test Courtois.
Costa finally has some space to run into, and he looks to be moving in on goal, but Valiente does well to get across and make an excellent challenge inside the Valladolid box.
Turan's passing hasn't been at its best today, and he again fails to fins his man as he is given all the time in the world to find Costa, but the striker cannot catch the overhit ball and Marino is out to collect. A bit of frustration starting to grow within the hosts' line-up.
Half-chance for the hosts as Garcia brings the ball forward with Costa in support, but the midfielder gets the ball caught up under his feet and Pena can get back to clear.
Valladolid are letting themselves down at present, with both Guerra and Rukavina miscontrolling when in promising positions. All too easy for Simeone's side.
Rubio this time looks for the killer pass on the edge of the Atletico area, but Courtois can come across to collect. The goalkeeper has been untroubled on his return to the side.
The hosts go close to adding to their lead as Gabi swings in a free-kick from the left that Suarez meets with his head, but his effort is too high to trouble Marino.
The game has certainly calmed down since the frantic opening, with Atletico happy to allow the visitors plenty of the ball.
Costa comes to life on the left, combining with Koke before breaking into the area. The striker loses possession, but Gabi is able to get a shot way from the edge of the box that dribbles wide of the post.
Valladolid are certainly having more of the play at present, with Costa being resigned to the role of a mere spectator over the past five minutes. Can the visitors pull one back while they're slightly on top?
Suarez is being worked slightly harder in the holding role within the Atletico midfield, but Valladolid are struggling to find away around him. Little in the way of creativity from the visitors.
Valladolid are certainly looking to grow into this match, and Larsson tries to get to the byline on the right-hand side, but Godin is across to see the ball out of play.
Atletico look to work another training ground free-kick routine, but Turan cannot find a team-mate with his cross and Valladolid clear their lines.
A first show of positive intention from Valladolid as Pena is given space to pick a man out from the left-hand side. His cross is a weak one, though, and Alderweireld can clear with ease.
Juanfran is unsurprisingly looking to get forward as much as possible, and he finds himself in a decent position after Alderweireld sets him free, but Omar gets back to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick.
Turan shows a turn of pace for the first time as he gets to the byline on the right-hand side, but he cannot find a red and white shirt in the middle with his low cross.
After those two early goals, Atletico now seem happy just to keep the ball in midfield and look to play patiently. However, goal difference could be key at the end of the season, so no doubt Simeone will be keen for his side to add to their tally this afternoon.
Finally a short period of possession for Valladolid, with Rossi and Omar involved, but Pena gives the ball away as he allows the ball to trickle out of play on the left-hand side.
Almost a second for Costa as the ball finds him waiting at the back post, but as the ball bobbles in front of him he can only fire over the bar. Valladolid look shellshocked.
Valladolid have barely made it into the Atletico half as yet, with Simeone's side looking in rampant mood. They are not about to let the last three matches affect them.
GOAL!!! Atletico in dreamland! Costa is the man on the scoresheet this time, latching onto a through ball from Garcia, and after Marino gets himself into all sorts of bother, the striker can finish with some ease.
GOAL!!! Perfect start for Atletico, and what a goal this is from Garcia. After Costa wins a free-kick on the edge of the area, Gabi lays the ball into the midfielder's path, and he sweeps home from 20 yards.
Atletico kick-off and we are underway...
Prior to getting underway, the Atletico players are posing for a team picture alongside their own children. A nice touch ahead of what has become a huge match.
The stadium is far from full in the Spanish capital, with Valladolid not really catching the same imagination as perhaps other sides do in La Liga. The players are making their way out onto the field as we await kick-off.
Just over five minutes until kick-off now in Madrid, and there is certainly an air of tension around Estadio Vicente Calderon. Another defeat will not be tolerated by supporters who have come to expect more from their side in the past couple of seasons.
It is testament to Atletico that they have suffered such a nightmare week and remain level on points at the top of La Liga table, though it could be argued a further slip-up here could prove terminal in their pursuit of the Primera Liga title. Barcelona seem back on track while Real Madrid are going through their best period of the season.
So Atletico make six changes from the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid, with Courtois, Juanfran, Godin, Gabi, Turan and Costa all returning to the starting line-up. Alderweireld is preferred to Miranda at the heart of the defence, with David Villa back on the bench after three weeks out with injury.
Valladolid: Marino; Rukavina, Valiente, Mitrovic, Pena; Rubio, Rossi; Larsson, Perez, Ramos; Guerra.
Atletico: Courtois; Juanfran, Alderweireld, Godin, Insua; Suarez, Gabi; Koke, Garcia, Turan; Costa.
Fans are slowly making their way into Estadio Vicente Calderon, and the two teams have been announced ahead of kick-off...
Valladolid themselves are also desperate for a win as they sit three points behind Granada and inside the relegation places. Though a victory today would seem unlikely, Juan Ignacio Martinez will be aware that Atletico are arguably at their most vulnerable at present.
Last week's reverse at the hands of Almeria was only Atletico's second league defeat of the campaign, but with Copa del Rey defeats to city rivals Real Madrid also hitting the confidence of Simeone's side, they are desperate for victory this afternoon. Anything other than defeat would see them go back to the top of La Liga table, though a victory is key if they are to keep up the pressure on Real and Barcelona.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of Atletico Madrid's Primera Liga encounter against struggling Real Valladolid. Diego Simeone's side are going through their toughest period of the season, having lost on their last three outings, but a win today would see them return to the top of the table in Spain. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you through all the action.
