Full time at Vicente Calderon. The title race in the Spanish Primera Dvision has just been blown open once again as Atletico Madrid run out massive 4-0 winners over rivals, Real Madrid. Tiago and Saul Niguez scored two in the first half and no comeback came from Los Blancos in the second period, which gave Diego Simeone's outfit an incentive to go on and score two more through Griezmann and Mandzukic. A desperately inept performance from Real Madrid but you have to hand it to Atletico! I'm Martin Macdonald, thanks for joining us for this sensational match! See you next time!
90' + 1'
Just two minutes of added time from the referee here and Real Madrid will be put out of their misery soon enough.
GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID!!! What a game this is turning into for Los Colchoneros! Tiago slides a pass down the right wing and Torres collects before whipping a brilliant cross into the box. Mandzukic loses his marker before bulleting a header into the corner! FOUR-NIL!
Indeed, the team who looks the more likely to score at the moment is Atletico as they look to inflict further damage on their city rivals. Absolutely no sign of a consolation from the visitors.
The most striking thing about this second half has been Madrid's complete impotency in the final third. Atletico have defended solidly, but they have not come on the end of any particularly incisive Los Blancos attacks.
Yellow CardJesé Rodríguez
Jese collects the ball in a similar position to Ronaldo and does a little better than his predecessor as he makes his way into the penalty area. Miranda ends up seeing possession out for a goal kick and the Madrid man petulantly throws his opposition to the floor, earning a yellow in the process.
Yellow CardMario Mandzukic
Ronaldo receives the ball to feet near the left touchline and is met with a chorus of boos from the Vicente Calderon faithful, who cheer even harded as the Portuguese's pass inside to Jese is intercepted by the Atletico midfield.
Kroos swings a corner kick into the box and it is cleared to around 25 yards out. Illarramendi meets it and smashes a half-volley towards goal that flies just over the bar. It just took a deflection on its way through though and Los Blancos get another corner kick opportunity.
Torres' first action of the match is to slide a lovely pass down the left channel for Arda. The Turk teases Carvajal with a few stepovers before lifting a cross to the front post, but on this occasion Casillas takes the pressure off his defence with a catch out of the air.
Last change of the match now and it sees Antoine Griezmann come off for Fernando Torres, who was the scourge of Real Madrid in the recent Copa del Rey matches. Can El Nino grab another goal against his side's great rivals in the 15 minutes he has been awarded?
Real Madrid, of course, had a very hard-fought match against Sevilla on Wednesday whereas Atletico did not have a match midweek, and it has definitely showed here today. Los Blancos can't use that as an excuse though, as the have been out-thought as well as out-fought.
In the final throw of the dice from Ancelotti, the Italian coach introduces Javier Hernandez in place of the desperately ineffectual Benzema. The Mexican will struggle to make much of an impact himself if the quality of Madrid's play continues though.
In the build up to that Griezmann goal, Saul Niguez actually landed awkwardly on his knee and it looks like he'll be coming off. The Los Colchoneros youngster actually came on for Koke in the first half, but he is being replaced by Raul Garcia now.
Carlo Ancelotti reacts quickly to going further behind and introduces Asier Illarramendi in place of Isco, who has been largely ineffective in the final third for Madrid, but like the rest of his fellow attackers!
GOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID!!! THAT'S THREE FOR THE HOSTS! Arda cuts in from the right wing totally unopposed and dinks a cross to the back post for Saul. The substitute nods a perfect cut back across goal and Griezmann is on hand to smash home from close range! THREE-NIL!
The lack of effect on this match from Ronaldo, Bale, and Benzema has been pretty startling. If this level of performance keeps up from that trio then it can't be long before Ancelotti thinks about changing things. Javier Hernandez the most likely candidate to come on for the bench.
A real chance passed up by Mandzukic! The Croatian stands at the back post and looks poised to head home, but just gets distracted by the challenge of Carvajal at the last minute and ends up sending his header into the ground, which allows Casillas to collect!
GRIEZMANN! The Frenchman almost scores two in two minutes and in his second attempt he latches on to a cross into the box before pulling off a superb overhead kick! It goes over the bar but it was spectacularly unlucky! May even have been better than Saul's in the first half if it went in!
SAVE BY CASILLAS! Griezmann gets in behind the Madrid defence and fires a wicked right-footed strike at goal! It moves all over the place but the Madrid keeper makes a solid save, which he should have done for the opening goal!
Jese collects the ball on the edge of the box and looks to twist and turn his way into the area. The substitute receives a small bump from Miranda and goes down but the referee is nowhere close to awarding a penalty for that one, and the play continues with Atletico possession in midfield.
The whole game is at the risk of boiling over currently as Mandzukic goes down under the challenge of Bale and then the Welshman aims to get the ball back by hacking at the feet of the Croatian as he is on the floor. In the end the duo make up with a handshake but there is still tension in the air.
Yellow CardDiego Godín
A couple of yellow cards for either side here as Nacho earns one for coming through the back of Mandzukic in an aerial challenge and then Godin goes into the book for his protests. The latter a very very silly reason to receive a booking. The ref just needs to calm the game down a bit at the moment.
Yellow CardRaúl García
Carvajal and Ronaldo link up well down the right wing and the former eventually swings a cross to the front post. Bale fancies getting on the end of it to get a header away, but Moya bravely comes out to clear out of the box, which earns the hosts a free kick.
Yellow CardArda Turan
The referee risks the wrath of the Atletico crowd here as he blows for a foul on Nacho after Mandzukic clearly gets the ball with a wonderful tackle just in front of the home dugout. Not a good decision from the official there!
We've got a half-time substitution to report for you and it sees Khedira come off to be replaced by Jese Rodriguez in what is a necessary attacking change from Carlo Ancelotti. The German did pull up just before the break though, so it may have been a forced switch.
We are back under way in the Vicente Calderon!
Half time at Vicente Calderon. It has near enough been a perfect opening 45 minutes from Atletico Madrid as they go into the break with a relatively healthy 2-0 lead over Real Madrid in this Spanish Primera Division clash. Tiago and Saul Niguez, who came on for the injured Koke, were the scorers in a first half which saw Los Blancos barely land a blow on their rivals. Will we see a response from Ancelotti's men after the break?
The first Atletico booking comes and, rather predictably, it goes to Gabi as the captain of the home side goes in for an aerial challenge with Coentrao with his elbow up. Probably a deserved yellow card and he'll need to watch himself for the rest of the game.
Simeone's outfit are one of the best teams in the world when it comes to seeing out victories with a relatively narrow advantage, so you get the feeling that a Madrid goal before the break may be necessary if Los Blancos are going to have a chance of claiming an unlikely three points.
Moya is called into some kind of action for the first time in the match as Carvajal whips a dangerous cross to the back post. The Atletico keeper commandingly comes off his line and takes out three or four players with his punched clearance!
In a rare appearance on the ball, Bale pops up down the right wing and gets the better of Siqueira before dashing inside. However, the final product is not good enough as his cross with the outside of his left foot near enough goes out for a throw in on the far side.
Atletico may be two goals up against their bitter rivals at the moment, but they certainly have the right to feel aggrieved that they are not winning by a bigger margin. Griezmann was previously wrongly judged as offside when he chipped the keeper and the referee failed to award a penalty for a Khedira handball!
That looks a definite penalty for Atletico Madrid! Godin takes the ball down with a lovely touch at the back post and smashes a strike at goal which appears to bounce off the hand of Khedira! The German clutches his face and the referee buys it as he fails to point to the spot!
Madrid have just started to show a little more going forward in the last five minutes or so. Isco has managed to find a little more space, but rather uncharacteristically for the visitors, their passing has not been on point. A lot of diagonals going astray.
We've got our first booking of the match here and it is about the most deserved one you'll ever see as Kroos halts an Atletico counterattack by hacking down Griezmann near the halfway line. There was some lovely movement in the build-up by the Frenchman, who earns himself a free kick.
Yellow CardToni Kroos
Isco, whilst under massive pressure from Gabi, manages to slide the ball into the feet of Bale before looking for the return pass from the Welshman. It comes, but the Atletico captain is on hand to rob possession back for Simeone's men. Madrid just are not being allowed any time on the ball whatsoever!
Coentrao is having an absolutely torrid time at left-back due to the movement and creativity of Arda Turan. To be fair to the Portuguese, he is not the only Real Madrid player who has had a nightmare so far! Miguel Moya has been totally untested in between the sticks for the home side!
Tiago receives the ball to feet in midfield and clips a delightful pass over the top of the defence for Griezmann, who runs through and chips the keeper before being flagged as offside. That looked very, very tight! Carvajal may have been playing him on at right-back!
Ronaldo eventually sees some possession near the touchline and looks to get beyond Arda, but eventually runs the ball out of play. Probably was a foul on the Madrid man from the Turk, but the Atletico crowd show no sympathy to the Ballon d'Or winner, who is looking increasingly frustrated at proceedings.
Madrid are sinking without a trace in this opening 20 minutes. You'll have noticed that we haven't once mentioned Bale, Benzema, or Ronaldo, and that is because the attacking trio of the hosts have barely saw any possession!
GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLL FOR ATLETICO!!! The hosts double their lead!! Siqueira goes on a marauding run into the box and hits the byline before chipping a cross to the front post, and the newly introduced Saul Niguez sends the ball home with a sensational bicycle kick! Two-nil! What a start for Los Colchoneros!
What is Casillas playing at here?! The Real Madrid captain looks completely shook up between the sticks now as he, for some reason, opts to punch the ball away from under his bar with absolutely nobody near him! Atletico will be looking to take advantage of his uncertainty that's for sure!
GOOOOAAALLL! GOOOOALLL!! GOOOAAALLL FOR ATLETICO!!! A fantastic cross is whipped into the box from Juanfran and Mandzukic eventually collects before teeing up Tiago, who squeezes a shot under Casillas from the edge of the box! Awful mistake from the Madrid man! One-nil!
Well, not the start that Diego Simeone would have wanted. Koke is almost irreplaceable in the middle of the park due to his pressing and combative abilities, but Saul Niguez should provide some creative spark in there. Not a bad replacement by any means.
Koke does indeed trot off the field and he'll be replaced by Saul Niguez. Godin, meanwhile, gets patched up and looks okay to continue at centre back.
A real blow to Atletico now as Koke wont be able to continue after going down clutching his hamstring off the ball, and to make things potentially worse, Godin is receiving treatment after a nasty clash of heads with Khedira. Physios working hard here!
Snap shot from Arda! Gabi whips a corner kick into the box and the ball falls kindly for the Turk who flashes a central strike at goal, but Casillas gets his body behind it to make the relatively comfortable save. The home side have improved greatly in the last five minutes and look the most likely team to open the scoring here!
Atletico Madrid are demanding a penalty! Arda collects the ball down the right-hand side and gets beyond Coentrao before going down under the recovering tackle of the full-back! Didn't look too much in it, and the ref shares this view as he waves play on! No boot thrown at the officials this time thankfully!
Madrid have enjoyed the better of the possession in these early stages but both sides not going out all guns blazing after the opening whistle. Expect yet another very close encounter between these sides today!
The Madrid derby is under way!
The players have made their way to the pitch at Vicente Calderon and we are almost ready for kick off!
For Real Madrid, Carvajal, Coentrao, Nacho, and Ronaldo come in for Sergio Ramos, Arbeloa, Marcelo, and James.
Four changes a piece to either side from their previous matches. For Atletico, Juanfran, Miranda, Gabi, and Arda Turan come in for Gimenez, Jesus Gamez, Saul and Raul Garcia.
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Casillas; Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Coentrao; Khedira, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo.
Atletico (4-4-2): Moya; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Siqueira; Tiago, Gabi, Arda, Koke; Griezmann, Mandzukic.
That match for Ancelotti's outfit during the week was a game in hand over Barcelona and Atletico, which means that the home side today will be fresher than their rivals. Los Colchoneros' last match saw them impressively win 3-1 against Eibar despite terrible pitch conditions, with a Mario Mandzukic double and an early Antoine Griezmann goal sealing the victory.
Real Madrid will be without James Rodriguez for the match today and indeed a large portion of the remainder of the season after picking up a metatarsal injury in the narrow 2-1 win over Sevilla midweek. However, the visitors do welcome back star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has served his two-match suspension.
Atletico Madrid have gained slight revenge on Los Blancos for the Champions League final defeat last May. Diego Simeone's men overcame Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup at the start of the season, defeated them 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu thanks to goals from Tiago and Arda Turan, and just recently knocked them out of the Copa del Rey, with the returning Fernando Torres proving to be the hero of that particular tie.
Carlo Ancelotti's outfit are aiming to extend their lead at the top of La Liga with a victory over their rivals today, but in order to do so they must break a poor run which haw saw them fail to beat Los Colchoneros in each of the last five meeting between the clubs this season.
I'm Martin Macdonald, and I'll be taking you through the action!
