Atlético Madrid win Aggregate 2 - 1
Thank you very much for joining me this evening to witness Atletico Madrid win the Super Cup at the expense of their arch rivals, Real Madrid. My name is Tom Webber, and it was an absolute pleasure to guide you through the action.
FULL TIME - Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (Agg 2-1): Mandzukic's second-minute strike gives the Rojiblancos are hard-fought victory over their arch rivals. It is they who will lift the Super Cup after a vintage performance from Simeone's men, who looked up for this game from the first moment.
90' + 5'
THERE IS THE FINAL WHISTLE! ATLETI ARE SUPER CUP CHAMPIONS!
90' + 4'
Yellow CardCristiano Ronaldo
90' + 4'
Madrid win a corner and everyone bar Casillas gets into the box for it. Cristiano appears to shove Godin and so Atleti have a free kick. Will that be it?
90' + 3'
Carvajal whips in a brilliant cross from the right and Ramos makes a late run to meet it in the middle. However, he fails to connect and a great opportunity goes begging.
90' + 1'
90' + 1'
RED CARD FOR MODRIC! The Croatian is late in a challenge and picks up his second booking of the night and is therefore sent for an early bath. Los Blancos will complete the remaining few minutes with 10 men, and they still need a goal.
90' + 1'
There are going to be four minutes of added time!
Raul Garcia, who has performed excellently this evening, has been replaced by Saul for the closing minutes.
Yellow CardSergio Ramos
There is Sergio Ramos' inevitable yellow card! The centre-back bodychecks Raul Garcia as he looks to cut inside from the left. Time is running out for los Blancos.
Rodriguez receives the ball in space and bears down on the area. He checks back in order to create room for a shot but he has Varane in his way when he pulls the trigger.
Bale opens up his stride and looks to surge down the right flank and into space behind the defence. Godin reads his run, though, and races across to get between the Welshman and the ball to end the danger. Atleti dropping deeper and deeper here.
Gabi attempts to knock the ball past Ramos on his way into the box but ends up finding the defender's legs. He then drops to ground once there is contact but has to return to his feet quickly as play continues.
Simeone is now just eight minutes away from becoming only the second ever coach to lead Atleti to glory in the Spanish Super Cup. Luis Aragones is the only over person to do so, masterminding the only previous title win in 1985.
Carvajal cuts in from the right and snds an inswinging cross into the box. It is inches away from an unmarked Bale who stretches out a leg but is unable to connect with the delivery. It then bounces up into the arms of Moya, but he could have been really tested there.
Another booking now as Isco is the latest to go into the book. That is the seventh yellow card of the evening.
Real have looked less dominant in terms of possession this half with Atleti the side to have threatened the opposing goal more. As it stands a second Rojiblanco goal actually looks more likely than Ancelotti's men equalising.
Atleti win the ball and look to pounce yet again. Mandzukic is played through on goal but he has Carvajal on his tail. The right-back catches up to him and gives him a nudge in the back which sends the towering striker tumbling. He instantly feels there should be a free kick but the referee somehow judges that there was no foul. Very lenient.
Yellow CardRaúl García
It proves to be Griezmann's final involvement in the fixture as Raul Jimenez comes on to replace him.
GRIEZMANN! He should do better! Ramos is caught in possession and the Rojiblancos instantly pounce. The ball is slipped into Griezmann just inside the box but he drags his shot harmlessly wide of the target.
KOKE! What a brilliant strike from the Atleti man! He catches the ball superbly from just outside the area but there is just too much elevation on it for the effort to bring a save from Casillas. He was worried, though!
Cristiano has a chance to shoot with a free kick from 25 yards out but he lashes it straight into the wall. He claims there was a handball but the referee is unmoved. That was certainly just a hopeful plea from the Portuguese.
Yellow CardAntoine Griezmann
STAT: Cristiano has scored four goals in his last four derby appearances against Atletico Madrid. Ancelotti will be hoping he maintains that ratio tonight!
That is it for James this evening. The Colombian is replaced by Isco for the remaining 25 minutes, with Ancelotti perhaps hoping for some fresh ideas in the final third.
Bale does well to jink between to Rojiblanco shirts but as he attempts to spin his way into the box he is sent to ground. The referee thinks about it but decides the challenge was clean and allows play to carry on.
CRISTIANO! A swift break from the visitors ends with Cristiano receiving the ball from Benzema 30 yards from goal. He rolls it out of his feet and fires a stinging shot towards the target, but it is aimed straight at Moya who holds it at the first time of asking.
Cristiano receives a long clearance from Casillas and beats Miranda down towards the byline. The cross is good but Godin is positioned well on the near post and manages to divert it behind the goal for a corner.
Gabi's corner is flicked on at the near post by Tiago and the ball loops up high into the air. Mandzukic attempts to challenge for seconds but he is blocked off and Casillas is able to punch the threat clear.
JUST WIDE!! Raul Garcia is the dangerman again, striking a lovely shot from Juanfran's pass. If anything he puts too much whip on it which sees the ball curl away from goal and the despairing Casillas.
Great challenge from Griezmann! The former Real Sociedad man chases back to aid his side defensively and sneaks in behind Cristiano and steals the ball from him, showing good strength in the process.
The strong challenges continue to fly in on both sides in what remains a fiery affair. Both teams feel hard done by on the awarding of every free kick it seems!
Carvajal makes an important challenge inside the box to stop Atleti from getting a shot away on goal after some great play from Koke. The visitors look to counterattack but the ball out wide to Bale is poor and momentum in the break slows to a halt.
Yellow CardXabi Alonso
Well a second goal for Atleti really would have changed the complexion of this tie, with Real then needing two goals! For the time being it remains the same and the visitors should heed that as a warning and look to get a goal themselves as soon as possible.
OFF THE BAR AND... IT STAYS OUT! A free kick is sent in from deep towards the near post and Raul Garcia flicks it on. His effort hits the bar and bounces down on the wrong side of the line for a goal to be given! Casillas stays alert and palms away the loose ball as Mandzukic chases in to finish up the rebound!
Yellow CardLuka Modric
Real move the ball out to the right quickly, finding Carvajal with plenty of space from which to cross. His delivery is poor and Godin manages to head away the danger before a white shirt can make a run to attack it.
We are back underway in Madrid!
The teams are back out for the second half, and it looks as though Cristiano is going to be introduced with Kroos making way.
Real have seen plenty of the ball and have worked a few shooting opportunities, with Bale seeing the two best ones but being unable to best Moya. There are still another 45 minutes to play, though, so be sure to join me for the second half shortly.
HALF TIME - Atleti 1-0 Real Madrid (Agg 2-1): Mandzukic's early goal means los Colchoneros have one hand on the Super Cup! It has been an Atleti display typical of one of Diego Simeone's side, though the Argentine has been sent to the stands for misconduct in the first half. Just one goal for the visitors would set up extra time, though, so this game is by no means over.
45' + 1'
James has the last effort of the half with an ambitious effort after collecting the ball outside the box. He fails to guide it inside the post and a few moments later the referee blows his whistle to signal for half time.
RAUL GARCIA AGAIN! The resultant corner is whipped into the box and the Atleti man evades the slack marking of Coentrao to connect with it. From six yards out, though, he contrives to angle his header over the top. He ought to have done bettere there!
RAUL GARCIA!! WHAT AN EFFORT! The midfielder releases an absolute missile from 30 yards out which looks to be searing towards the top corner. Casillas is worried and dives to his left to palm the attempt behind for a corner. Some goal that would have been.
Coentrao tries to slip a pass to James through the legs of Juanfran but he misjudges it. The hosts mop up the loose ball and begin moving it down the field, eventually drawing a foul as they shield possession from the opposition.
We are closing in on half time now and Atleti still hold the lead, both on the night and on aggregate. They have shown plenty of grit and look exceptionally determined not to allow their rivals a chance to completely settle. The threat of the break will always be on their mind.
BALE GOES CLOSE! James is picked out in space 25 yards from goal and his first touch enables him to turn on goal and see his options. He slides a pass into Bale who shimmies past Godin with his first touch but drags his effort from the top of the box wide of the bottom corner!
Coentrao loses possession on the left and the hosts instantly look to break. After a couple of passes the ball is sent to Mandzukic but the striker is unable to beat Varane in a foot race and the Madrid defender sends it back to Casillas to relieve the pressure.
JUST WIDE! Modric dinks the ball into the centre and finds James close to the penalty spot. The Colombian is facing away from goal so has to crane his neck and head the ball on the turn, and he is therefore unable to steer it on Moya's goal.
Raul Garcia nibbles away at Benzema's ankles but eventually goes too far without winning the ball and he concedes a free kick. Real take it quickly so as to not allow Atleti the chance to re-organise defensively.
James delivers the ball but it is Raul Garcia who gets his head on it and clears the danger. A follow-up shot quickly comes in but Mandzukic is in position to deflect it behind the post. The towering striker then shows his ability in defence again to win the subsequent corner at the near post.
Bale is felled wide on the right as he knocks the ball past Godin and is wiped out by the Uruguayan. It was under the nose of the assistant referee and a free kick is awarded. This is a good opportunity for the visitors.
Los Colchoneros still remain difficult to break down, however. If they can block up that gap without exposing themselves anywhere they could give the visitors a truly torrid night.
Madrid are imposing themselves on possession and finding gaps between Siqueira and Godin in the defence. Atleti will need to close that up as they cannot afford los Blancos space in such dangerous areas. Particularly with the array of talent in their line-up.
Replays show Simeone talking to the official and giving him a tap on the back of the head, clearly crossing a line. He was outside of his technical area too. Will that have any sort of effect on the players, though? They still have the imposing figure of German Burgos on the sidelines.
DIEGO SIMEONE IS SENT OFF! The Atleti boss loses his cool on the sidelines and after a confrontation with the officials he is sent up to the stands for the remainder of the game!
GOOD SAVE MOYA!! Los Blancos finally work their way through the defence and they do it twice in quick succession! First Tiago has to clear a cutback which caught Moya out but moments the keeper makes a brilliant stop, denying Bale's placed effort after a give-and-go with Carvajal.
Juanfran slides in on Coentrao, doesn't take the ball and to add to his woes he catches a knee to the face and is forced off the field for some treatment to a bleeding wound.
Mandzukic is winning every header in that final third at the moment. Not only does he win them, he often has the foresight to place the ball well for a team-mate. He knocks it down on the edge of the box again but this time none of his team-mate's can capitalise.
There is a coming together between Mandzukic and Ramos as the striker backs into the Real defender, forcing him to climb over him in an attempt to win the header. The referee awards a free kick to the hosts but Ramos stays down in order to receive some treatment after falling awkwardly. He should be fine to continue, though.
OVER THE TOP! The corner is sent into the middle but headed out of the are by the Atleti defence. It falls to Modric 25 yards from goal and he unleashes a beautiful volley but he is unable to control it well enough to guide it on target.
Koke leaves a late foot in on Carvajal and the referee awards a free kick to the visitors wide on the right flank. James flights it in to the back post but nothing is made of it. The ball ends up out wide with Alonso and his cross is blocked off so Real win a corner.
Mandzukic is really putting himself about early on and he manages to cushion a long ball down for Griezmann 25 yards from goal. The Frenchman releases a first-time strike but his connection is not clean and the effort bobbles wide of the target.
Ancelotti's side are continuing to build upon their possession but Atleti won't be too worried about that. They will be comfortable soaking up the pressure and threatening their opposition with quick attacks on the break.
STAT: Casillas has not lost any of the 28 derbies in which he has started against Atletico Madrid. There have been 21 victories and seven draws, but tonight he finds himself behind after 12 minutes.
Real knock it about well in the middle with Alonso eventually driving a pass out to Bale on the right. The Welshman controls it well and sends a cross into the centre with the outside of his left boot. There is no white shirt to attack it and Moya is left to claim comfortably.
The visitors finally manage to enjoy a spell in possession outside of their own half, and they take the opportunity to slow the tempo. Part of that may be down to the organisation of los Colchoneros, though, who are quickly back into possession and defending in two solid banks of four.
Koke stumbles under a challenge from Varane inside the area and the crowd are instantly up in arms. The referee sees nothing wrong with the tackle and allows play to continue. Atleti manage to keep it in their possession but are unable to work the ball back into the box.
Well, what a start! Simeone couldn't have hoped for anything better, but it doesn't change anything for the opposition. Los Blancos know they still need a goal, and the opener does not change that.
GOOOOOOL!! ATLETI LEAD! A direct goal from the hosts, as Moya's long clearance is headed back towards his own goal by Varane with Mandzukic challenging. The Croatian spins and races into the area, latching onto Raul Garcia's flick-on and lashing a low shot into the bottom corner!
Mandzukic almost finds himself one-on-one with Casillas within a few seconds! A ball down the channel is controlled by the Croatian but he struggles to get it out from under his feet and it offers Varane the chance to race back in and dispossess him with a brilliant sliding tackle.
We are underway in Madrid!
The teams are making their way out onto the pitch at the Vicente Calderon now. The second leg of the Super Cup will kick off in just a few minutes.
We are just under 10 minutes away from kick off so the tension is beginning to rise. Carlo Ancelotti will be bidding to become the first Italian to win the Spanish Super Cup tonight. Claudio Ranieri has come closest, but his Valencia side lost the 2004 edition of the tournament to Real Zaragoza.
Diego Simeone’s side played a defensive brand of football in the first leg and ultimately it worked as they snatched a late 1-1 draw. Atleti will feel more comfortable playing that game in front of their home fans tonight, though, so it could be a difficult task for Real Madrid to break them down. However, there is plenty of creativity, ingenuity and finishing talent in the Blancos' line-up.
Real Madrid substitutes: Navas, Arbeloa, Pepe, Marcelo, Illarramendi, Isco, Cristiano.
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Casillas; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Coentrao; Modric, Alonso, Kroos; Bale, Benzema, James.
Atleti substitutes: Oblak, Ansaldi, Gimenez, Suarez, Rodriguez, Saul, Jimenez.
Atleti (4-4-2): Moya; Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Siqueira; Raul Garcia, Gabi, Tiago, Koke; Griezmann, Mandzukic.
REAL MADRID TEAM NEWS: Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off at half time in the first meeting and he will not be risked from the start this evening. James, who came from the bench to score on his debut on Tuesday, starts on the left side of attack, while Marcelo and Pepe are replaced in defence by Fabio Coentrao and Raphael Varane.
ATLETI TEAM NEWS: Arda Turan is still out with a thigh injury but Diego Simeone makes two changes to the side that started the first leg. Mario Suarez drops to the bench with Tiago filling his spot in midfield and Saul makes way for Antoine Griezmann who will play a supporting role behind Mario Mandzukic.
No side will want to taste disappointment at the earliest stage of the season either. Real Madrid have already had a taste of glory this campaign as they defeated Sevilla to lift the European Super Cup. Carlo Ancelotti's side will need to score tonight if they are to secure an early double. First, though, the team news.
The competitive nature of Super Cup games is often called into question, but when these Madrid rivals face off their is never a lack of fire on the field. Add to that Atleti's likely desire to avenge their Champions League final loss to los Blancos back in May, there is certainly plenty to play for.
