Ex-Barcelona man David Villa inspired an impressive showing by scoring a double and providing an assist, as his team now trail the Catalans by only a pointAtletico Madrid eased past Betis with a 5-0 victory at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.
Oliver Torres opened the scoring early on and David Villa then finished his drought impressively by tripling Atleti's lead with back-to-back goals early into the second half. Diego Costa and Gabi wrapped up the result with their finishes towards the end of the match.
Only 15 seconds in, Koke found Torres in front of the box and passed on to the striker to tap in for the lead.
The advantage was successfully taken into half-time and, shortly after it, Villa marked an impressive comeback as he picked up a cross to head in for the 2-0.
Not long later, it was again the former Barcelona star who got hold of the ball within the visitors' area and Villa was able to blast the ball into the net with his left foot.
In the 64th minute, Villa then rounded up his brilliant performance as he assisted the 4-0 by delivering a brilliant pass to Costa to send the ball into the far corner of the target.
Gabi then completed the rout in stoppage-time, leaving a devastated Betis in 18th place in La Liga, meanwhile Atleti are trailing table-toppers Barcelona by only one point.
Former Blaugrana star Villa was delighted with having made such a great impact and praised team-mate Torres for his goalscoring debut.
"I am happy above all for the goals and helping the team is always important," he told Canal Plus.
"[Torres] has a fantastic future ahead of him and that's why it's important not to rush him.
"He put in a great performance today and people will have many, many years to enjoy this lad. We have to be patient as he has all he needs to be a special player."
