Atlético Madrid win Aggregate 5 - 1
Diego Simeone's outfit progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate win over seven-time competition winners, Milan. Diego Costa opened the scoring just three minutes in with a fantastic finish but were pegged back 27 minutes in through a Kaka header. The Brazilian missed a great opportunity later on in the half and the hosts took advantage and went 2-1 up through Arda Turan. Raul Garcia and Diego Costa again were on the scoresheet in the second period to complete the rout and make it 4-1 on the night. Everyone will be fearing Los Colchoneros in the quarter-final draw, that's for sure! I'm Martin Macdonald, thanks for joining us! See you next time!
Full time in Madrid!
90' + 1'
The Vicente Calderon is absolutely bouncing! They know their team will be a force to be reckoned with in this season's competition!
Only two minutes of stoppage time to play. There's probably more than that, but Milan certainly don't want to suffer this any longer, they've been blown away in the second half.
It's party time in Madrid tonight! Atletico are heading to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and in emphatic fashion. It'll come all the sweeter that they have put out seven-time winners, Milan, too.
GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID!! The cherry on top! Diego Costa latches on to a loose ball inside the Milan box and takes a stride or two before rifling a strike in off the left-hand post! Four-one!
Milan not even really bothering to chase the ball down now.
Atletico are just knocking the ball around comfortably in the middle of the park at the moment as they look to run down the clock. Milan, and Balotelli in particular, are cutting extremely frustrated figures.
And Simeone utilises his squad further as the brilliant Koke is replaced by on-loan Wolfsburg star, Diego. All three of Atletico's substitutions today have saw the player coming off receive a massive cheer.
Nigel De Jong
Both Seedorf and Simeone make a change as Arda Turan and Nigel De Jong come off to be replaced by Cristian Rodriguez and Sully Muntari respectively.
Seedorf is attempting to act as cheerleader for the Italian side but it looks like it's all falling on deaf ears. Milan know they are beaten, but they still have over 15 minutes to rain on the parade a little for Atletico.
Real frustration creeping in for Milan now as well as indiscipline. Robinho is the latest player to go into the book for a cynical rake of the studs down the back of Gabi's leg.
ROBINHOOOO!!! ALMOST AN INSTANT REPLY FROM MILAN! The Brazilian latches on to a loose ball inside the box and rattles a shot off the crossbar from 10 yards out! Courtois had no chance!
That'll be the Atletico man's last action on the pitch as he is withdrawn to a standing ovation to be replaced by Jose Sosa. Diego Simeone leads the applause for his player making his way to the sidelines. Nice to see.
GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID! THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY TO THE QUARTER-FINALS! Gabi clips in a free kick from the right-hand side and Raul Garcia rises above everyone to glance a header in the bottom corner! Three-one!
Yellow CardDaniele Bonera
Clarence Seedorf makes his second change of the match as Michael Essien comes off to be replaced by Giampaolo Pazzini. It's make or break for the Rossoneri now!
Very poor this time from the Brazilian though. He collects the ball 30 yards from goal and looks to hit a dipping strike at goal but it ends up being screwed harmlessly wide, with no threat being posed to the Atletico goal.
Robinhoooo! Decent effort from a tight angle! The substitute takes on Juanfran inside the box before shifting the ball on to his left and fizzing a strike towards the far post. Courtois beats the ball back into the danger area but there are no takers for Milan on the rebound!
Mario, Mario, calm down. There's just some signs of the red mist creeping over Balotelli now as he gets wound up by Felipe. If he gets a red, then Milan have no chance of saving this tie.
Everything delightful from Raul Garcia apart from the finish. He collects the ball on the edge of the box with a wonderful touch before swiftly turning to face goal, but his eventual shot on goal goes yards over the bar. He gets an ovation for his efforts, though.
Mirandaaaaaa! Almost a superb goal! Mario Suarez spreads a lovely pass out wide for Gabi and the Atletico captain reverses a pass down the wing for Diego Costa. The central defender gets on the end of the eventual corner but he just can't generate enough power to get his attempt beyond Abbiati!
Well, a tiny bit. He smashes his free kick off the top of the Atletico wall and Milan get the corner. The resulting set-piece is swung in but Courtois comes out to easily claim.
Another set-piece opportunity for Milan here as Balotelli goes down under the challenge of Mario Suarez 25 yards out. The Italian didn't do too well from his first free kick attempt, so let's see if he's improved.
The ball comes in to the feet of Balotelli and he quickly tries to pop it off to Essien 25 yards out, but it was rushed slightly and Gabi comes in with the important interception.
The Vicente Calderon crowd are once again cheering in force after that minor blip in the first half, but one goal from Milan may see some nervous murmurs creep into the stands...
Gabi whips a cross into the box and the ref blows for a foul as Diego Costa goes in with a high boot on Rami. The Frenchman does, maybe, nine or ten rolls on the floor after it to try and get the Atletico man a card, but it doesn't happen.
Abate drives down the right-hand side and exchanges a one-two with Balotelli before whipping a cross to the near post. It's nearly calamitous for Atletico as Courtois and Suarez get in each others way, but the on-loan Chelsea keeper eventually manages to scoop up possession.
Koke swings a corner in and it's right on top of Abbiati, which naturally means that any contact will mean the ref blowing his whistle for a foul. Raul Garcia is the perpetrator on this occasion.
GABIIIII!!!! ATLETICO MADRID HIT THE POST! Diego Costa counterattacks at tremendous pace through the middle and shifts the ball to the right for his captain, who cannons a thunderous strike off the top of the woodwork! Milan let off the hook!
A change to report for you at the break as Clarence Seedorf adds some fresh legs to the Milan ranks. On-loan QPR attackers Adel Taarabt, is replaced by Robinho, who'll be deployed down the right-hand side.
We are back under way at Vicente Calderon!
Half time in Madrid. A scintillating opening 45 minutes at the Vicente Calderon ends. Atletico currently on their way to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate lead over Milan in this round of 16 clash. Diego Costa opened the scoring early on but Kaka clawed the Italian side back into contention just before the hour mark. Arda Turan popped up five minutes before half time with a fortuitous deflected strike over Abbiati, which may take the game beyond Seedorf's men. Still plenty more goals in this, though!
45' + 2'
Yellow CardMario Balotelli
45' + 1'
Essien looks for Balotelli with a ball over the top of the defence but Godin comes in with a clearance straight into row Z. The Italian has something to say for himself to the ref, and ends up getting a booking. Daft, he'll miss the quarter final second leg if Milan get there.
We dont want the half time whistle here! The past five minutes or so have been absolutely electric! Milan will feel hard done by at going behind again, but they definitely have the firepower in their ranks to mount a comeback!
RAUL GARCIAAAAA!!! WHAT A SENSATIONAL EFFORT! The ball is curled to the back post and the 27-year-old sees it all the way before shifting his body for a terrific overhead kick towards goal! INCHES wide! So incredibly unlucky!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLL FOR ATLETICO MADRID!! SIMEONE'S MEN RE-TAKE THE LEAD! Raul Garcia chests the ball down to Arda on the edge of the box and Turk floats a deflected volley over the head of Abbiati! It came straight off the foot of Rami! Two-one! A HUGE element of luck in that for the hosts!
Taarabt then attempts a terribly difficult pass down the left-hand side as he looks to curl the ball in between two Atletico players for the onrushing Emanuelson. The Dutchman doesn't get there, and Juanfran easily sees it out for a goal kick.
KAAAKAAAAA! WHAT A MISS! Taarabt whips a sensational cross into the danger area and the former Madrid man leaps highest inside the box, but bullets his header over the bar from just outside the six yard box!
This game has completely turned on it's side here. Atletico had Milan in hiding with their intense pressure and tempo in the opening stages, but the likes of Kaka, Poli, and Balotelli and clawed the Italians back into contention.
A missed opportunity for Milan! The visitors counterattack at pace through the middle and Kaka drifts beyond a couple of challenges. Balotelli is in acres of space down the left channel but the Brazilian's pass is too close to Courtois!
De Jong and Raul Garcia get involved in a small tiff in the middle of the park after the Dutchman judged the Atletico man to have gone down too easy in a challenge with Essien. It looked like a poor challenge, but it would have to be pretty strong for the former Man City man to accept!
Oooohhhh that's poor from Abate! Milan confidently spread the play from left to right and the ball comes to the Italian in plenty of space and, with three team-mates inside the box, horribly screws his cross behind the goal! Balotelli gives a clap of encouragement, though.
Milan are definitely in the ascendancy here! The Vicente Calderon crowd has been abruptly muted, and all the noise is coming from the Milanese travelers in the away section!
GOOOOAAAALLLLLL!! GOOOOAAAAALLLL!! GOOOOAAAALLL!!! MILAN EQUALISE!!! Balotelli reverses a superb pass out to the right for Poli who clips a brilliant cross to the back post. Former Real Madrid star Kaka is on hand to head past Courtois! One-One! That was coming!
Great defending from Bonera. The Milan defender is involved in a footrace with Diego Costa to get to a loose ball just 10 yards outside his own box, but he does brilliantly to shake off the attentions of the Madrid man to nod the ball back to Abbiati.
Seedorf's men are just camped outside the Atletico box at the moment, and each pass is being met with deafening cheers from the crowd. They really do create some atmosphere in the Vicente Calderon! Intimidating for any team!
Milan just knocking the ball around a bit more contently now. The barrage at the opening game from Atletico has subsided slightly and it's allowed the Italians to find their feet. Courtois still to be worked in the home goal, though.
Obviously, now that Atletico have scored at home, extra time is no longer a possibility in this tie. Apologies to all who were looking forward to an extra half-hour of yours truly's fantastic live commentary!
Arda cuts in from the right-hand side and looks to reverse a cute pass in between the defence Koke, but the Milan defence manage to smuggle the ball away. Atletico relentlessly hound Emanuelson until the Dutchman surrenders possession. Brilliant work ethic from the hosts.
Well, all Balotelli achieves with the set-piece is to give Diego Costa a very, very painful groin. I'll let you make your own minds up about that one!
Milan with a good opportunity to get some service into the box now as Miranda upends Balotelli around 35 yards out from goal. It looks like the former Man City man will hit it himself...
Koke whips in a corner kick to the front post and Balotelli bullets the set-piece out of the box with authority. Gabi picks up on the edge of the area and looks for Godin at the back post but there's just too much on the cross and Milan get the goal kick.
Juanfran shakes off the attentions of Balotelli before clipping a ball up the right wing, but De Jong nips in proactively to take the ball off the foot of Gabi. Milan just enjoying a small period of sustained possession at the moment. Let's see if they can make anything from it.
Our first real glimpse of Balotelli sees the Italian brilliantly beat off the tackles off two Atletico players to hold up the ball and spray a pass out the right for Abate, who comes storming up the right flank.
Gabi initially floats a cross to the back post which looks badly overhit, but credit to Felipe for bursting a gut down the left-hand side to collect the ball just at the corner flag. Atletico retain and pop the ball around the final third.
Oooohhh that's inches away for Atletico! Mario Suarez and Diego Costa both get something on a free kick into the box and squeeze an attempt towards goal, but it just goes the wrong side of the post! Abbiati was certainly worried by the attempt!
The resulting free kick from the Rami challenge is floated into the box, but this time Milan defend well to clear the danger.
Yellow CardAdil Rami
Rami is the latest player to go into the book as he charges down the oncoming Diego Costa just outside the Milan box. That's bad news, as he'll need to try and keep his head and not get booked for the remaining 83 minutes of play.
Milan just have not got out the blocks yet. They look like a rabbit in headlights in this intense Vicente Calderon atmosphere!
Yellow CardRaúl García
It's very sweet to slightly sour for Atletico within a minute as they take the lead but then see Raul Garcia booked for a poor challenge on Balotelli. The Spaniard will now miss the first leg of the quarter final...if his side go through.
GOOOOOOAAAALLLL! GOOOAAAAALLLL! GOOOOAAAALLLL!! ATLETICO TAKE THE EARLY LEAD! Koke clips a lovely cross to the back post and Diego Costa somehow stretches out a leg to divert the ball past Abbiati! One-nil!
Probably a sign of thinks to come here as Diego Costa and Adil Rami are involved in a bit of a strength battle in the middle of the park. The Frenchman comes out best on this occasion, but I doubt he'll have it all his own way tonight.
WE ARE UNDER WAY IN MADRID!
THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE THEME SOUNDS OUT IN THE STADIUM! A PLACE IN THE QUARTER-FINALS IS UP FOR GRABS!
The teams have just made their way on the pitch. What an atmosphere inside Vicente Calderon!
Spain has not proved to be a happy hunting ground for Milan in recent years. The Rossoneri's last four away defeats in European competition have all came in Spain, with the last being a 3-1 defeat versus Barcelona at Camp Nou in this campaign's group stage.
The returning David Villa helped Atletico on their way to a comfortable 2-0 away victory over Celta Vigo on Saturday, whereas Milan went down 1-0 away to Udinese.
Both sides enter the match with conflicting fortunes from their weekend fixtures.
The match tonight may turn out be the tail of the striker. Diego Costa and Mario Balotelli are two of the most exciting centre-forwards in the world at the moment, but will it be the newly christened Spaniard or the Italian who will feature in the quarter-finals?
Speaking of the coaches. Simeone and Seedorf have battled before at playing level in both the Madrid and Milan derby, so they'll certainly be encourgaing a fighting spirit amongst their respective squads.
Seven-time competition winners, Milan, are having a disappointing season and currently sit 10th in Serie A, but will be looking to newly appointed manager, Clarence Seedorf, for inspiration. The Dutchman has lifted the Champions League four times.
Atletico have won 15 of their last 16 home games in UEFA competition, including three straight victories in this season's group stage. Los Colchoneros are playing above expectations in the Spanish Primera Division this season, and currently sit second in the table one point ahead of champions, Barcelona.
It's more or less full strength for both sides then. The one exception is Milan captain Ricardo Montolivo, who is still serving a suspension due to his red card against Ajax in the group stage.
Milan (4-2-3-1): Abbiati; Abate, Rami, Bonera, Emanuelson; De Jong, Essien; Taarabt, Poli, Kaka; Balotelli.
Atletico (4-4-2): Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis; Koke, Mario Suárez, Gabi, Arda; Raul Garcia, Diego Costa.
A solitary strike from Diego Costa in the first leg at San Siro is the difference at the halfway point of this tie, as Diego Simeone's men go in with a 1-0 advantage.
I'm Martin Macdonald, and it is my pleasure to take you through the action tonight!
