Live Commentary

  • That's all we've got time for from our Champions League coverage, as Atletico continue their excellent home form in the competition with a comprehensive victory over the struggling Vienna. I've been Simon Harrison, and I hope to see you all again next time!
  • Goals from Miranda, Raul Garcia, Filipe Luis and Diego Costa were enough to secure the win, against a Vienna side that only generated one real chance. Murg tested Courtois in the first half, but aside from this, the Austrian champions laboured.
  • FULL TIME! Atletico get the three points, beating Austria Vienna 4-0, in a very efficient performance at Estadio Vicente Calderon. The visitors didn't really have a sniff in what was a very one-sided affair.
  • 90'
Only one minute has been added, with the officials perhaps having some mercy for the away side, who presumably want to get back to the changing rooms as soon as possible.
  • 89'
We're into the dying embers of the game, and I'm sure that all connected to Vienna will be hoping to hear the referee's final whistle rather soon. This game hasn't been a contest, Atletico have been superior in every way thinkable, and in truth, minus one first half chance, Vienna have created nothing.
  • 87'
Vienna continue to patrol the edge of their own penalty area, but no further, as Atletico continue to be pushed forward by the desire of Diego Costa. The in-form striker tries his luck again from range, and isn't far away as the ball thuds into the advertising boards.
  • 85'
A poor challenge from Dilaver leads Diego Costa in a heap, and Atletico fans sigh a collective breath of relief when their goalscorer returns to his feet. He's straight back in the thick of it though, curling an effort narrowly wide of Lindner's far post.
  • 83'
The celebrations said it all there, Diego Costa wouldn't have been a happy man if he'd have left without a goal tonight! Atletico edge towards the final whistle with a ridiculously comfortable lead now.
  • 82'
    Assist Raúl García
  • 82'
    Goal Diego Costa
GOOOOAL! DIEGO COSTA AT LAST! It's 4-0 to Atletico, and the Brazilian loved that goal, he's been waiting for it all night! After six great chances, he's got his goal, wrong footing Lindner with a curling finish.
  • 81'
We're into the last ten minutes, and Estadio Vicente Calderon is in great voice. Atletico's fans will be buoyed by this performance, as their momentum this season just keeps on building. Dare they dream of cup success in one of their competitions this season?
  • 80'
DIEGO COSTA! Yet again, it's Costa! He weaves in between three players inside the penalty area, but just as he tries to pull the trigger, the ball is stabbed away from beneath him! Frustrations levels are rising for the Brazilian...
  • 79'
Lindner races off his line excellently to clear the ball from off Diego Costa's boot, as Ortlechner looked to fall asleep once again. The Vienna keeper has been in inspired form in this second half, Atletico can't seem to muster up anything to beat him!
  • 78'
Diego Costa tosses his gloves to the sidelines of the field, perhaps he thinks that they're bringing him bad luck, or is he just a tad warm? It doesn't matter anyhow, as Lindner makes yet another save at his near post to parry a Costa effort behind for a corner.
  • 77'
Well, tonight just isn't Diego Costa's night! He's played excellently, creating chances for both himself and teammates, but the cutting edge just isn't quite there. Anyone would have backed the Atletico forward to score there, but Lindner denied him well.
  • 76'
PENALTY SAVED! LINDNER GUESSES THE RIGHT WAY! Diego Costa tries to place the ball in the bottom right corner, but the Austrian goalkeeper reaches out an arm to beat it away! Good save.
  • 75'
    Missed Penalty Diego Costa
  • 75'
    Penalty save Heinz Lindner
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Manuel Ortlechner
  • 75'
PENALTY TO ATLETICO! Ortlechner is the guilty party, clattering Rodriguez to the ground!
  • 74'
DIEGO COSTA! The Brazilian beats Ortlechner far too easily once again, after facing up the opposition captain and then beating him with a quick stepover. He attempts to find the goal, but a Vienna defender blocks on the line!
  • 73'
Atletico aren't playing at the same tempo as in the first half, as obviously there is less at stake now they're three goals to the good. The introduction of Guilavogui in the centre of midfield has been useful as a physical presence, and Vienna are still struggling to get a foothold in the centre of the park.
  • 71'
GREAT SAVE! LINDNER DENIES RODRIGUEZ! The substitutes bursts into space on the edge of the box, unleashing a great effort towards the top right hand corner, but the Vienna goalkeeper leaps across well to beat it away!
  • 70'
Royer breaks down the right excellently, before delivering across the six yard box, but Juanfran is on hand to clear! Atletico then take the impetus, racing up the other end, but a cross from Torres finds nobody in a red and white shirt.
  • 69'
    Yellow Card Christian Ramsebner
  • 69'
Ramsebner picks up a yellow for bringing down the imperious Diego Costa, as the Brazilian gets the better of his marker yet again. Atletico take it short, and Juanfran is eventually forced all the way back to his own half and the chance to deliver peters out.
  • 68'
    Substitution Florian Mader Emir Dilaver
  • 67'
Vienna play their way out of trouble again, working the ball nicely down the right, but Holland's long ball in search of Kienast is cut out by Juanfran. The visitors can't escape their own half, their clearances keep on coming back within 30 seconds.
  • 66'
    Substitution Koke Cristian Rodríguez
  • 65'
Excellent work from Koke! The midfielder tracks back excellently to nip in and steal the ball off Hosiner as the substitute bears down on goal. What a future this midfielder has, his off the ball work is almost as good as what he's capable on doing when it's in his possession.
  • 64'
SAVE! LINDNER! Raul Garcia gets up to head at goal, but the Vienna goalkeeper is equal to in! The linesman has his flag up, and play is pulled back for the offside decision, but it was a reasonable stop nonetheless.
  • 62'
Vienna may be three goals behind, and have had no reason to be optimistic based off their performance, but the Austrian side are beginning to press a little higher up the field, which is giving them a little bit more success. Unfortunately, though they may win the ball more often, they haven't got the quality to capitalise.
  • 60'
Still no offensive forays forward for the visitors, despite Kienast being partnered up front by Hosiner. The latter found himself in space on the left, due to poor positioning from Juanfran, but nobody in a white shirt spotted their compatriot in such a good area.
  • 58'
A lull in terms of chances, but Atletico continue to have this game by the scruff of the neck. The substitutions made by Simeone show their dominance, he's prepared to let his bit part young players prove their worth on the European stage.
  • 56'
    Substitution Tiago Guilavogui
  • 56'
Another substitution for Atletico, as the veteran Tiago is replaced by a much younger player, Guilavogui. Both the Frenchman and Torres have shown great promise this season, and look to be fantastic rotational options as they bid for first team football for self-improvement.
  • 55'
KOKE! The young midfielder fires into the side netting from a free-kick in a reasonable position. Lindner knows that it's going wide of the man, and allows the ball to nestle outside of his post. A let off for Vienna, who keep giving fouls away in Leovac's zone.
  • 53'
    Substitution Tomas Simkovic Philipp Hosiner
  • 53'
Diego Costa continues to be a real handful, the Brazilian looks determined to grab a goal tonight if it's the last thing he does. Harrying opponents out of possession and dancing around defenders when he does have the ball, it's been a majestic performance thus far.
  • 52'
    Substitution Thomas Murg Markus Suttner
  • 51'
DIEGO COSTA! What a delicious run from the Atletico striker! He picks the ball up from deep, before driving and weaving at those ahead of him, riding two challenges and bursting into a pocket of space. He shoots, but his powerful effort is straight down the throat of Lindner! Unlucky.
  • 50'
Simeone continues to pace around his technical area, even though his team don't really need too much in the way of additional instructions. Atletico continue to dominate, and Vienna aren't even mustering up counter attacks.
  • 49'
DIEGO COSTA! Filipe Luis is found in plenty of space on the left hand side, before the Brazilian flights in a delivery to his compatriot Diego Costa. He nods the ball down for Torres, but the youngster can't get a foot to it.
  • 48'
Despite being three goals down, Vienna are continuing with the same system, and Kienast is presumably getting rather lonely up front on his own. The target man has had nothing in the way of service.
  • 47'
As predicted, Oliver Torres gets a run out in the second half, as the teenager has impressed in his first couple of La Liga starts recently, even bagging a goal. Adrian had an occasionally dangerous first half, but the Spaniard is rightly withdrawn, those around him have been more effective.
  • 46'
    Substitution Adrián Oliver Torres
  • 46'
We are back underway for the second half! Neither Vienna's players or fans will be too optimistic, but they've still got their pride to play for this evening. Cholo's instructions will be a request for more of the same in the second half, and he'll presumably get his wish.
  • Atletico Madrid have never lost against Austria Vienna, and Diego Simeone's current side don't seem to be about to let the club down. A merciless first half has left the Spanish side with a dream scenario heading into the second period of 45 minutes. Perhaps some youngsters will get a game.
  • Goals from Miranda, Raul Garcia and Filipe Luis have given the hosts a very strong lead at the break, and it seems unlikely that Vienna will even manage to find the net. Murg went closest, forcing a good save from Courtois, but the visitors have rarely threatened.
  • HALF TIME! The referee perhaps has mercy with Vienna, and blows the whistle for half time as soon as is physically possible. Simeone's men are in a commanding position, and look to be heading into the next round the Champions League.
  • 45'
    Goal Filipe Luis
GOOOOAL! FILIPE LUIS GETS THE THIRD! It's another rebound under suspicion of being offside, but Atletico have their killer goal! Lindner made a good initial save, but he can do nothing about the Brazilian stabbing the follow-up home from six yards.
  • 44'
DIEGO COSTA! Lindner is able to pounce upon the loose ball, after Costa beats Koch and then tries to centre the ball in search of Garcia from the byline! He's off balance, however, and can only stab the ball into the grasp of the opposition goalkeeper!
  • 42'
KIENAST! Well, what a terrible effort that was. You can see why Vienna are yet to score in the Champions League with shooting like that. The physically imposing striker shoots from about 35 yards, and the ball nearly finds itself in the second tier of the stands.
  • 41'
Unlucky for Tiago! The Portuguese midfielder tries to release Diego Costa cleverly with a first time lofted ball, but puts a bit too much on it. The Brazilian chases, but it's in vain, as the ball skids out for a goal kick.
  • 39'
Diego Costa is incensed, as the Brazilian is penalised for a supposed shove on Ortlechner, the Vienna captain. There wasn't much in it, but the Atletico hitman won't be doing himself any favours by getting involved with the referee.
  • 38'
Less than ten minutes until the break, and Atletico continue to search for that goal which would really take the pressure off for the second half. If they find it, I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Oliver Torres and Guilavogui in the second 45 minutes.
  • 36'
Diego Costa is looking in such fine form tonight, it's easy to see why the likes of Spain and Brazil are fighting for his eligibility for the national side. Silky on the ball, but powerful and athletic enough to charge through challenges, he's proving to be unplayable.
  • 35'
A lull in terms of chances, but Atletico continue to dominant in terms of chances. Raul Garcia drops deep into the space in between the lines, before spinning off and looking to play an incisive ball to the advancing Koke. The intended pass is good, but Ramsebner is able to cut it out.
  • 33'
RAUL GARCIA! The goalscorer almost grabs another for the night, as he leaps in an attempt to turn home a good cross from Juanfran! Atletico are delivering crosses with worrying ease here, Juanfran and Leovac look unable to get tight to their men.
  • 31'
Vienna are unable to even get out of their own half. Kienast is built to receive direct passes, but the visitors' long balls aren't reaching their intended target man. Atletico are preying off the mistakes and possible fear of the travelling side, and aren't giving their opposition a moment to breathe.
  • 29'
We're almost at the half hour mark, and Vienna's travelling support are presumably praying for the half time whistle already. Atletico appear to be mercilessly going for the kill, and a third goal would really kill this game off as a contest.
  • 28'
Atletico pick up a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, of Leovac is penalising for shoving Diego Costa to the ground. Vienna really can't handle the Brazilian thus far!
  • 27'
It's relentless from Atletico, as the hosts continue to press and move the ball at pace. Vienna look out of their depth against an in-form side here, I think that Bjelica might be watching this game through his fingers in the stands! Cruise control for Cholo's side at the minute.
  • 26'
DIEGO COSTA! Lindner is forced into a great save, palming the Brazilian's effort over the crossbar with a strong right hand! A dipping half volley from Costa almost made this game embarrassing for Vienna!
  • 25'
    Assist Diego Costa
  • 25'
    Goal Raúl García
GOOOOOAL! RAUL GARCIA SCORES! It's 2-0 to Atletico, as Garcia heads his side further in front! An excellent cross from Diego Costa finds his teammate, and it's a great finish from the Spaniard!
  • 22'
ROYER! The Vienna midfielder tries his luck from 30 yards, but his shot is always arcing away from the target. The Austrian claims that the strike may have clipped Godin on its way out of play, but really it was just a poor effort.
  • 21'
WHAT A SAVE! Courtois hasn't done anything all game, and his first involvement is a top save! An outrageously good touch from Murg allows for the left midfielder to cut inside from the right, but as he looks to finish, Courtois races off his line to make a brilliant block!
  • 20'
Atletico are in total control of this game, Kienast hasn't touched the ball since the first five minutes. Juanfran and Filipe Luis have free reign to get forward, giving the hosts real width, and Vienna seemingly have no answer.
  • 19'
Audacious skill from Filipe Luis! The Brazilian knocks the ball around one side of his man, before racing around the other outpacing Koch with ease! Fortunately for Vienna, Ramsebner reads the danger and tackles the gallivanting full-back.
  • 17'
DIEGO COSTA! SO CLOSE! Magical close control from the forward, he weaves his way in between two challenges after great work in between the lines by Adrian! He shapes to shoot, fakes, moves the ball out of his feet, but a reasonable save from Lindner denies him!
  • 16'
RAUL GARCIA! Filipe Luis cuts the ball back from the byline excellently, but his teammate can only scuff a shot wide of the target from the edge of the penalty area! Good work from Atletico's Brazilian left-back.
  • 15'
A quarter of an hour into the contest, and Diego Simeone will be relatively pleased. Courtois has had nothing to do in between the sticks for the hosts, and Vienna have struggled to break out of their half and create anything meaningful.
  • 13'
The atmosphere inside the stadium has improved threefold, with the home fans really getting being their side now that they are ahead. The nerves are perhaps settled a little, and after a scrappy first goal, we might see some silkier play from the La Liga side.
  • 12'
How costly Leovac's error appears to be now! The Austrian defender shouldn't have lost out to Juanfran deep in his own half, and the corner which he would forced to concede has cost his side dearly! Not the ideal start for the visitors, they've got their work cut out now.
  • 11'
    Goal Miranda
GOOOOAL! MIRANDA! The Brazilian central defender gives his side the lead, firing home the rebound after Koke's initial header is blocked! Atletico lead 1-0!
  • 10'
Leovac loses the ball in the left-back position needlessly, allowing for the advanced Juanfran to hound the loose ball away from him. The right-back tries to cross, but Leovac clears for a corner.
  • 9'
As previously mentioned, Vienna are the only team in the Champions League to not manage to find the back of the net in the current competition. They struck the post against Atletico when the two sides faced in Austria, but that is the closest Bjelica's men have come to scoring.
  • 8'
The first opportunity of the night falls to Koke, and the young talent blazes wildly over from 30 yards. A bit of a waste, as the Spaniard probably wasn't pragmatically going to find the net from there, but if you don't try your luck, you won't score!
  • 7'
Nothing for either goalkeeper to do thus far, as the game turns into something of a midfield battle. Atletico look to have potential to test Vienna down the wings, as would be expected when Juanfran and Filipe Luis are your adventurous full-backs.
  • 6'
Filipe Luis and Adrian take it in turns to go on jinking runs, with their markers unable to get anywhere near them. The difference between the two sides is that Atletico might be able to rely on the occasional brilliance of their star men, while any success for Vienna will probably come from a collective effort.
  • 4'
Vienna will be encouraged by this start, as Diego Costa has seen none of the ball early on. An early goal would be perfect for them, it'd give their game plan something to defend. Simeone is getting animated already!
  • 3'
KIENAST! The Austria international finds himself in a pocket of space ahead of Godin, but a sliding recovery from Tiago makes the block. The first offensive warning signs are coming from the away side, unexpectedly.
  • 2'
Vienna start as expected, leaving the rather tall Kienast isolated up front, and packing the midfield with white shirts. It seems that Bjelica's side are set up to frustrate, but it will be tough to resist the quality that Atletico boast amongst their ranks.
  • 1'
We are underway in this Champions League Group G match! Atletico are in their red and white stripes, with Vienna wearing a rather stylish white and purple kit!
  • There's a good atmosphere in Estadio Vicente Calderon, with the visitors bringing a reasonably sized purple army of support. This is a tough place for any team to come to, let alone a side struggling for form in a less competitive domestic league!
  • Five minutes until kick-off, and given Vienna's goalscoring record paired with Atletico having solid defensive foundations, there looks to be only one result here tonight. The Champions League is designed to give the lesser teams an opportunity to impress on the big stage however, so don't think it to be a foregone conclusion quite yet!
  • Though Diego Costa is in form, Austria Vienna will be hoping that they too have taken a turn for the better. The visitors' victory over Wiener Neustadt on the weekend ended a winless spell that spanned seven matches! Never mind a win, the away side would probably just like to score, they've not managed a Champions League group stage goal thus far - but they have struck the woodwork twice.
  • Diego Costa is frighteningly back in action tonight, after missing Atletico's first two group games through suspension, as the forward had to complete a ban following a red card against Viktoria Plzen. The highly rated Brazilian is in good form however, having netted at the weekend against Athletic Bilbao.
  • Vienna substitutes: Grunwald, Rogulj, Okotie, Jun, Hosiner, Dilaver, Suttner.
  • Vienna starting line-up: Lindner; Koch, Ramsebner, Ortlechner, Leovac; Royer, Mader, Holland, Simkovic, Murg; Kienast.
  • Atletico substitutes: Aranzubia, David Villa, Rodriguez, Alderweireld, Guilavogui, Oliver Torres, Insua.
  • Atletico starting line-up: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis; Adrian, Tiago, Gabi, Koke, Raul Garcia; Diego Costa.
  • TEAM NEWS: Roman Kienast leads the line for the away side, acting as presumably a target man with his spindly, tall figure - Philipp Hosiner drops to the bench as a result. Oliver Torres makes the bench for the hosts, the teenager has been a rather big hit in the last month, and David Villa joins him.
  • An interesting link between the two sides tonight comes in the form of Nenad Bjelica, the manager of Vienna. The Croatian has faced Diego Simeone four times in his footballing career, as he previously plied his trade for Albacete, Real Betis and Las Palmas. As a player, Vienna's manager managed only one victory, leaving him with the unenviable task of trying to double his wins tonight.
  • This is only the third time that the two teams have met, the previous being two legs of a European Champions Cup game, all the way back in 1970. Plenty has changed since then, but Atletico have won all of their historic clashes, the last of which being their 3-0 win in Austria last month.
  • If Austria Vienna's players were watching any of last night's fixtures, they can certain take some heart from Copenhagen's heroic victory over Galatasaray. Heading to Spain is a different scenario altogether, but Stale Solbakken's side showed how a disciplined game plan can be the undoing of a team with real quality players.
  • I'm Simon Harrison, and I will be your guide for the full 90 minutes this evening, as an Atletico side who sit second in La Liga, face off against an Austria Vienna outfit that are slumped in fifth in their own domestic division. Not much is expected of the visitors tonight, given the great start to the season Atletico have enjoyed, but football is played on grass, not paper, so form means nothing!
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of Atletico Madrid versus Austria Vienna, as the central European underdogs travel to one of the currently most feared stadiums on the continent! Diego Simeone's side are in top form, and will be looking to keep their good form going this evening at Estadio Vicente Calderon!
