A late penalty save from the experienced goalkeeper earned a point for the Nerazzuri after a well-taken header had levelled matters after the Dutchman's deflected effort
A penalty save from Luca Castellazzi helped Inter claim a 1-1 draw versus Atalanta at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Wednesday evening.
A German Denis header had cancelled out Wesley Sneijder's deflected strike to keep the hosts' unbeaten home record intact.
Inter travelled to Bergamo looking to kick-start their season and score their first consecutive victories of the campaign after Sunday's 1-0 win over Chievo. They made two changes; Dejan Stankovic came in for Thiago Motta in midfield, and Diego Milito replaced Giampaolo Pazzini up front.
The game opened in a frenetic fashion, with Inter having the best of the early possession. It was the home side, though, who had the first real opportunity of the game. Federico Peluso was offered a free header after six minutes, but his effort was easily saved by Julio Cesar.
Atalanta manged to wrestle back the majority of the possession, and were proving dangerous down the right-hand side, with Matias Schelotto in particular causing Yuto Nagatomo all sorts of problems.
With half an hour gone, Inter were still on the ropes. Atalanta's width was proving a real source of opportunity, but without any actual cutting edge. And that lack of killer instinct in front of goal proved fatal on 32 minutes.
Mauro Zarate charged down the right-hand flank, and played a short ball inside to Sneijder, who, from 25 yards out, fired a shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give Inter a 1-0 lead.
Atalanta soon rallied, and on the stroke of half-time they were level. A Moralez cross from the left-hand touchline found Denis unmarked inside the box, and he placed his header past Cesar to make the score 1-1 going into the break.
As with the first half, the second 45 started with Inter having the lion's share of possession, but with the hosts' creating more of the chances.
The introduction of Pazzini on the hour mark eventually gave Inter more of a solid base to their attack, but it was his strike partner who missed the best chance of the half. A cross from the right by Maicon found Milito, but the Argentine chested the ball over the bar from four yards out.
It could have been even worse for the visitors on the stroke of full-time, however. Chivu conceded a needless penalty in the 90th minute, but Castellazzi saved the resulting spot-kick, much to the relief of his team-mates.
The draw moves Atalanta up to 13th in the table as they travel away to Bologna on Sunday. Claudio Ranieri's men, however, continue to flounder and they now host Juventus in the Derby D'Italia on Saturday.
