A. Westwood 88' (own goal)
So what does that mean for West Ham? Stuck in a poor run of form, with five defeats on the bounce away from home, failing to create many chances. They definitely need a change of approach if they want to start picking up points on the road.
What a finish that was! I asked for goals earlier on, and the footballing Gods did not disappoint. A huge three points for Villa that takes them out of the relegation zone. West Ham will feel hard done by not to get anything out of the game, especially for their efforts in the second half, but they just did not offer enough going forward.
90' + 6'
Carlton Cole's header pushed over by Guzan! AND THAT'S FULL TIME!
90' + 5'
Nolan's shot saved by Guzan at his near post!
90' + 4'
Right at the death now, can Villa hold on?
90' + 2'
Yellow CardCiaran Clark
90' + 2'
Joe Cole's cross is really well claimed by Guzan, under pressure from Pogatetz.
90' + 1'
Great play from West Ham, with Carlton Cole cutting inside Clark, but Carroll just can't get any contact on his pass. Worrying moment for Villa. And now a free kick for the Hammers to get into the box...
Four added minutes for Villa to hold out.
Andy Carroll flicks on a long ball with Joe Cole and Kevin Nolan chasing it in on goal, but Guzan gets there first, great work from the keeper.
Own GoalAshley Westwood
OWN GOAL! Ashley Westwood has somehow flicked a cross past Guzan from the edge of his own box. Joe Cole's cross just looped in to the far corner past the keeper.
Yellow CardDarren Bent
So close for West Ham. Tomkins heads a looping cross back into the mixer. It's cleared to Vaz Te at the edge of the box, but his volley his deflected for a corner. Another cross and Vaz Te is penalised for jumping on top of substitute Dawkins.
Ricardo Vaz Te has a header saved by Guzan at his near post. He probably should have looked across goal, it wasn't going to beat him there.
Nick McGee at the game: "Hope now does spring eternal at Villa Park, with the home side on course for a vital win the fans are roaring them forward at every opportunity, one would think it is game over, but Villa conceded two late goals against Everton last week, so don't count your proverbial chickens."
It's cruel on West Ham, who have been the better side for much of the second half, but they have set up negatively and not really created anything to trouble Guzan.
WHAT A GOAL! Charles N'Zogbia gets his first goal of the Premier League season in what will surely be a vital win for the hosts. It is a fabulous free kick, bent over the wall and into the top of the net. The wall, it has to be said, does not get off the ground, and really didn't give Jaaskelainen much of a chance there.
Yellow CardWinston Reid
A couple of chances for the Hammers to get a shot on goal, but they can't get the ball under control. West Ham fans will have every reason to be unhappy with Sam Allardyce today. He's gone for a negative approach, and only after going behind has decided to put on another attacker.
Penalty GoalChristian Benteke
GOAL! Benteke rolls it home. How cool can you get? He gives Jaaskelainen the eyes and slots it slowly to the keeper's left.
PENALTY! Benteke and N'Zogbia link up well, with the midfieler turning inside the penalty area, and Noble brings him down.
Whipped in to the front post, but Nolan can't direct it goalwards.
Yellow CardNathan Baker
Joe Cole wins a free kick in a dangerous position.
Joe Cole gives the ball away on the edge of his own box. Benteke gets it by the touchline, by Cole gets back to block the cross. The Belgian striker then finds himself in space, but it is too much space and he is offside, placing his shot wide, anyway. Could someone please score a goal?
Ricardo Vaz Te
Reid overhits a backpass to Jaaskelainen, and the keeper just about clears it on the stretch. Hairy moment for the Hammers there.
Darren Bent has only been on the pitch for two minutes, but he's denied West Ham a goal. The striker is back to defend a corner, and as Andy Carroll finds space in the box, his strike is cleared off the line by Bent. Finally, some chances!
Almost! Charles N'Zogbia comes very close to opening the scoring. He gets the ball on the edge of the box, cuts in onto his left foot and unleashes a venomous effort towards the far post but it bends and weaves past, with Jaaskelainen waving it goodbye.
Jordan Nathaniel Bowery
Villa make a couple of changes, but it is the Hammers who are closer to scoring at the moment. A ball into the box towards Nolan, but as he looks to whip his foot around it, he loses his footing.
A shot! An actual shot! Demel's cross is pushed clear by Guzan, but only to the edge of the box. Nolan gets a shot off but it's blocked. Sorry if I got your hopes up there.
Villa drop a free kick into the box, and keep the ball in West Ham's territory, but can't make anything of it.
West Ham work a free kick forward and Demel's cross is cleared for a corner.
Benteke almost gets on the end of it, but it's cleared by the Hammers. A follow-up cross is then put into the box, but overhit. The game a little low on quality, to say the least.
Weimann gets forward, before playing in Lowery on the wing. His cross is cleared for a corner...
It's an assault on Villa's goal now. Taylor gets to the touchline and fires the ball across goal but it's cleared for a corner. His looping effort is just about cleared by Guzan, and then Diame fires a low one across the box, that is cleared by Ciaran Clark, with Tomkins waiting to tap in at the back post. Villa on the ropes at the moment.
Diame shows nice feet to get into the area, but Vlaar clears for a corner. Noble whips it in, but Baker and then N'Zogbia clear.
Cole's delivery on that one was a little worse, not clearing the first man, with the hosts able to get rid of it.
Joe Cole whips in a good ball, but with Guzan looking to collect, Lowery heads over for another corner.
Penalty appeal for the Hammers. Ron Vlaar has his hands on Carroll in the box, and the striker tumbles under the challenge, but Clattenburg waves away the appeals. Probably would have been a free kick if it was outside the box, that.
Both teams looking long now, but no success so far. I think West Ham fans will be a little disappointed with their team's tactics so far. Three points are there for the taking at the moment, but no-one is really pushing for them.
Corner for the visitors. After an initial clearance, it goes back into the box, and James Tomkins' volley is well blocked before another clearance from the hosts.
West Ham kick-off in the second half.
More from Nick McGee: "Half-time at Villa Park and the silence when referee Mark Clattenburg signalled the interval said it all. This has been a hugely disappointing contest bereft of chances ever since Andreas Weimann somehow missed an open goal in the early stages. I hate to say it but this one has 0-0 written all over it, and that suits West Ham more than it does Villa."
And that, thankfully, is that, for the next 15 minutes at least. Desperate, desperate stuff from both sides, with Weimann missing a glorious opportunity in the opening two minutes.
45' + 2'
Taylor finds Joe Cole in plenty of space down the left. His ball in finds Carroll, but the lay-off is behind Nolan. West Ham win it back, and Carroll is in plenty of space, but his effort from distance is wayward and doesn't cause any problems.
45' + 1'
Into four added minutes in the first half now.
Yellow CardEmanuel Pogatetz
Villa look to catch the visitors on the counter, but Pogatetz hauls down N'Zogbia and picks up the first yellow card of the match.
Villa having a good finish to the first half, but it's not really falling for them. The final pass isn't there at the moment.
Weimann looks to beat the offside trap, but he can't, and West Ham clear it long. Again.
Close! Vlaar meets a corner that initially looks poor, bouncing around the front post, and his half-volley into the floor just clears the crossbar. Villa sensing blood now, perhaps.
Villa have a free kick from distance. N'Zogbia touches it to Vlaar, but by the time he strikes the ball Noble is around two yards away, and the centre-back drags his effort well wide. A bit of a waste, and keeping in tone with the rest of the match so far.
A great move by West Ham through the centre of the field. Carroll moves it out wide to Demel on the overlap, but his cross is intercepted and Guzan can pick it up. A shade of a backpass there, but nothing doing from Mark Clattenburg.
Free kick to West Ham, with a chance to get the ball into the box, but Guzan comes a long way to claim, and does so very well.
Carroll has West Ham's first real effort for some time, but it's not a very good one. He gets up early to meet a cross, but his header is somewhere between a shot and a flick to the far post, and Guzan collects it easily.
That could have been controversial. Ashley Westwood tries to play a pass and referee Mark Clattenburg gets in the way. West Ham break, but Diame's attempted cross (it may have been a shot) skews wide of the near post on his weaker left foot.
Aston Villa definitely on top at the moment, but are not able to create anything of real danger. West Ham's formation isn't really helping them at all.
Villa pushing now. N'Zogbia works some space down the right and plays it into Lowery, but the youngster can't get a shot off. He tries to find Benteke, but as the striker pulls back to shoot, the ball is cleared.
Guy Demel is the man to replace O'Brien, with Tomkins waiting to get back on the pitch.
It looks like O'Brien's afternoon might be over. Having come back on the pitch, he has now left again. Worse for the Hammers, Tomkins catches a rogue boot in the face from Delph after sliding in on the Aston Villa man.
Diame does really well to get away from Lowton, but his cross is easily cleared.
Delph looks to thread a ball through but Tomkins does well to cut it out. Nathan Baker - already in the wars today - goes in for a big challenge with O'Brien, and the West Ham man is down receiving treatment after that. Not what manager Sam Allardyce needs.
In the 19th minute, Aston Villa fans lead their customary round of applause for absent captain Stiliyan Petrov.
Benteke gets a head to the ball, but it looked to take a little flick right before it got to him, and balloons over.
Pogatetz gives the hosts a good chance to whip in a free kick to the far post...
West Ham have adopted a pretty no-nonsense approach to defending so far, electing to kick it long at every opportunity. The only player who really looks like he's trying to get it down and play so far is Diame.
West Ham have the ball bouncing around the edge of Villa's area, but a free kick is given to the hosts. It's been a bit stop-start so far this afternoon.
Jaaskelainen restarts the game with a free kick. It looks like both players will be fine to continue.
Massive clash of heads here from the corner involving Nathan Baker and Andy Carroll. Both down injured.
Aston Villa win a corner, and after it is cleared, the ball back into the box is headed behind under little pressure from Joey O'Brien.
A bit quiet at Villa Park now, nothing much happening, with both sides a little reluctant to commit men forward.
Andy Carroll gets his first real involvement. The striker wins a header from a long free kick, and after it rebounds to him, his looping volley ends up on top of the net, though a back-tracking Brad Guzan had it covered.
Here's Nick McGee at the ground on that miss from Weimann: "Absolute incredulity all around at Villa Park following that spectacular miss from Andreas Weimann. You have to take your chances when you're in a relegation battle. Will Villa come to regret that?"
Oh my word. What a chance for Weimann. Christian Benteke's effort from the edge of the box is spilled really badly by Jussi Jaaskelainen, and from all of six yards out, Andi Weimann sidefoots an effort wide of the post. Contender for miss of the season there, it was just awful.
And Aston Villa get us underway.
The teams are in the tunnel, and we're just five minutes away from kick-off.
