The American goalkeeper was well beaten by Tchoyi’s curling left foot shot but otherwise was rarely tested despite West Brom’s early dominance.
Collins looked very comfortable alongside Cuellar, dominant in the air against Fortune and communicated well with his goalkeeper.
He had a real tough time against Tchoyi, the winger beat him on numerous occasions and could have given the visitors the lead on a couple of instances. The full back looked good going forward down the left and linked up well with Downing.
The young defender was given a tough time by Thomas and Brunt, looked good in the tackle but his inexperience meant lots of his challenges were last ditch after being beaten by his man.
A no-nonsense performance from the Spanish defender, he won his headers well but sometimes looked a bit off the pace when the Baggies attacked at speed.
The winger had very little impact in the opening 20 minutes until he scored at the back post from Albrighton’s cross. That sparked him into life and he was much more creative in the second half, he nearly returned the favour to Albrighton in the second half but the youngster couldn't direct his header goalwards.
A very energetic performance but his slight stature makes it hard for him to impose himself on the midfield. As a result he spent a lot of time chasing the ball. When he got in possession he was calm and composed and should have had a goal in the first half but his right foot shot was well wide. Was replaced by Nigel Reo-Coker midway through the second half.
The young midfielder broke up West Brom attacks well and kept his passing simple but struggled to dominate the midfield against the more experienced Baggies players.
A lively performance from the youngster who looked to take on his man whenever he could. He showed excellent skill to beat Cech in the 24th minute before delivering a dangerous cross which was well finished off by Downing. And in the second half he was the man to provide the cross for Heskey to head home the winning goal.
Captain for the day and he showed urgency to try and liven things up for his side, very rarely went backwards with his passing, he was much more likely to attack the West Brom defence and his runs caused trouble for Scharner and Tamas.
The striker led the line excellently and gave Villa a real focal point to build their attacks around. He gave Scharner and Tamas lots to think about with his running off the ball and ability in the air. He took his goal very well after two defenders had missed their clearance.
The Baggies captain had very little to do throughout the game and was not at fault for Downing’s goal as he was ready to block a header from Young at the front post. He claimed the ball well and was in control of the defence in front of him through good communication.
A mixed match for the full back, he was at fault for the first goal as he left Downing unmarked which allowed the winger to score at the back post. Otherwise Jara performed well, he was strong in the tackle and simple in his distribution.
Had a tough time against Downing and Albrighton as the two wingers regularly swapped positions. He should have been tighter to Marc Albrighton in the build up to Downing’s goal, he allowed the winger to beat him and deliver a dangerous cross which was converted at the back post.
He was not as influential as he would have liked to have been but alongside Dorrans they overpowered Hogg and Bannan. The midfielder had a great opportunity to equalise in the second half but his half volley was wide of the goal from eight yards when it looked easier to score. Replaced by Miller when the Baggies went to a more attacking formation.
The visitors' best player, he was a constant threat to the Villa defence and gave Warnock a torrid time. The Cameroon winger has great strength, good speed and excellent skills and he regularly showed all of them to beat his man. He was unlucky with an early shot which crashed against the crossbar with Freidel well beaten.
Did not stand out in the midfield but worked tirelessly alongside Morrison to deal with the attacking midfielders of Villa.
Playing as a central defender the Austrian looked comfortable alongside Tamas, he was good in the air and showed good composure on the ball and rarely gave possession away. Rose well to score an excellent goal to give his side a chance.
His direct running and dangerous crosses caused trouble to the Villa defence but Albion’s lack of attacking threat meant they weren’t converted, and Friedel was hardly tested. The winger kept running at the Villa defenders and was a constant threat but he was unable to find that piece of magic to get his side back into the match.
The striker struggled on his own up front with very little support. He only had scraps to work with and spent most of the match making room for others to run into.
- 13 G. Myhill
- 6 Pablo Ibáñez
- 20 N. Shorey
Replaced Jara late on to avoid the full back being sent off
- 21 Y. Mulumbu
Replaced Morrison to try and give his side something more upfront but he struggled to make an impact on the game.
Came on for Fortune but couldn't provide the spark the Baggies needed.
