Live Commentary

  • Though they weren't able to maintain it through the whole 90 minutes, Villa's intensity in the first half was very impressive and they will be a tough side to beat this season. Hull looked tired from their European exploits and only really got going in the final 20 minutes. Thanks very much for joining me, Tom Maston, this afternoon.
  • Cheers greet the full-time whistle as Villa hang on to register their first home win of the season. First-half strikes from strike duo Agbonlahor and Weimann secured the points despite Jelavic's header being diverted into his own net by Cissokho late on.
  • 90' + 6'
Villa drive forward through Delph as they chase a third, and after he trades passes with Grealish he almost squeezes a cross in, but Hull can clear.
  • 90' + 4'
We're going to have even more time added on here as Vlaar receives some treatment inside the hosts' box. It looks like he will be able to continue, however.
  • 90' + 3'
Almost an equaliser at the other end now as Aluko skips away from Senderos in the box, but his shot is straight at Guzan who can hold the effort at the second attempt.
  • 90' + 2'
Bent almost seals the points for the hosts as he is slipped in by Westwood, but the former Tottenham man hits his effort across the face of goal.
  • 90' + 1'
The fourth official has signalled there will be five minutes of added time as Guzan picks up a booking for time wasting. Villa hanging on now.
  • 90'
    Yellow Card Bradley Guzan
  • 89'
Robertson wins a corner on the left-hand side, but Brady's ball is poor and Westwood can clear at the near post. Hull running out of time now.
  • 87'
    Yellow Card Stephen Quinn
A third booking in quick succession for Hull as Quinn picks up a yellow card for a very late challenge on Grealish.
  • 85'
    Substitution Gabriel Agbonlahor Darren Bent
Lambert makes his third and final change with Agbonlahor replaced by Bent for the closing stages. Standing ovation after a fine showing from the striker.
  • 84'
    Yellow Card Ahmed El Mohamady
Grealish is becoming a bit of a target here as Elmohamady brings him down on the left-hand touchline, and the wing-back goes into the book for the foul.
  • 82'
    Yellow Card Nikica Jelavic
Some trouble for Clattenburg to sort out as Grealish is brought down cynically by Jelavic. Once the two teams have been seperated the striker is booked for his part in the incident.
  • 80'
GOOD SAVE! All happening now as Livermore turns onto his right-foot around 25 yards from goal before hitting a curling effort that Guzan has to stretch to tip over the crossbar. Top stop from the USA goalkeeper.
  • 79'
At the other end Delph skips past Dawson before hitting an effort across McGregor, but his shot is just off-target and Hull can breathe again.
  • 78'
Brady swings over a deep cross from the left-hand side, and McShane is offered too much space to get a header in on goal, but his looping effort lands on the roof of the net.
  • 77'
All of a sudden Hull believe they can take at least a point from this game, and they have a new sense of urgency in their play. This could be an awkward 15 minutes for the home side.
  • 75'
    Substitution Kieran Richardson Jack Grealish
That brings to an end Villa's run of clean sheets, and Lambert has now made a change as Richardson is replaced by Grealish.
  • 74'
    Assist Stephen Quinn
  • 74'
    Goal Nikica Jelavic
GOAL!!! CISSOKHO PUTS THE BALL IN HIS OWN NET! A lifeline for Hull as Brady whips a ball into the box that Jelavic rises to meet. The Croatian's header may be going in, but Cissokho makes sure by diverting it past Guzan.
  • 73'
Villa's attacking intent has diminished as the half has worn on, but they still look fairly solid as Hull press for a goal of their own. Guzan is still yet to make a save of note.
  • 71'
    Substitution Tom Huddlestone Sone Aluko
Hull make their third and final change as Huddlestone is replaced by Aluko for the final 20 minutes.
  • 70'
Quinn does well to squeeze a cross into the Villa area from the left, but Vlaar is able to get across Jelavic and head clear. Yet another fine showing from the Netherlands man today.
  • 68'
Hull manage to work the ball out to Rosenior on the right-hand side, but the substitute's first-time effort is always heading over the crossbar. Villa closing in on 250 minutes without conceding a league goal this season.
  • 66'
Delph springs an attack from midfield as he dances past a couple of challenges, but the move comes to nothing as Richardson's ball into the box flies straight out of play.
  • 64'
    Substitution Charles N'Zogbia C. Sánchez
Lambert makes his first change of the afternoon as Sanchez comes on to replace N'Zogbia in midfield.
  • 63'
A break in play here as the home fans refuse to give the ball back to Rosenior as he waits to take a throw-in. Eventually a new ball is found, and an Aston Villa supporter will have a souvenir to take home with them.
  • 61'
Hull are certainly showing more urgency as we enter the final third of the match, but they are still to force Guzan into a meaningful save. Their lack of firepower without Long is plain for all to see here.
  • 59'
The game has certainly become much more open since the break as Hull look to find a way back into this one. That may create more space for the likes of N'Zogbia and Agbonlahor, and Villa will be confident of more goals before the final whistle.
  • 57'
    Substitution Thomas Ince Robbie Brady
The visitors make their second change as Brady, who scored twice against Lokeren in midweek, replaces the disappointing Ince.
  • 56'
Hull are certainly enjoying much more possession in the second period after switching to a 4-5-1 formation. Rosenior and Elmohamady are linking particularly well on the right-hand side.
  • 54'
Huddlestone whips a free-kick in from the left that causes problems in the Villa defence. Cissokho's attempted clearance bobbles into the six-yard box, and Vlaar has to be alert to avert the danger.
  • 52'
Hull have looked to get Jelavic in behind on a number of occasions with long balls, but the former Everton man isn't the type of striker to run beyond the defence. In turn that has meant Guzan has had plenty of fielding to do inside his area today.
  • 50'
Hull's defence is all at sea again as Agbonlahor and Weimann force Dawson into a rushed clearance, and Richardson almost takes advantage as he fires a long-range effort over the crossbar.
  • 48'
Villa have come back out the traps with more goals on their mind, and they almost grab one straight away as Senderos meets Westwood's ball into the box, but the defender's header is held by McGregor low to his left.
  • 46'
    Substitution Curtis Davies Liam Rosenior
Hull have made a change at the break with Rosenior replacing captain Davies. Villa kick-off and we are off for the second half...
  • The teams are beginning to make their way back onto the field for the second half, and we are almost ready to get back underway...
  • Hull, meanwhile, just haven't got going, and with Bruce's gameplan of keeping it tight and trying to nick a goal on the break out of the window, he may look to change things up for the second half. I'll be back in ten minutes for the second period.
  • That is the last action of the first half and it is a very satisfied Villa Park that rises to hail the home side. Goals from Agbonlahor and Weimann separate the sides, and on another day they could have been three or four goals to the good.
  • 45' + 2'
Better from Hull as Quinn finds Huddlestone 25 yards from goal, but his shot is deflected wide of the post, with the resulting corner cleared by Agbonlahor.
  • 45' + 1'
Some concern here for the hosts as Guzan stays down following a challenge from Dawson, but it looks as if he will be able to continue. The home side do have a very able deputy in the shape of Given if they require him.
  • 45'
Ince almost finds a way through for the visitors, but Vlaar comes across to mop up the danger and make sure the former Liverpool trainee couldn't get into the area.
  • 43'
OFF THE POST! Almost a superb third for the hosts as Westwood hits the set-piece with power and it thuds into McGregor's right-hand post. That would have been a superb goal had it gone in.
  • 42'
    Yellow Card Curtis Davies
Davies picks up the first booking of the afternoon as he trips Delph as the midfielder threatened to jink his way through the entire Hull defence. Villa have a free-kick on the left 20 yards from goal...
  • 40'
GOOD SAVE! Almost all over as Agbonlahor gets clear of Dawson in the box, and McGregor does well to keep the striker's effort out with his feet. All too easy for the the hosts.
  • 38'
Hull just haven't got going as yet and defensive errors have cost them. Dawson has arguably been at fault for both goals and seems to be struggling to adapt to playing three at the back.
  • 36'
    Assist Kieran Richardson
  • 36'
    Goal Andreas Weimann
GOAL!!! WEIMANN DOUBLES VILLA'S LEAD! Superb from the hosts after Dawson carelessly gives the ball away on the edge of his area. Richardson is allowed space to slide a low cross in from the left, and Weimann slots home from 10 yards. Too easy for Villa.
  • 35'
Suddenly the home side have come to life again, with Cissokho heavily involved on the left-hand side. No real efforts on goal as yet, though.
  • 33'
Half-hearted appeals for a penalty from Hull as pinball in the box leads to Westwood bringing the ball down on his chest. It then bounced onto his arm, but referee Clattenburg probably got that one right.
  • 31'
In fact Huddlestone hits a low effort goalwards, and a deflection off Weimann takes it narrowly wide of the post with Guzan beaten. That's the closest the visitors have come thus far.
  • 30'
Opportunity for Hull here as Delph brings down McShane 35 yards from goal. Huddlestone will be looking to find the likes of Davies and Dawson who have made their way up from the back...
  • 28'
Delph finds space 25 yards from goal and lines up a shot, but his execution is poor and he drags it harmlessly wide with his left foot.
  • 26'
Vlaar and Senderos' physical presences are meaning Jelavic and Ince are struggling to make much of an impact in the final third for Hull. Bruce may look to Sagbo later in the match if that pattern continues.
  • 24'
The game has entered something of a lull as Hull look to exert some sort of control and build patiently as they search for an equaliser. Villa's intensity has dropped somewhat since Agbonlahor's opener.
  • 22'
Hull's defensive line don't seem as if they quite understand where one another is at times, with Davies and Dawson having some stern words with each other on a number of occasions. Villa will be hoping to take advantage of the confusion.
  • 20'
Better from Hull as first Quinn and then Elmohamady swing balls into the box, but both crosses are too heavy and Guzan is able to control the situation with a good catch from the latter.
  • 18'
Huddlestone has been unable to stamp his authority on the match as yet, and he is key to everything that Hull usually do well. At present Westwood and Delph are controlling matters in the middle of the park.
  • 16'
That goal is reward for the increased endeavour Villa have shown in these early stages, with the hosts enjoying 70 percent of possession. Hull need to get tighter and pressure the ball much more.
  • 14'
    Assist Andreas Weimann
  • 14'
    Goal Gabriel Agbonlahor
GOAL!!! AGBONLAHOR BREAKS THE DEADLOCK! A poor touch from Jelavic allows N'Zogbia time to find Weimann, who in turn plays in Agbonlahor, and the striker is able to turn and fire into the bottom corner. No chance for McGregor.
  • 12'
Bruce has certainly sent his side out to keep things tight, with all 11 men getting themselves behind the ball when Villa find themselves in possession. This could be a turgid affair if the hosts cannot find a way through.
  • 10'
Hull certainly look dangerous on the break, and only a poor ball from Jelavic stops Quinn from breaking into the area. Instead the midfielder must retrieve the ball before his cross is deflected into Guzan's path, and the goalkeeper can catch under no pressure.
  • 8'
Delph is certainly looking to get involved and fire balls into the path of Weimann and Agbonlahor. The midfielder could make his international debut this week, and he certainly looks ready for it if these early touches are anything to go by.
  • 6'
Jelavic makes his first real impact on the game as a fine diagonal ball finds the Croatia striker, and as he looks to find Ince breaking through the middle, Senderos has to be alert to clear the danger on the edge of the area.
  • 4'
The hosts seem satisfied to keep possession in defence and play patiently with Hull sitting back in their own half. Plenty of early touches for the likes of Vlaar and Senderos at the heart of the home backline.
  • 2'
Villa launch the first meaningful attack as Weiman feeds Delph, but the midfielder couldn't celebrate his England call-up as he fired over the bar from a tight angle.
  • 1'
Hull kick-off and we are underway...
  • The pre-match niceties are over and we are almost ready to get underway...
  • The two teams make their way out onto the pitch and there are again plenty of empty seats visible around Villa Park. Not the best atmosphere there's ever been at this famous old ground.
  • There are just over five minutes until kick-off, and this is set to be a very competitive encouter as both sides look to get early points on the board.
  • With just over 33 hours until the close of the transfer window, Bruce still has plenty to do at Hull if they are to replace the departed Shane Long. A move for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes failed to materialise, and now they desperately need a striker to support Nikica Jelavic if they are to stave off the threat of relegation this campaign.
  • There are just over ten minutes until kick-off, and it will be interesting to see how many fans are at Villa Park this afternoon. It was noticeable how many empty seats there were during last week's match against Newcastle, but if results continue to improve there may well be full houses in the Midlands sooner rather than later.
  • Hull hand a debut to Michael Dawson following his arrival from Tottenham earlier this week, with the England international replacing the suspended James Chester in a back three. That is the only alteration from the side that drew with Stoke, as Robbie Brady must make do with a place on the bench despite scoring twice in midweek.
  • Lambert names an unchanged side from the Villa outfit that drew with Newcastle in their last league outing, meaning new signing Carlos Sanchez must wait for his first Premier League start.
  • Hull City subs: Harper, Bruce, Rosenior, Meyler, Aluko, Brady, Sagbo.
  • Hull City: McGregor; McShane, Davies, Dawson, Robertson; Elmohamady, Quinn, Huddlestone, Livermore, Ince; Jelavic.
  • Aston Villa subs: Given, Baker, Grealish, Cole, Sanchez, Bacuna, Bent.
  • Aston Villa: Guzan; Hutton, Vlaar, Senderos, Cissokho; Westwood, Delph; N'Zogbia, Weimann, Richardson; Agbonlahor.
  • Before we go any further, let's take a look at the two line-ups for today's clash...
  • Hull too have picked up four points from their opening two fixtures as they followed up an opening day win at QPR with a draw against Stoke City. A 2-1 win over Lokeren on Thursday wasn't enough to keep them in the Europa League, however, and Steve Bruce will have to pick his side up from that disappointment for today's encounter.
  • With chairman Randy Lerner looking to sell the club over the summer, plenty of uncertainty surrounded Aston Villa in pre-season, but after picking up four points from their opening two matches against Stoke City and Newcastle United, those who predicted they would be relegated are re-writing their predictions. The Villains are yet to concede a league goal this season, and though they lost to Leyton Orient in the Capital One Cup, there is certainly a positive vibe around Villa Park.
  • Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Premier League encounter between Aston Villa and Hull City. Paul Lambert's men have surprised many with their encouraging start to the season, and now face a Tigers outfit who were knocked out of the Europa League in midweek. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you through all the action from Villa Park.
