Aggregate 1 - 1, APOEL win 4 - 3 on penalties
That is it from me, (sadly). I've been Mohammed Ali, and thank you for joining me for a dramatic end to this Champions League tie. Stay with Goal.com for the match report, reactions and the continuation of Champions League LIVE! with reaction from Barcelona's thumping win against Bayer Leverkusen. Until next time, good night!
Adulation for APOEL Nicosia, who started their European journey in July 2011 in Albania, and now mix it up with Barcelona, AC Milan and Benfica who have qualified for the last eight too. Cypriot football hits new hights as Ligue 1 disappointment continues.
It's sparked a pitch invasion on the touchline! WHAT DRAMA!!! APOEL NICOSIA MOVE INTO THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE! LYON ARE OUT!
AND HE MISSES!!!! ELATION!!!!! APOEL NICOSIA ELIMINATE LYON AND PROGRESS INTO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!! WHAT A SIGHT!!
Michel Bastos to take Lyon's fifth.....if he misses.............
TRICKOVSKI.........................................DOWN THE MIDDLE, AND IN!! Superb penalty. APOEL lead 4-3. And within sight!!!
Alexandre Lacazette up next...............SAVED!!!!!!!!!!!! WONDERFUL SAVE CHIOTIS!!!
Alexandrou!!! Rifles the ball straight down the middle, low and hard! 3-3!!!!
BAFETIMBI GOMIS........................................Oooohhh WENT THE RIGHT WAY, BUT IN!!! Very good penalty again. Lyon lead 3-2!
Nuno Morais up next.........................slams it in past Lloris! Great penalty 2-2.
It's Lisandro Lopez next!...IT'S HIT THE POST!! AND TRICKLES IN OFF THE GOALKEEPER'S BACK!!! OHHH WHAT DRAMA!!! 2-1 Lyon!
Ailton up next, can he atone for his poor pefromance tonight?............... Wonderful penalty 1-1!!! Sent Lloris the wrong way
It's Kim Kallstrom, set-piece specialist to take the penalty ............................SCORES! Very cool penalty. 1-0 Lyon.
Fans around the stadium, praying, and hoping. We are about to get underway. Get strapped in, this could be seriously tense.
Cannot fault the APOEL fans inside GSP. Raucous support throughout the 210 minutes of football over the two legs. Huge moment in Cypriot football history!
Well, here we are. Who could've envisaged this? The first Champions League knockout game to head into penalties. APOEL, who started against Albanian opponents in July in qualifying are five kicks away from the quarter-finals!
FULLTIME IN EXTRA TIME: APOEL Nicosia 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais (1-1 aggregate) - PENALTIES TO COME SOON.
LISANDRO!! Found in space, but in truth it was a half-chance. He didn't know much about it either as it deflected off his shin out for a goal-kick.
Dangerous moments for APOEL as Lyon ping it around the box towards Reveilliere on the edge. The cross is heroically cut out however. Seconds remaining.
Opened up for Gonalons, and like Marcinho opts to shoot from distance. Sails over the bar.
MARCINHO!! Launches an effort goalwards, but it flashes over Lloris' bar. Agonising moments from the GSP.
Yellow/Red Gustavo Manduca
RED CARD MANDUCA!! Oh, APOEL's first red card in Europe this season. Manduca gets a second yellow, though his first was to celebrate his goal in the ninth minute.
TRICKOVSKI!! What a chance! Fired over from just outside the box.
Yellow Card Maxime Gonalons
Lacazette embarks on a promising run, though his development is curtailed by the ever-present Paulo Jorge. Meanwhile, APOEL break with Ailton......I'll let you finish that one.
Ailton! Again, has failed to take the right option. The Brazilian, APOEL's hero in the group stage, attempts to take on Cris, but wastes the opportunity.
Kallstrom up in arms after being pegged back for a foul on Marcinho. The referee, from Spain tonight, Alberto Undiano Mallenco has been nothing short of exemplary.
Underway in the second half, almost immediately. 15 minutes to find a hero, or penalties.
105' + 1'
HALF-TIME in EXTRA-TIME: APOEL Nicosia 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais (1-1 aggregate)
105' + 1'
Gomis! On the half-volley, with the left foot, the dreadlocked striker fires an effort from distance. Saved well by the goalkeeper.
Kallstrom, who caused some havoc at the other end, delivers in well, but a poor header from Lacazette wastes the chance. Free-kick to APOEL after Kone fouls Oliveira.
Gomis is penalised for a rash challenge on Paulo Jorge. Lyon, meanwhile attack in numbers, and Jorge is again the defensive lynchpin which nullifies the threat! Corner to Lyon.
KONE! Great save Chiotis! The corner, delievered in by Kallstrom again meets the head of the centre-back, and it is saved almost point-blank by Chiotis. Lisandro, who was in front of the goalkeeper, should've really extended a leg out there.
Free-kick to Lyon, and Kallstrom's delivery is deflected over the bar. The reuslting corner is headed narrowly wide from Maxime Gonalons. Fantastic whip on the delivery.. The referee, however, awards another corner.
Yellow Card Boaventura
Oh, close from Ailton, though the Brazilian really should've taken his chance and have an effort at goal. At the other end, Boaventura lunges late on Lacazette, and is booked.
Substituiton for Lyon, as Alexandre Lacazette, goalscorer in the first leg, comes on for Jimmy Briand.
Both sides struggling to keep possession, a stark contrast to the end of the second half where neither wanted to risk a mistake. Briand's teasing delivery flies over Gomis, and then Chiotis, but it is cleared at the end.
Bastos attempts a low fizzing effort on the edge of the penalty box though it is blocked by Nuno Morais. At the other end, APOEL instigate a counter, though Alexandrou's ball is poor.
Lyon, who have started the extra-time period on the front foot, have been restricted after a string of poor defensive mistakes. Firstly, under pressure Cissokho slips in a troublesome area, and whilst Lyon retrieve the ball, the unsuspecting Gonalons is dispossessed.
Now, the set-piece quality this evening have been poor, despite being awarded in dangerous places. Substitution for APOEL, it's Alexandrou on for the impressive Helder Sousa.
Another Lyon free-kick after Reveilliere, who has been almost invisible tonight being fouled by Helder Sousa. Free-kick is deflected behind, and a corner to Lyon.
Poursaitidies goes in hard on Jimmy Briand. Free-kick taken well by Kim Kallstrom, but it is headed away into space by Nuno Morais.
WE ARE UNDERWAY IN EXTRA-TIME! Away goals rule still in place, so a Lyon goal would almost certainly see them through. Penalties anyone?
90' + 3'
Extra-time to come in this one. Stick around, with the 30 minutes about to start in seconds. Meanwhile, continue to send me your messages via Twitter to @mohammedali_93.
90' + 3'
FULL-TIME - APOEL Nicosia 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais - (1-1 aggregate)
90' + 3'
Oohhh almost from APOEL! Lovely through ball in towards Trickovski who aims a low cross in towards the goal, but it is snuffed out by Lloris.
90' + 2'
Helder Sousa has been one of the better APOEL players tonight as he feeds a team-mate. Poursaitides has to react fast to atone for a minor slip which could've opened the door for Lyon.
90' + 1'
Briand does well to switch play in towards Bastos on the other flank, though the Brazilian's hefty touch sees the defender clear his lines.
Into the final minute of normal time, and THREE added minutes signalled by the fourth official.
AILTON! NO! Wrong option! And the fans are lettign him now just what they think of that too. A slip from Kone allows the Brazilian through, and inexplicably he shoots greedily, straight at Lloris!
Yellow Card Ailton
PENALTY?! NO!! In hindsight, fantastic refeering from Alberto Undiano Mallenco. Akin to Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's penalty appeal last night against Milan, Ailton gets sandwiched between two defenders but dives to the ground. Gets a yellow too.
APOEL keeping posession late on, probing for that chance to catch Lyon out. The fans have been awesome, can they urge on their side?
Free-kick to APOEL. Hugely disappointing, however, from Helder Sousa who pings the ball, but fails to clear the first hurdle that is Gomis.
Ailton displays a lovely bit of skill, with some step-overs, though he cannot manouevre a way past Kone, who clears in time. Eding towards extra-time? Who will be the hero?
STAT ALERT: APOEL have had 8 shots on goal, compared to Lyon's 13, whilst Remi Garde's men edge possession 54% to 46%. Yet they're still trailing.
Bafetimbi Gomis has already made an impact, adding another dimension to the attack, though this time he is kept in check by Paulo Jorge.
Heart in mouths moment for APOEL as Lisandro goes close, testing Chiotis, though 'Licha' is again flagged for offside.
Marcinho da Silva
Poor ball from Manduca on the wing in towards Trickovski. 13 minutes left in this encounter. A goal, any goal would settle it.
Free-kick to Lyon in a central position 30 yards out. Bastos fires it with power, though it flies over the bar. Marcinho coming on for Charalambides.
Attacking changes all round as both sides aim for the jugular. Bafetimbi Gomis, who has five CL goals in his last six comes on for Ederson, and Ivan Trickovski for Solari.
CHIOTIS! WHAT A SAVE! This contest is hotting up. Wonderful header from Lisandro Lopez as Chiotis initially hesistates to come out before coming back into position to perform a fine stop.
SOLARI! WHAT A CHANCE! WHAT A CHANCE! APOEL surge up the field in numbers, but the Argentine's shot is fired inches wide! Excruciating miss there. Should've been 2-0.
Ederson! Wonderful block from Paulo Jorge, who gets his body in the way. A backs to the wall job for APOEL this is becoming, though Ivan Jovanovic's men are creating the pressure!
AILTON! Frustrating. That could've been the game right there! Helder Sousa dinks a delightful through ball into Ailton who gets goalside and past Cris. The Brazilian attempts a cut-back, but the ball is intercepted!
Yellow Card Baky
Bakary Kone is booked for a rough tackle. About 25 minutes left in this one, and the tie is still in the balance.
Lyon caught in possession, and APOEL break at will, with Helder Sousa racing past his marker on the left wing. Crossed in, Charalambides smashes his effort high, wide, and not at all handsome.
Nuno Morais!! Just wide of Lloris' goal. The former Chelsea trainee capitalises on a poor lapse in concentration from a Lyon player, though his first time shot wasn't up to scratch.
Ohh that is poor from Ailton. Fed into space, but he had no options to take, despite space being afforded to the hosts. Does well to hold the ball, but it is eventually lost.
AILTON! At the other end, the Brazilian attempts an effort which comes off the defender. Corner to APOEL, and Lloris is forced to rise high above his defenders to punch the ball away, as it is eventually cleared.
LISANDRO!! Wouldm't have counted anyway, but what a moment for the Argentine. The cross in from the left is perfect, and Lisandro runs in from behind a bamboozled defence to head straight at Chiotis. Better from les Gones.
Bastos cuts in from the left, leaving his marker in his wake with a show of pace, though his fierce effort strikes Ederson without troubling the APOEL defence.
OFF THE BAR!! The free-kick whipped in by Helder Sousa comes off Cissokho's head and crashes off the crossbar for a corner! Lyon breathe a sigh of relief!
Quick succession of fouls, first on Solari, then on Manduca. APOEL have the ball in a very dangerous place on the left hand side. Sousa is over it........
Cissokho whips in a threatening low cross from the left, as the defence holds sway in holding off Briand. Throw-in to the hosts.
Yellow Card Michel Bastos
Yellow Card E. Solari
Esteban Solari is booked, for dissent, one would presume, and so is Michel Bastos. But none for Cris and Marcelo Oliviera.
Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco has a job on his hands, and looks to be issuing yellow cards. Both players still receiving medical attention.
Free-kick is taken, but stopped for a foul on the edge of the area against Ailton. Oliveira lashed out on Cris, with an elbow and a sly kick being traded. Both players are on the floor, and play has been delayed.
Helder Sousa makes progress, with a lovely one two with Ailton, though Kone tracks back to foul the latter. Rough tackling becoming more prevalent in this encounter. Free-kick to APOEL, about 35 metres out.
Jimmy Briand is penalised for a foul on Paulo Jorge. APOEL have started in exactly the way they began the first half, enterpirisng in midfield, and troubling the defensive pairing of Cris and Kone.
Ohh, Lyon potentially in trouble there. A pass back to Lloris is cleared under pressure and only finds an APOEL player. The lofted cross in towards Solari is pulled back for offside.
Underway in the second period! This is incredibly important for both sides, who can land the knockout blow?
APOEL and Lyon fans, I'd like to hear from you. Can the Cypriots hold on and get another and progress towards a maiden quarter-final appearance tonight? Or will Lyon step it up a notch in the second half and spoil the party? Send me your messages via Twitter to @mohammedali_93. I'll be back in 15 minutes.
A dream start for APOEL as early as the ninth minute to draw level on aggregate. Remi Garde won't be happy to see his team concede a goal so easily, both from the initial mistake to allow Charalambides to surge through into the box, and the free shot Manduca was allowed at the far post to tap it in. The Cypriots have enjoyed the better chances, though Lyon have had much more possession and look the more comfortable. All to play for in the next 45.
45' + 1'
HALF-TIME: APOEL Nicosia 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais (1-1 agg.)
One minute injury-time signalled at the end of the first half.
Ailton chases an ambitious long ball into the penalty box, but it is intercepted by Kone who accidentally directs the ball into the body of Cris for a spot of pinball football, though Lloris takes control instead.
Bakary Kone concedes the free-kick forrash tackle on Ailton. Approaching the interval in this one, but APOEL have had the better half in terms of creating chances, and of course Manduca's goal.
SOLARI!! Good save Lloris! The ball is played into the Argentine on the far flank and after intricate control, the striker advances onto goal, It is thwarted by Lloris who does well to get down low to block the shot!
SOLARI! APOEL venture again into the opposition's half, and a superb ball from Manduca from the left sees the Argentine in the box appearing to be pulled down, though there were no penalty appeals. Helder Sousa is later penalised for handball.
EDERSON!! Ohhhh so close! Wonderful whipped ball by Bastos as Ederson runs into space to get a glancing touch which flies agonisingly wide of Chiotis' goal. Really should've done better with that, in truth.
OHHH ITS OFFSIDE! APOEL robbed by the offside flag. Ailton moves a fraction too early to collect the through ball from Charalambides in midfield. It would've almost certainly caused problems for Hugo Lloris at the back.
Corner to Lyon - Gonalons fires an effort goalwards, but it is blocked and clear for the corner. Les Gones building up in this game compared to their nonchalant start at the beginning.
Kim Kallstrom attempts a meek save in towards Chiotis whod oes well to keep hold of the shot.
Did you know? APOEL's European adventure began in July 2011. They beat Skënderbeu Korçë (6–0 agg.), Slovan Bratislava (2–0 agg.) and Wisła Kraków - in which the Cypriots needed an 88th minute winner from Ailton to secure a 3-2 aggregate win. They will be the first team ever to have come from the earliest qualifying round to reach the quarter-finals if they win tonight.
BASTOS! First real chance from Lyon, half an hour in. Lisandro is played into space on the edge of the box, despite offside calls and crosses in towards the Brazilian left winger who rises highest to head the ball, which in turn sails over the bar.
Fantastic tackle by Kone! A mistake from the young centre-back allows Ailton to capitalise and move into a one-on-one situation, though Kone tracks back to perform an expert sliding tackle! Atoned for his mistake there.
CHARALAMBIDES! Lyon on the ropes again, and are almost 2-0 behind. Ailton surges in from the left, finding Manduca who takes a touch of the ball which is meant for Charalambides. The no.10 moves into space before driving the ball into the side-netting, where he really should've found the far post instead!
EDERSON!! Almost a wonderful, and perhaps fluke of a free-kick! The ball is whipped in and swings violently in the air, almost catching out Chiotis who does well to re-adjust and pat the ball away for a corner. The resulting set-piece, taken by Bastos is poor.
Another foul against Ederson, this time by Charalambides. Lyon have a free-kick in a very dangerous area, from the flank.
Bakary Kone surges through the midfield from the back, and after exchanging a one-two with Jimmy Briand, his low pull-back is cleared behind for a corner. Kallstrom to whip one in.......and it is fisted away by Chiotis.
Lyon yet to stamp their authority in this match. Remi Garde's men are being kept well at bay by a resolute Cypriot defence, with the only chance being Bastos' free-kick seconds ago. Level on aggregate, a Lyon goal would do the world of good for their chances.
BASTOS! Good save by Chiotis. The free-kick is low and teasing, with the wall allowing the Brazilian to get the shot away. At a slightly uncomfortable height for Chiotis, the goalkeeper keeps hold of the ball.
Helder Sousa is penalised for a foul on Maxime Gonalons, who is in some pain near the half-way line. The game is briefly delayed as the youngster receives attention. Free-kick to les Gones in a dangerous range. Bastos over it..........
A long goal-kick from Hugo Lloris stretches far and is ultimately cleared for a throw-in. However, a slight hesistancy at the back from Boaventura allowed Briand to attempt an effort, though it was eventually cleared by Paulo Jorge.
Charalambides tries to evade Cissokho on the left wing, though the left-back wins that battle with a well-timed tackle. APOEL creating all the pressure.
Gonalons concedes a fre-kick for a foul on Ailton. Manduca delivers in a testing ball, which Hugo Lloris has to pat away. The attack ultimately fizzles out.
Permutation: As it stands, we are heading into extra-time and penalties. If another goal is scored, this match will definitely end after normal time. APOEL 1-0 Lyon (1-1 aggregate)
Ederson attempts an effort on Chiotis' goal, but it flies harmlessly wide. Oliviera tries to counter the Brazilian, who creates an acrobatic chance though nothing serious came of it in the end.
Yellow Card Gustavo Manduca
An amazing start for the hosts whose goal is met with an absolute roar from the stands. Pitiful defending from Lyon, a fraility which was exposed at the weekend. Manduca is booked for taking his shirt off in the celebration, but who can blame him?
Assist Konstantinos Charalambides
Goal Gustavo Manduca
GOAAAL!!!! WHAT A START FOR APOEL!! A poor defensive mishap from Lyon allows Charalambides to power his way into the box and cross in low towards the far post towards Manduca who fires it in!! It's 1-0 APOEL and 1-1 on aggregate!
Oliveira lunges in on Lisandro, with the referee giving Lyon a free-kick. The free-kick is lofted in towards the box, but it's cut out easily. Quite an edgy start.
Fantastic atmosphere at the GSP, the volume seems to increase as the hosts progress across the field, too! Meanwhile, Manduca momentarily runs offside.
Oliveira goes down from a challenge by Ederson, with the referee awarding a free-kick to the hosts.
Briand takes on Boaventura on the right wing, and gets the better of the full-back, getting a cross in the process. Paulo Jorge holds off Lisandro so that Chiotis can retrieve the ball.
Poursaitides attempts a throw-in, trying to pin-point Esteban Solari, though the ball trickles out for a goal kick,
Lyon attempt a fast start along the wing, but their progress is curtailed by a swift tackle. APOEL keeping possession in the early seconds.
WE ARE UNDERWAY! Lyon kick us off attacking from right to left in their pink European strip.
Certain irregularities ahead of this match. Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco and his entourage suffered a flat tyre en route to the stadium, whilst some individuals broke into the GSP last night to cause some trouble and cut up the pitch. A turbulent build-up!
The teams are coming out of the tunnel, met with the tumult of the fans displaying red and black placards. The roar of the Champions League anthem, and we're almost underway.
Raucous atmosphere inside the GSP stadium. The fans are going crazy on what could be the most special of nights in Cypriot football history. Tonight will see the second biggest attendance at the stadium too!
APOEL and Lyon fans, what do you make of those line-ups? Send me your messages via Twitter to @mohammedali_93.
TEAM NEWS: APOEL leave out Ivan Trickovski on the bench for the second leg after the striker missed the game at the weekend due to a back problem though Esteban Solari takes his place. Helio Pinto is suspended with Gustavo Manduca featuring instead. Lyon leave out Bafetimbi Gomis on the bench, prefering to start with Ederson playing in just behind Lisandro Lopez with the rest of the side unchanged. Dejan Lovren, back from an Achilles injury makes the substitutes.
LYON: Lloris, Cris, Koné, Réveillère, Cissokho, Källström, Ederson, Bastos, Gonalons, Lisandro, Briand SUBS: Vercoutre, Lovren, Dabo, Fofana, Grenier, Lacazette, Gomis.
CONFIRMED TEAM LINE-UPS: APOEL NICOSIA: Chiotis, Paulo Jorge, Oliveira, Poursaitides, Hélder Sousa, William Boaventura, Charalambides, Manduca, Nuno Morais, Aílton, Solari SUBS: Pardo, Kaká, Satsias, Alexandrou, Solomou, Marcinho, Tričkovski.
Lyon have only lost twice on the road since their best result of the semi-finals in 2010, with their most recent away game a 7-1 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in the group stage. Hugo Lloris, the new France captain, is the only player who has played every minute of his side's campaign, Nuno Morais holding that record for the hosts tonight.
Did you know? APOEL are also the second team ever in the Champions League to negotiate three qualifying rounds and the group-stage to qualify for the last 16. The only other team were *then* European champions Liverpool who were eventually eliminated at this stage in 2005-06.
A few stats for you fervent fans out there. APOEL have not scored in the competition for three games, stretching back to November 1 in a 2-1 win over Porto. Obviously, the Cypriots have not won in that period, and Cyprus could be the 16th European nation to provide a quarter-finalist if Jovanovic's men accomplish the unlikely tonight. A huge feat.
Meanwhile, Lyon's Garde has also spoken about his side's chances: "We have a 1-0 advantage and we need to build on it. We need to not only defend but also to score," Garde stated during a press conference. We have enough quality in the side to achieve both those targets. We are strong going forward but we also need to be strong at the back.
Ivan Jovanovic, coach of APOEL has given his thoughts ahead of arguably the biggest match in the club's history: "We have nothing to lose and everything to gain," he said. "The prize makes this match one of the most important in the club's history. All APOEL fans should wake up feeling proud on Wednesday. What this team has achieved in Europe is incredible and I am sure they will be firmly by our side once again."
It's a whole different story for Remi Garde's stuttering side. On an alarming run of form in the league, Lyon have won just one of their last eight games, and have not scored in two of the three games since the first-leg victory, the other being an enthralling 4-4 draw against PSG. That has seen les Gones slip to seventh in Ligue 1, and defeat tonight would have a serious impact on the club as they bid to make the quarter-finals for only the second time since 2006.
APOEL Nicosia head into this match in reasonable form with two straight wins, most recently a 4-1 victory over Cypriot league strugglers Ermis at the weekend. Ivan Jovanovic's men sit third in the table. Having only managed just ONE shot on goal in the first leg, the Cypriots have work to do tonight. The omens look good too, given APOEL's European home form, with just one defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six, though they had already qualified by then. In August 2011, the Nicosia-based club recovered from a 1-0 first leg defeat against Wisla to progress 3-2 in the Cypriot capital. Any odds of that happening tonight?
Right then, let's re-cap from the first leg at the Stade Gerland on Valentine's Day. Les Gones hold a slender 1-0 advantage, thanks to Alexandre Lacazette's goal early into the second half. However, Remi Garde's men could've - and really should've - grabbed one or two more. APOEL's defensive abilities showed that night, and had it not been for Paulo Jorge's timely interceptions, this match would've merely been a formality.
I'm Mohammed Ali, and I'll be guiding you through tonight's clash on the Mediterranean island. As always, you can get involved throughout the game and send me your predictions, comments, opinions and more via Twitter to @mohammedali_93. Cracking.
Good evening, and welcome to Goal.com's LIVE commentary of the Champions League first knockout round, second-leg between APOEL Nicosia and Olympique Lyonnais from GSP in Nicosia. Get strapped in folks, this could be a tantalising fixture with the tie still in the balance after the first leg three weeks ago. Confirmed team line-ups to come shortly.
