Live Commentary

  • The Spurs players celebrate in front of the travelling support, while Friedel, who was booed throughout the match, does his best to wind up the home crowd. It is 25 days since a player other than Bale scored for Spurs, but what a time for Dembele to grab his second goal in a Lilywhite shirt. Inter Milan await Tottenham in the next round.
  • The Stade de Gerland outfit were compact, disciplined and extremely organised, but couldn't quite hang onto their slim lead. Tottenham were the more proactive, dynamic side, even if they lacked vision and intelligence when trying to break down the hosts.
  • FULL-TIME!! That's it, it's all over. Tottenham are through to the last 16 thanks to Dembele's late, late strike. Lyon had defended brilliantly, and Spurs struggled to break down the deep, organised Les Gones defence until their Belgian midfielder blasted the ball past Vercoutre in the 90th minute.
  • 90' + 3'
Tottenham are wisely holding onto the ball by Lyon's corner flag, wasting even more time.
  • 90' + 2'
Now it is Tottenham's turn to waste time. Lyon have a brief chance to get forward, as Grenier lobs a pass for Briand to chase, but the forward is offside.
  • 90' + 1'
There will be three minutes of added time.
  • 90'
    Assist Gareth Bale
  • 90'
    Goal Mousa Dembele
GOAL!!! They've huffed and puffed but failed to find a way to break Lyon down. But with time running out, Dembele dribbles past Gonalons, finds a yard of space and then thunders an effort towards goal from 20 yards that flies into the far corner of the net. What a strike.
  • 88'
Bale finds a yard of space and drives towards goal. His right-footed shot is pulled well wide of goal, but Dempsey almost gets his foot to the shot which would have diverted the ball towards goal.
  • 86'
Lyon have all ten men behind the ball now, and Tottenham just can't find a way through. Les Gones are defending with tremendous discipline.
  • 85'
    SubstitutionScott Parker Jake Livermore
  • 84'
Lyon hold onto the ball well, conserving possession. Vertonghen wins the ball back and Spurs come forward, but lack any kind of tempo or intent and Assou-Ekotto eventually gives the ball away.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionBafetimbi Gomis Jimmy Briand
  • 82'
Tottenham are really struggling to break down Lyon now, with the home side defending well and denying Spurs any space. Dempsey attempts an optimistic shot from 30-yards that sails harmlessly wide of the near post.
  • 80'
Gomis and Malbranque link well as Lyon break against Tottenham's high line, but Vertonghen is able to boot the ball clear.
  • 79'
Substitute Ghezzal wins a corner for Lyon, which the hosts are in no rush to take, and Bale heads the ball away. Spurs have a chance to counter, but Umtiti makes an important interception.
  • 78'
Adebayor trick his way into the box and pulls the ball back for Dempsey, but the American pokes the ball wide of the near post. Good work from the Togo striker there.
  • 76'
Umtiti handles the ball near the half-way line, and Bale floats in the resulting free-kick which is headed behind for a corner. The subsequent set-piece is headed behind by Gonalons for another corner, from which Dempsey, making a late run from the edge of the box, powers a header over the bar.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Samuel Umtiti
  • 74'
    SubstitutionLewis Holtby Gylfi Sigurdsson
  • 74'
    SubstitutionLisandro Lopez Rachid Ghezzal
  • 74'
Gallas intercepts the ball ahead of Gomis and carries the ball forward, but eventually he overruns the ball and Lyon claim possession when Sigurdsson, on in place of Holtby, brings down Gonalons.
  • 73'
The away side continue to huff and puff against Lyon's deep defence. Holtby tries to cut inside but is shrugged off the ball by Gonalons, who drives forward, but the counter fizzles out.
  • 71'
Spurs are giving the ball away far too frequently. Lyon recover the ball after an aimless crossfield pass, and Malbranque ambles down the right flank, but his cross dribbles into the arms of Friedel.
  • 69'
Tottenham are piling on the pressure now, controlling possession and searching for a goal. Lyon are operating even more defensively now, with the dangerous Lacazette replaced by ex-Spurs midfielder Malbranque.
  • 67'
Bale picks up the ball in space on the edge of the box and fires a shot towards goal which bends and curls in the air and almost catches out Vercoutre, who once again opts to punch the ball away in unorthodox fashion.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionAaron Lennon Clint Dempsey
  • 65'
OFF THE BAR! Tottenham go up the other end and Adebayor tries an overhead cross which veers towards goal and loops onto the crossbar. The ball then bounces to Lennon, who appears to be taken down inside the box, but agains the referee isn't interested in the appeals for a penalty.
  • 65'
    SubstitutionAlexandre Lacazette Steed Malbranque
  • 65'
    Yellow Card William Gallas
  • 64'
Gonalons brings down Bale and is rightly booked. The Welshman's subsequent free-kick is punched away by Vercoutre.
  • 63'
    Yellow Card Maxime Gonalons
  • 63'
CHANCE! Gonalons plays a cute dinked pass behind the defence for Gomis, who is clean through. Friedel rushes from his line but his clearance only finds Lacazette on the edge of the box. The winger takes the ball around Friedel and falls to the ground, but the American shot-stopper made no contact and the referee rightly ignores protests for a penalty.
  • 62'
Lacazette is finding an awful lot of room down the right flank, with Assou-Ekotto playing very high up the pitch.
  • 61'
Tottenham have lost a little of their early second half promise, with Adebayor's woeful first touch re-finding him. Vercoutre has yet to be properly tested.
  • 59'
From the resulting set-piece, Gomis is able to thunder a powerful effort towards goal that is bravely blocked by Assou-Ekotto.
  • 58'
Walker brings down Lopez and the referee awards a free-kick. It was very soft indeed, with the Argentine playing for it. Walker needs to be careful here, he's already on a yellow card.
  • 57'
Tottenham win two corners in quick succession. The first is headed away by Gomis with Gallas ready to pounce, and the second is palmed away by Vercoutre under his own crossbar.
  • 56'
Umtiti finds space and whips in a cross which is cleared by Vertonghen. Lyon recover the ball and the left-back fires in another delivery, which this time falls to Grenier on the edge of the box after Assou-Ekotto failed to clear the ball. The playmaker hits a low shot towards goal which Friedel pushes away.
  • 54'
Grenier plays a slide-rule pass for Lopez and the Argentine is clean through on goal, but the linesman's flag is raised for offside. Replays show he was actually onside there.
  • 52'
Tottenham are growing in confidence now and beginning to find ways to break Lyon down, but must make sure they take their chances.
  • 50'
Spurs immediately counter with Adebayor. The Togo forward races down the right flank and plays a perfect cross for Bale. The Welshman side-foot volleys the ball first time, but sends the ball inches wide of the near post. So close!
  • 50'
Reveillere bursts forward and and squares the ball for Lopez. The Argentine feigns to shoot, which Gallas falls for, but Walker is able to make a block.
  • 48'
The second half has started in much the same manner as the first, with Lyon defending very deep and looking to counter-attack. A mistake from Assou-Ekotto allows Les Gones to break, but the final ball for Lacazette is just too heavy.
  • 46'
Tottenham get the second half underway. There are no changes for either side.
  • Tottenham need to introduce more movement, adventure and penetrative passing, with Parker and Dembele particularly conservative. Villas-Boas has few options to change the game on his bench, while Lyon have posed a threat on the break. The second half is finely poised.
  • Barring Holtby's late effort that rattled the post, Spurs have not threatened the Lyon goal and have struggled to penetrate the home side's deep, organised defence. Since taking the lead, Les Gones have looked content to simply defend their slender lead.
  • HALF-TIME! It's been a hugely frustrating half for Tottenham, who have struggled to break down the home side and conceded a soft goal from a set-piece. Lyon have defended very well, packing the midfield and denying Spurs the space in behind that their speedsters thrive in.
  • 45'
OFF THE POST!! Holtby picks up the ball on the edge of the area and fires a shot at goal. It looks a tame effort, trickling towards goal, but Vercoutre is forced to get down low and push the ball onto the post. Close!
  • 43'
Gomis holds up the ball really well, turning Gallas and bursting towards the opposition box. Lopez gets up in support of the French striker and fires in a cross which falls to Lacazette, whose half-volley forces a good save from Friedel.
  • 41'
That is brilliant from Bale. The Welshman picks the ball up in his own half and drives forward, knocking the ball past Lovren and impossibly collecting it. He then tricks past the centre-back and Umtiti before winning his side a corner. The resulting set-piece doesn't beat the first man, however.
  • 40'
Lacazette races down the right flank and plays a low, fizzing cross towards Gomis at the back post, but Gallas clears.
  • 38'
It's just not clicking for Tottenham at the moment. Adebayor tries a reverse pass for Holtby that goes straight to Bisevac, before Bale's chipped pass for the German is intercepted by Lovren.
  • 36'
Assou-Ekotto is brought down near the touch-line and the referee awards a free-kick. Bale sends it into the box towards Gallas, but the centre-back is flagged for offside.
  • 35'
Lyon are playing with nine men behind the ball and only Gomis high up the pitch.
  • 34'
Bale switches to the right flank and bursts past Umtiti, but his cross is cleared. Spurs recover possession and Parker tries to thread a pass for Bale, but it's just behind the Welshman.
  • 33'
Friedel's kick hands possession to Lyon, who break down the right with Lacazette. The winger's low cross finds Lopez by the penalty spot, but the Argentine drags his shot wide of the far post.
  • 32'
Lyon are defending brilliantly, denying space and packing their own half. Tottenham are really struggling to break them down.
  • 30'
Gonalons finds Fofana in space on the edge of the Tottenham box, who attempts a tricky first time pass for Gomis, but there's too much power in the pass. Fofana should have done better there.
  • 29'
Assou-Ekotto concedes a needless free-kick which leads to a series of corner kicks for the home side, but Spurs defend each one.
  • 27'
Adebayor out-jumps Bisevac and heads the ball down to Holtby. Spurs have a threatening position, but the referee deems Adebayor to have climbed over the Serbian centre-back and awards a free-kick to Lyon.
  • 26'
Reveillere bursts forward from right-back and lays the ball off to Lopez. The Argentine feeds Grenier on the edge of the box, who smashes a shot over the bar.
  • 24'
    Yellow Card Kyle Walker
  • 24'
Umtiti flicks the ball past Walker and bursts past him, but the Spurs full-back tugs him back. Walker is rightly given a yellow card.
  • 23'
Tottenham haven't got near Vercoutre's goal yet, and are struggling to break down the French side. Parker and Dembele haven't been progressive enough on the ball.
  • 21'
Holtby is looking a little frustrated, constantly outnumbered by Lyon. Fofana robs the German and tries to feed Grenier, but his pass is just over-hit.
  • 19'
Spurs are struggling to find space against a packed Lyon midfield. An overzealous challenge from Parker sees the veteran midfielder follow through heavily on Lopez, but he escapes with just a warning.
  • 17'
    Assist Clément Grenier
  • 17'
    Goal Maxime Gonalons
GOAL!! Lyon are ahead. The home side win a free-kick and it is fired towards the near post by Grenier. Lyon captain Gonalons, unmarked, espcapes his man and heads the ball past a hapless Friedel.
  • 15'
Holtby plays a brilliant first time pass for Adebayor, and the Togo forward is clean-through on goal. But the flag is up for offside. That was a lovely pass from the German.
  • 14'
Holtby wins possession and slides a pass in behind the defence for Lennon. The winger's touch is heavy and Umtiti is able to get back and cover. Lennon is played in a second time, down the left flank, but his cross is hacked away by Lovren.
  • 12'
Lots of familiar faces in the Stade de Gerland crowd tonight, including Gerard Houllier and Zinedine Zidane.
  • 10'
Lopez races down the left flank again, cutting inside of Walker. This time the full-back drags him back and the referee awards a free-kick. Grenier's initial set-piece is blocked by the wall, but he collects the ball and fires in a wonderful cross that is headed straight at Friedel by Lacazette.
  • 9'
Grenier plays a fantastic pass behind Walker for Lopez to chase. The Argentine traps the ball brilliantly and looks to dart past the Tottenham right-back, but he recovers to make a good challenge.
  • 7'
Walker is brought down by Umtiti, giving Bale the chance to fire in a free-kick. Gallas rises highest, but his header harmlessly loops out of play.
  • 6'
Tottenham have their first period of sustained possession, passing the ball around in midfield much to the disdain of the home crowd, who whistle and jeer every touch.
  • 4'
Gomis buys a corner off Vertonghen which is cleared by Adebayor. The ball drops to Lopez on the edge of the box but he fires wide of the near post.
  • 2'
Assou-Ekotto is penalised for a high boot challenge on Gomis. Grenier floats in a deep free-kick which is hooked away by Vertonghen.
  • 1'
Boos ring around the stadium as Friedel touches the ball for the first time. The home crowd wanted to see former favourite son Hugo Lloris.
  • 1'
    Lyon get the match underway.
  • The players are making their way onto the Stade de Gerland pitch and we're just minutes away from kick-off.
  • Emmanuel Adebayor has faced Lyon six times in his career, including the first leg match at White Hart Lane, but has failed to record a single goal or assist. Sunderland are the only team he has faced more times without netting against.
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in Europe this season after seven matches, recording four wins and three draws, but have yet to win away. Their last Europa League away win came against Shamrock Rovers in December 2011.
  • Look away Spurs fans, Lyon have won each of their last four European home games and have averaged more shots on goal, 20.3 per game, than any other side in the Europa League.
  • Tottenham have travelled to Lyon before in the 1967-68 European Cup Winners’ Cup, losing 1-0 – a replica of that scoreline tonight would send the French side through on away goals.
  • Andre Villas-Boas has made just one change to the team that beat Lyon 2-1 last Thursday, with January signing Lewis Holtby replacing Clint Dempsey in an advanced role behind the out-of-form Emmanuel Adebayor. Hugo Lloris is denied a chance to face his former club yet again, with back-up goalkeeper Brad Friedel selected between the sticks. Frenchman William Gallas continues at centre-back, while two-goal first-leg hero Gareth Bale lines up on the left wing.
  • Lyon stick with the same side that hammered Bordeaux 4-0 on Sunday, which featured just one change from the XI that lost at White Hart Lane. Former Tottenham midfielder Steed Malbranque is the man to miss out, with Clement Grenier – who grabbed two goals and an assist against Les Girondins – replacing the 33-year-old. Samuel Umtiti, who scored an incredible away goal, remains at left-back while Les Gones’ topscorer, Bafetimbi Gomis, continues in attack.
  • Tottenham: Friedel; Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Parker, Dembele; Lennon, Holtby, Bale; Adebayor. Subs: Lloris, Naughton, Dawson, Caulker, Dempsey, Sigurdsson, Livermore.
  • Lyon: Vercoutre; Reveillere, Bisevac, Lovren, Umtiti; Gonalons, Fofana; Lacazette, Grenier, Lisandro; Gomis. Subs: Lopes, Kone, Dabo, Ferri, Malbranque, Ghezzal, Briand.
