Live Commentary

  • Thank you for joining me for another cracking cup tie. The draw for the quarter-finals are coming up later tonight. Stay with us at for all the latest!
  • After a poor opening 45 minutes, the game sprung into life. Bale gave his side the lead with a rasping strike, only for Norwich to score two in three minutes to turn the tie on it's head. And we even had time for Dempsey to miss a penalty a minute later. Madness.
  • 90' + 5'
And that's full-time! Norwich advance to the quarter-finals!
  • 90' + 4'
Bale desperately sends a cross in that Bunn parries only as far as Falque, but the youngster's attempt at a curled effort towards the far corner ends up in row Z. The Norwich fans are whistling for the final whistle.
  • 90' + 3'
It is all hands to the deck now for Spurs as Dawson rifles a shot in from 18 yards that Bunn does well to save. They are running out of time to find an equaliser.
  • 90' + 1'
And now Dempsey is being taken from the field of play after a nasty collision with Bunn. There is four allocated minutes of injury-time, but more will be played now.
  • 90'
    SubstitutionKyle Walker Jermain Defoe
Defoe is brought on to try and salvage extra time for Spurs... but we are into added time.
  • 89'
BUNN SAVES! The goalkeeper is Norwich's hero as he guess right to save Dempsey's penalty. In truth, the American's spot-kick was far too close to Bunn.
  • 88'
    Yellow Card Mark Bunn
  • 88'
PENALTY TO SPURS!! Wow. Tierney cannot get anywhere near Walker and trips the right-back into inside the area. Dempsey steps up...
  • 87'
    Goal Simeon Jackson
GOAL! Norwich take the lead!! Two quick-fire goals and this tie has been turned on his head. Snodgrass sends in a fine free-kick delivery that Holt heads straight at Lloris. But, unfortunately for the goalkeeper, Jackson is there to turn in from a yard.
  • 84'
    Own Goal Jan Vertonghen
GOAL! Norwich equalise and it's super-sub Tettey involved! The hosts swing in a cross, which Spurs only only as far the Tettey and his first-time effort appears to be going wide until Vertonghen's wild swing on his boot sends it past Lloris.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionAndrew Surman Grant Holt
Final change for Norwich as Hughton brings on his third striker in the form of Holt in place of Surman.
  • 81'
Norwich are still in this game, without question, and again come close as Tetty - remember the fact I told you earlier - spins away from Walker and into the area, but he takes the ball too far and Lloris is able to rush out and claim.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionThomas Carroll Jan Vertonghen
Second change for Spurs as Vertonghen comes on to replace Carroll in a holding-midfield role.
  • 78'
Oh, that's a waste. Bale's first effort is straight at the wall and the second one, on the rebound, bounces harmlessly through to Bunn.
  • 77'
Sigurdsson, who has been quiet for Spurs this evening, wins a free kick 30 yards out in line with the centre of the goal. Bale is steadying himself...
  • 76'
Another chance for Norwich as they win a free kick near the touchline 30 yards from goal. Snodgrass is again the man to send the ball in but this time fails to find a man.
  • 73'
Norwich win a corner that Snodgrass whips in. His deliveries have been spot on all game and this one is no different. Morison gets the flick on but there is no-one at the far post, so Caulker heads clear.
  • 71'
Best chance of the game for Norwich as Snodgrass lays the ball off for Howson to hit it from 25 yards. Lloris does well make a low save down to left left.
  • 70'
A little tid bit from Oli Platt at Carrow Road: "Alexander Tettey is yet to lose a game for Norwich."
  • 68'
    SubstitutionJacob Butterfield Simeon Jackson
  • 68'
    SubstitutionDavid Fox Alexander Tettey
Double substitution for Norwich as Hughton goes all 'kitchen sink' on us. Fox and Butterfield are replaced by Tettey and Jackson.
  • 66'
    Goal Gareth Bale
GOAL! Bale gives Spurs the lead! And it's been coming. The winger picks the ball up some 35 yards out, turns sharply and skips past two weak challenges before rifling a right-foot shot past Bunn to break the deadlock.
  • 63'
Spurs are slowing turning the screw here, with Carroll throwing in another cross that Norwich struggle to clear.
  • 61'
Spurs win another corner - their fifth of the game - but, despite a change of taker with Huddlestone, the outcome is the same as it is cleared with ease by Norwich.
  • 59'
Falque is finding much more luck coming in from the wings this half, and nearly produces the goods with a clever cut inside and shot from the edge of the area that Bunn has to claw out of the top corner. A fine shot by the game's most impressive player so far.
  • 57'
Another shot of Hughton, who still looks miserable but Villas-Boas, on the other hand, looks pretty happy with his team's showing so far.
  • 55'
And Spurs come straight back through Bale, who smacks an angled shot from inside the area straight at Bunn in the Norwich goal. The focus has to be on yet another great cross by Falque to create the chance. He has got a great left foot.
  • 54'
However, good work from Surman see the Norwich man wiggle his way past Walker and Dawson and into the area, but he cannot get the ball out of his feet and the chance is gone.
  • 53'
Spurs have scored in every Premier League game so far this season, so chances of them finally finding a way through a high. Norwich are dealing with them well so far though.
  • 51'
Carroll takes the corner but it is immediately cleared for another. Second time lucky and Norwich clear at the first attempt.
  • 50'
Falque, who has impressed so far tonight, collects a shortly taken free kick from Huddlestone to whip another fine cross into the area that Turner is forced to clear for a corner...
  • 48'
Snodgrass takes the corner and finds the head of Morison, the forward seems to have guided the ball looping into Lloris' top left-hand corner but the referee calls for a foul on the goalkeeper.
  • 47'
Great chance for Norwich right at the start of the second period as Morison and Surname play a one-two on the edge of the Spurs area to free the latter, only for Caulker to dive in with a fine clearing challenge to concede a corner...
  • 46'
    SubstitutionJake Livermore Tom Huddlestone
One change for Tottenham as Livermore (who appeared to pick up a knock late in the first half) is replaced by Huddlestone.
  • 46'
And Spurs get us back underway!
  • The teams are back out for the second half. We are all set to get back underway here.
  • So, Spurs the more menacing team without getting out of second gear. Norwich seemed content with soaking up any pressure and trying to mount a counter-attack, with little-to-no success. This game desperately needs a goal.
  • 45' + 2'
And the referee calls to a close a fairly drab first half after just over a minute of added time.
  • 45'
Just as we enter stoppage time, Norwich go the closest they've been all half with Howson sending a dipping shot from 30 yards the wrong side of Lloris' right-hand post. The goalkeeper was scrambling.
  • 43'
Another well-worked Spurs build-up is ended with Dempsey failing to get a decent connection on the ball, this time arrowing his shot straight at Bunn.
  • 42'
As with the majority of Spurs' games recently, they are struggling to break down a sturdy defence in the opening 45 minutes.
  • 39'
    Yellow Card Gareth Bale
Tierney is down and clutching his shin after a late challenge from Bale. The Spurs man is duly booked as the defender hops around and winces as he tries to put weight on his not-at-all bruised leg.
  • 36'
Norwich seem to be lacking the urgency on show during the opening 20 minutes, but the game is becoming more open as we approach half-time.
  • 34'
Another long-distance shot from Bale and it's a firecracker (hey, it's nearly November 5, give me a break) of an effort as he skips past two challenges and lets fly from 30 yards only to hit the side netting of Bunn's near post.
  • 32'
The first real fiesty challenge of the game as Fox fells Livermore near the centre circle. Caulker restarts with a simple knock back to Lloris.
  • 30'
Bale is down in the aftermath of that attack but does seem to be OK after a few seconds with his head buried in the turf.
  • 29'
More fine work from Spurs' midfielders as Falque sends a glorious dipping volley from the right flank towards an onrushing Dempsey at the far post, but the American is denied by Bunn. The rebound comes out for Carroll but is dragged wide.
  • 27'
Oof, I thought Bale has scored there and so did he. Fine work by Livermore down the Spurs right flank, getting to the byline and ducking past Tierney (who is having a torrid time so far) to drill in a low cross towards the Welshman. Bale tried to beat Bunn with a near-post flick, but ends up sending the ball spinning over the bar.
  • 26'
...Snodgrass takes the corner and puts it straight on Morison's head at the back post, the effort is edging inside the near post only for Lloris to stand his ground in the right place and gather the ball. Good positioning by the goalkeeper.
  • 25'
Norwich come straight back at Spurs and win a corner after Dawson is forced to send Snodgrass' cross behind his own goal...
  • 23'
CLOSE! Bale and Dempsey combine for Spurs' best chance of the game. The throw in is taken quickly and worked across the other side of the pitch. The former easily nips past Tierney and feeds the American inside the area but Dempsey cannot get enough his foot around the ball and sends it flying over the bar.
  • 21'
It's Spurs turn to race up the flanks as Bale's glorious cross-field pass is controlled well by Falque on his chest but, before he can pick up speed, the former Juventus man is sent flying by Bennett. Throw-in.
  • 19'
Norwich work the ball down the right and Surman manages to nick past Naughton, only for Dawson to easily head his cross clear.
  • 18'
A quick shot of Chris Hughton on the sidelines and he looks absolutely miserable, chewing his bottom lip. Penny for your thoughts, Chris?
  • 17'
Best chance of the game so far and it's gone Spurs' way. Tierney fails to deal with Caulker's diagonal ball forward and Bale pounces, controlling the ball in an instant, taking it past Turner and firing a curling effort straight at Bunn. Smart shot, but too close to the goalkeeper.
  • 15'
Neat work near the corner flag between Fox and Butterfield allows the latter to send a ball into the box towards Morison, but Lloris reacts first and comfortably plucks the danger out of the air.
  • 13'
Norwich are nearly gifted a chance to open the scoring by Livermore's poor attempted pass back to his defence. The striker bursts forward into space but is immediately crowded out by three Spurs defenders before Lloris rushes out to collect.
  • 11'
...Falque takes the corner, but his delivery fails to get off the ground let alone beat the first man. Dire.
  • 10'
Spurs growing with confidence after that initial chance, with Carroll next in line to find Dempsey with a cross. Turner turns the ball behind for a corner...
  • 7'
First chance for Spurs as Naughton sends an arrowed cross from the left towards Dempsey inside the area, the American gets up well to connect with the ball but can only send it past the wrong side of the post.
  • 5'
Comical chant for the Spurs fans of "your ground is too big for you" after the vast number of empty seats in the home sections. Norwich react by creating the first real chance of the game, with Snodgrass whipping in a cross towards Morison, but Caulker heads away confidently.
  • 4'
A calm attacking build-up by Spurs is wasted at the crucial moment when Caulker overhits a ball forward towards Naughton to send the ball out for a throw-in.
  • 2'
Tottenham immediately gain possession and allow each player to take a touch. All of the noise is coming from the away end at the moment.
  • 1'
    And Norwich get us underway!
  • Right then, the teams are out here at Carrow Road. We are roughly three minutes away from kick-off. Who will advance to the quarter-finals?
  • More from Mr Platt: "Steven Whittaker is yet to make his competitive debut for Norwich since signing from Rangers in the summer. If he fares well tonight, he can go home very encouraged, because there are not many more intimidating presences than Gareth Bale for right-backs. Bale was an obvious contender to be rested here but gets the start having missed two games for the birth of his baby."

  • Spurs only make the five changes, with Hugo Lloris coming into the side. Kyle Naughton starts against the club he spent a spell on loan at last season.
  • As Oli has stolen my thundrer, I'll be brief with my team news summary. Norwich have made a whopping 10 changes for the visit of the in-form Spurs side. Steven Whittaker is set to make his debut in the highlight.
  • Here is Oli Platt checking in for the first time from Carrow Road: "Good evening from Carrow Road, where both managers have made significant changes to their teams for this Capital One Cup tie. Andre Villas-Boas introduces young Tom Carroll and Jake Livermore to his midfield but does boast the combined firepower of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey, who starts up front. Chris Hughton brings in Jacob Butterfield and Steven Whittaker, who both joined the Canaries in the summer but are yet to play a prominent part in the first team."
  • Tottenham: Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Caulker, Naughton; Livermore, Carroll; Falque, Sigurdsson, Bale; Dempsey Subs: Cudicini, Vertonghen, Smith, Huddlestone, Lennon, Townsend, Defoe
  • Norwich: Bunn, Whittaker, Turner, Snodgrass, Howson, Surman, Fox, Morison, Butterfield, Tierney, R. Bennett. Subs: Rudd, Garrido, Barnett, E. Bennett, Tettey, Holt, Jackson
