Live Commentary

  • That's it from me, thanks for staying with me, Adam Mazrani, and cheers to Tom McKeown at the County Ground for us. It's been a pleasure!
  • Well, where do we start with that one? Villa for the most part were relatively comfortable after two first-half goals from Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor. However, two goals in the last five minutes from Miles Storey looked to be sending the game into extra-time. However, Benteke struck again to send Villa through. A deserved win, just about.
  • FULL TIME: Swindon 2-3 Aston Villa! Swindon couldn't find a reply and Aston Villa are through to the Quarter Finals of the Capital One Cup thanks to two strikes from striker Christian Benteke.
  • 90' + 1'
Into three minutes of stoppage time here.
  • 90' + 1'
GOALL!!!! 3-2 Aston Villa!!! Second goal of the night for Benteke! Paul Lambert is celebrating with some style here and as he should because it was a very good finish from the Belgian, collecting the ball in the box and absolutely drilling the ball past Foderingham in the Swindon net.
  • 90'
    Goal Christian Benteke
  • 90'
Villa hit the post! Weimann's just cracked a left-footed volley off the post with Foderingham nowhere near it! Let-off for Swindon.
  • 88'
Villa don't want extra time, that much is clear. Agbonlahor's just hit a wild effort that's gone miles over the bar. Paul Lambert must be fuming.
  • 87'
First sniff for Bent, but he just can't reach an Agbonlahor cross. Swindon have to be careful here...
  • 84'
Swindon are pushing for a winner now! A Matt Ritchie shot has just flown over the bar. Paul Lambert's seen enough, he's brought on Darren Bent.
  • 82'
    SubstitutionStephen Ireland Darren Bent
  • 81'
    SubstitutionBarry Bannan Fabian Delph
  • 81'
    Goal Miles Storey
GOALLLLLL!! 2-2!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?! DI CANIO IS RUNNING DOWN THE TOUCHLINE! What a superb goal from Miles Storey again, with the cheekiest of backheels from yet another cross. Think Danny Welbeck against Sweden for England in Euro 2012. What an evening this is turning out to be! Paolo Di Canio - managerial genius?
  • 78'
    Goal Miles Storey
GOALLL!!!!!!! 2-1! Well, this did NOT look on the cards. Arguably deserved though. Swindon finally get a cross in and substitute Miles Storey produces a neat finish, timing his run well to put the ball beyond Shay Given. Game on.
  • 78'
The game looks to be petering out somewhat at the moment. Swindon working as hard as ever but just look to have lost confidence. Villa look comfortable and surely some of these players will be featuring on a more regular basis in the Premier League for the Villans.
  • 77'
    Yellow Card Gabriel Agbonlahor
  • 75'
Ireland is at the heart of everything Aston Villa are doing right this evening. He almost sets up Agbonlahor with a cheeky header from Benteke's cross-field ball but it's well cut out by the Swindon defence.
  • 74'
    SubstitutionJames Collins Miles Storey
  • 73'
Time is starting to run out for the home side here. They've certainly given it everything but their strikers in particular have just lacked the requisite quality to trouble the Villa back line.
  • 70'
Last-gasp defending from Swindon here. Villa threaten first through El Ahmadi and then through Benteke but the big striker's drilled finish is deflected wide. A third goal would put the icing on the cake for Paul Lambert here.
  • 68'
    SubstitutionG. Roberts Louis Thompson
  • 66'
Is that Swindon's best chance of the game gone? Another good cross from wide, again from Matt Ritchie and Gary Roberts has a huge opportunity to bring the home side back into the match but he misses his header and the chance is gone.
  • 64'
Tom McKeown at the County Ground seems to agree: "Things have calmed down here at the County Ground after that promising Swindon spell. The visitors are doing their best to slow the game down and frustrate Di Canio's men. Substitute Andy Williams has been fighting hard up front for Swindon since coming on but isn't getting much service."
  • 63'
Villa taking control once again. Agbonlahor's been a real livewire for Paul Lambert's men and his pass finds the equally impressive Bannan whose shot deflects over the bar.
  • 60'
...and Villa still retain that pace and threat going forward. Weimann's just had a snap-shot that's well blocked by the Swindon defence.
  • 58'
A quiet period in the game now. Both sides trading possession sloppily. The game continues to be played in the Villa half but Swindon just don't seem to have the quality to break the away side down.
  • 55'
Rising pressure from Swindon. Villa have been poor so far in this second half. Their problem seems to be an inability to stop the cross and then an inability to clear their lines properly at times - it just invites the pressure back on from the home side.
  • 52'
Very impressive defending from Vlaar - though I suppose he is a Netherlands international. Again some very good movement from Swindon but Vlaar takes charge of affairs at the back for the away side and thumps a half-opening away.
  • 50'
    SubstitutionPaul Benson Andrew Williams
  • 50'
This time a Swindon attacker DOES make contact with a cross! But Gary Roberts can only put his header over the bar under pressure from Lichaj.
  • 49'
....and again! Ferry with a driving cross which the two Swindon strikers, Collins and Benson both throw themselves at but just can't connect with.
  • 47'
Half chance for Swindon. They've done this a lot tonight, crosses that flash across the face of goal but only just elude onrushing attackers. This time it's a Joe Devera delivery that just evades the touch of Gary Roberts. Promising though.
  • 46'
Stuart Attwell gets the second half underway here.
  • Tom McKeown at the County Ground holds a bit of hope for the hosts mind you: "Not the ideal half for an upset here at the County Ground. Two well-made goals have proved the difference, but the hosts have the potential to get on the scoresheet tonight. Wide men Matt Ritchie and Gary Roberts are both looking lively and if they can create chances for the front two, who knows? We could see an unlikely comeback."
  • Paul Lambert will be particularly pleased with the performance of Stephen Ireland so far tonight. There's clearly a wonderful talent in there somewhere, it's just a matter of getting it out of him on a consistent basis.
  • 45'
It's half time here at the County Ground and Villa's Premier League class looks to have made the difference here after a bright Swindon start. Long way back for the home side now.
  • 44'
Could have been 3-0! Wes Foderingham's been criticised in the past by manager Paolo Di Canio but he's just produced a fantastic save to tip Andreas Weimann's goal-bound effort away.
  • 43'
Swindon look like they've had the stuffing knocked out of them somewhat. Ron Vlaar has been imperious at the back for Villa and he's just comfortably seen off the challenge of Collins to ease a long ball back to Given.
  • 41'
It's not really surprising that for all of Swindon's endeavour, it's been two of Villa's more established Premier League players in Ireland and Agbonlahor who have made the difference. The top division outfit certainly look comfortable at the moment and could have just had a penalty but a clumsy tackle from McEveley goes unnoticed by the referee.
  • 39'
    Goal Gabriel Agbonlahor
GOAL!!!!!!!!! 2-0!!!! That was a clinical piece of football and finish from Gabby Agbonhalor, who really seems to be enjoying the Capital One Cup so far this season after his goals against Manchester City in the last round.
  • 39'
This is as our man at the County Ground, Tom McKeown, saw it: "It's not looking good for the hosts here after Villa double their lead with a superb goal. Andreas Weimann robbed the ball in midfield and that man Ireland was again involved, spreading the ball to Gabby Agbonlahor, who stepped inside and unleashed a rocket of a strike across goal and into the far corner."
  • 36'
Swindon putting their more illustrious opponents under quite a bit of pressure here with several high balls into the box courtesy of Matt Ritchie. Villa don't entirely look convincing dealing with them, particularly with the burly James Collins at the centre of affairs in the Villa penalty area. However, the ball just does not fall for any of the Swindon attackers and Villa escape.
  • 33'
Swindon go close to an equaliser! Ritchie's cross nearly reaches Flint at the far post but he just fails to make the contact that could have brought the Robins level.
  • 31'
It was that bit of top-division quality we mentioned earlier. Inevitably it was Stephen Ireland at the heart of it. His good cross finds Belgium international Benteke and he plants his header beyond Foderingham into the back of the net.
  • 30'
    Goal Christian Benteke
GOAL!!!!!!! 0-1 Aston Villa and it's Christian Benteke, the man preferred to Darren Bent by Paul Lambert tonight who has given the Premier League side the lead.
  • 29'
    SubstitutionChris Herd Enda Stevens
  • 25'
Swindon go so close to taking the lead! Some good build-up play sees Paul Benson produce a quite magnificent piece of control, go round Shay Given in the Villa goal before producing a low strike that is blocked off the line by Matt Lowton! Superb piece of skill from the former Charlton man!
  • 23'
From Tom McKeown at the County Ground: "The Premier League side are starting to take control here now. But for a bit of miscommunication between Andreas Weimann and Stephen Ireland, Villa could have been in on goal. At the other end, a superb last-ditch challenge from Karim El Ahmadi denied Collins a run at goal."
  • 21'
Andreas Weimann just beginning to come into the game now for Villa. He's just had little half-chance in the box but just delays his final decision and the chance is gone before the little Austrian could either pull the trigger or find a team-mate.
  • 19'
Lovely touch that from the Villa fans.
  • 19'
Tom McKeown again: The Villa faithful start the applause in the 19th minute in honour of Stilyan Petrov, and the home fans have joined in. Very nice to see. As for the action, we still haven't seen any clear-cut chances, but this game is threatening to explode into life.
  • 18'
Agbonlahor is the real danger man for Villa going forward. His pace is causing real problems for the Swindon defence but his cross just evades the onrushing Stephen Ireland.
  • 16'
Swindon still just about shading it here, although McEveley's just shanked a cross miles over the bar from a decent position. Positives for the Robins and Di Canio though.
  • 13'
This from our man Tom McKeown at the County Ground: Bright start for the hosts at the County Ground. James Collins has had a couple of forays forward but no chances to speak of yet. Villa - resplendent in VERY stripy green and black socks, still settling into this match.
  • 12'
    Yellow Card Aden Flint
  • 12'
Aiden Flint's just gone in the book for Swindon. From the resulting free kick, Barry Bannan's delivery is easily claimed by Foderingham. Villa certainly carry a threat on the break but you'd expect that with the likes of Stephen Ireland and Agbonlahor in the side.
  • 10'
Offside decision against James Collins, who scored a hat-trick as Swindon famously knocked out Stoke in round two of this competition. The Swindon players have certainly started well here!
  • 7'
Di Canio's prowling the technical area now and he'll pleased with what he's seen so far. Besides that Benteke miss, Swindon have actually enjoyed the better possession so far. In fact, Matt Ritchie's nearly forced an opening in the Villa box but it eventually dribbles to nothing.
  • 3'
Villa with a big chance to take an early lead here and Darren Bent will not be happy when he sees that. Superb pace from Agbonlahor whose cross finds Benteke but the Belgian summer signing fails to get any sort of contact on it and the chance is wasted.
  • 1'
We're underway here. A long Swindon ball goes straight out for a goal kick.
  • For Swindon, well Paolo Di Canio has certainly been looking forward to this one! He's even said today that beating Aston Villa would be better than a night spent with a certain Madonna! The Italian has certainly put Swindon on the map with his managerial antics in the last couple of seasons. He's also been successful on the pitch too, leading the Robins to promotion from League Two and going pretty well in League One so far this season. Sniff of an upset tonight?
  • Villa really could do win a win here. They did see off Manchester City impressively in the last round so maybe the Capital One Cup can provide some relief to what's proving to be a difficult season so far. Have to say I'm surprised Bent isn't starting tonight. Surely if there ever was a game in which to give your proven goalscorer a chance from the start, it's tonight?
  • So Lambert's elected to make a few changes to his Villa outfit from the weekend draw with Norwich. Shay Given's returned in goal ahead of Brad Guzan, as has Eric Lichaj, Andreas Weimann, Barry Bannan and Stephen Ireland. Still no place for Darren Bent in the starting line up, Christian Benteke being preferred instead.
  • ASTON VILLA v Swindon Town: Given; Lowton, Vlaar, Herd, Lichaj; El Ahmadi, Weimann, Bannan, Ireland, Agbonlahor, Benteke Substitutes: Guzan, Bent, Albrighton, Holman, Delph, Stevens, Burke
  • SWINDON TOWN v Aston Villa: Foderingham; Devera, McCormack, Flint, McEveley; Ritchie, Ferry, Miller, Roberts; Benson, Collins Subs: Bedwell, Archibald-Henville, Thompson L, Williams, Storey, De Vita, Thompson N
  • Hello and welcome to's play by play of Swindon Town v Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup Fourth Round. I'm Adam Mazrani and you'll have to deal with me for the next couple of hours as Paul Lambert tries to relieve the pressure that's ever rising on him.
