    Stephen Harper

Has looked nervy in his elder years, and continued to do so at St James' Park this evening, often failing to keep hold of the ball in slippery conditions.

  • Davide Santon

    Davide Santon

The Italian had a battle on his hands against the lively Lestienne, and certainly did not have the beating of the 20-year-old Belgian, with Santon often focusing on attacking the flank instead of defending it.

  • James Perch

    James Perch

Once lost out to Refaelov and was fortunate not to see the Israeli attacker take advantage but otherwise could not be faulted. Strong in the air and calm in possession, he as turned into a real class act for Newcastle.

  • Steven Taylor

    Steven Taylor

Did well as captain for the evening and looked solid alongside James Perch, as the pair defended well against a Brugge attack that did little to penetrate through the middle.

  • Shane Ferguson

    Shane Ferguson

The left-back is benefiting from increasing game time at Newcastle. May look slight, but never shirks a challenge, and is already renowned in this part of the world for his wicked cross.

    Vurnon Anita

Kept things ticking over in the middle of the park, but still looked to be struggling to find his feet in the north east during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Replaced by Shola Ameobi at half-time.

  • Gael Bigirimana

    Gael Bigirimana

Assured display from the young midfielder, who kept it simple and clean for the most part. Slipped into bad habits with loose passing at times, but won the midfield battle with Tiote.

  • Cheikh Tiote

    Cheikh Tiote

Not the best night for the Ivorian, who surely will have felt the need to make amends after Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby red card. Was loose in possession at times, once or twice showing an incredible lack of awareness, while also found his name in the referee's book again - fortunately only a yellow was brandished his direction this time round.

  • Papiss Cissé

    Papiss Cissé

Chance after chance fell the Senegalese striker's way, but much like his season so far, things just didn't quite click for him up top.

  • Gabriel Obertan

    Gabriel Obertan

Once again the focus of frustration for the home support in the first 45, and rightly so. Must have received a rollicking at half-time from Alan Pardew as he emerged a different player for the second period, opening the scoring with well-taken drive.

  • Sammy Ameobi

Sammy Ameobi Top of the Match

Started out quietly on the left, but as soon as he switched flanks, the 20-year-old came into his own with a series of mazy runs and was Newcastle's most dangerous player for most of the first half. Linked up well with brother Shola before being replaced by Coloccini after the break.

    Fabricio Coloccini

Came on in place of Sammy Ameobi late on, and was on hand to steer his side to a key group stage victory.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Replaced Ferguson with 10 minutes to play.

  • Shola Ameobi

    Shola Ameobi

Came on in place of Anita at half-time and made an immediate impact, releasing his younger brother to tee up Obertan for Newcastle's opener. Continued to show a good understanding with his young sibling throughout.

  • Bojan Jorgacevic

    Bojan Jorgacevic

Showed good reflexes to thwart Cisse, but couldn't keep out Obertan's powerful drive.

    Tom Hogli

Looked to get in behind Ferguson, but rarely to great effect. Also failed to prevent the young Northern Irishman peppering the box with a series of well-placed crosses.

    Carl Hoefkens

The veteran centre-back and captain marshalled his side well, and stood up to the physical presence of Ameobi in the second-half. Will be disappointed not to have helped his side keep a clean sheet.

  • Bart Buysse

Bart Buysse Flop of the Match

Had a difficult night at left-back against Cisse and Santon, and was fortunate not to have a penalty awarded against him for fouling the striker in the first half. Failed to track Obertan for Newcastle's goal.

  • Jordi Figueras

    Jordi Figueras

Struggled against Cisse in the first half, but not so much the second, with the runs of Shola and Sammy Ameobi from deep his primary concern. Still, stood tall and did well to ensure his side did not fall further behind.

  • Lior Rafaelov

    Lior Rafaelov

Will be disappointed to have been removed so early into the second half. The 26-year-old may not have proved influential throughout, but remained a threat and almost grabbed an immediate response for his side following Obertan's goal.

  • Jesper Jørgensen

    Jesper Jørgensen

Looked the away side's most creative player throughout. The Dane retained possession well and added a touch of class to the visitor's midfielder when going forward

  • Jonathan Blondel

    Jonathan Blondel

A busy performance in the middle of the park, but he just could not help his side keep hold of the ball in the middle of the park, with the Belgians instead consistently relying on the counter attack.

  • Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe

    Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe

A quiet first-half display, but as the game became more stretched in the second 45, the 23-year-old found space to drive in the middle. Unfortunately, failed to do much with it.

  • Maxime Lestienne

    Maxime Lestienne

A lively display from the pacey midfielder, who had no qualms getting forward. Looked to stretch Santon where possible, and was also keen to test Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal.

  • C. Bacca

    C. Bacca

Failed to trouble the Newcastle centre-backs, with Brugge firmly relying on their width in attack.

    Ivan Trickovski

Good second-half display. Drew a foul from Tiote and also nearly a late equaliser, only to be thwarted by Taylor's block.
