  Once lost out to Refaelov and was fortunate not to see the Israeli attacker take advantage but otherwise could not be faulted. Strong in the air and calm in possession, he as turned into a real class act for Newcastle.

  The left-back is benefiting from increasing game time at Newcastle. May look slight, but never shirks a challenge, and is already renowned in this part of the world for his wicked cross.

  Kept things ticking over in the middle of the park, but still looked to be struggling to find his feet in the north east during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Replaced by Shola Ameobi at half-time.

  Not the best night for the Ivorian, who surely will have felt the need to make amends after Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby red card. Was loose in possession at times, once or twice showing an incredible lack of awareness, while also found his name in the referee's book again - fortunately only a yellow was brandished his direction this time round.

  Once again the focus of frustration for the home support in the first 45, and rightly so. Must have received a rollicking at half-time from Alan Pardew as he emerged a different player for the second period, opening the scoring with well-taken drive.

  Sammy Ameobi Top of the Match

  Started out quietly on the left, but as soon as he switched flanks, the 20-year-old came into his own with a series of mazy runs and was Newcastle's most dangerous player for most of the first half. Linked up well with brother Shola before being replaced by Coloccini after the break.

  Had a difficult night at left-back against Cisse and Santon, and was fortunate not to have a penalty awarded against him for fouling the striker in the first half. Failed to track Obertan for Newcastle's goal.
