Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

The hosts were lucky to get a late penalty but Mario Balotelli converted it perfectly to spare their blushes, Joe Hart having worked brilliantly against the livewire visitors

Joe Hart Top of the Match

In quite superb form. Three times denied Gotze in the first half, twice in very quick succession, demonstrating superb anticipation. Constantly in demand in the second half and constantly responded. Perhaps could have got a stronger hand to Reus' opener but, in general, the last man whom City could blame for the result.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

Still lagging a little behind his totemic form of last season. The Belgian seems more sluggish than usual of late and this brought him a booking as he could only barge the pacy Reus over to stop him getting past. Will miss the Ajax game as a result.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    Pablo Zabaleta

Made some key interceptions at the back and looks the most reliable of City’s defenders right now.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Came off the worse in the contest between him and Blaszczykowski and it was only a matter of time after Kolarov came on that he would be sacrificed should City need a goal, Balotelli replacing him for the final 10 minutes.

  • Matija Nastasic

    Matija Nastasic

Just as at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Serbian youngster looked more composed at the back than the somewhat-faltering Kompany but was still pulled around here and there by the visitors' movement. Let down by Rodwell for Reus' opener.

  • Samir Nasri

Samir Nasri Flop of the Match

With Dortmund often attacking more than the hosts, the Frenchman notably squandered one good opportunity to break because of his relative lack of pace, having to cut inside and hold play up instead. Never made an impression on the game and was replaced by the more direct Kolarov.

  • Javi García

    Javi García

Was starting to grow into the game more by the time he went off injured after just over half an hour. Had been somewhat overrun by Dortmund’s constantly pressing forward line early on.

  • David Silva

    David Silva

It is always a treat to watch the Spaniard make a pass and he picked some out on Wednesday of brilliant audacity and precision. If only he had passed into the net rather than awkwardly hoicked over from very close range in a late-first-half chance, the whole night could have been much better for his team.

  • Yaya Touré
    26
    66

    Yaya Touré

Relatively muted as Dortmund mostly bypassed the centre of midfield and attacked from wide instead. When he did get into the action, simply not as superhuman as usual. Yellow-carded and ineffective.

  • Edin Dzeko

    Edin Dzeko

Picked for his great form but City didn't play to his strengths, with little action out wide and instead focusing on short passes through the middle. The Bosnian must be privately frustrated.

  • Sergio Agüero

    Sergio Agüero

Threatening on the counter for City, the Argentine also displayed some real strength, sometimes holding off as many as four opponents at one time. Didn't get enough service in the second half, though, as Dortmund's defenders started to bully him.

Substitutions

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

    Aleksandar Kolarov

Introduced to bring more penetration down the left but failed to do so as he and City were controlled by a dominant away side.

  • Jack Rodwell

    Jack Rodwell

Shamefully unaware when he weakly passed towards Nastasic, allowing Reus to blitz past the Serbian and finish for the opener. Made the simple passes well enough when in safer positions but cannot afford to switch off as he did.

  • Mario Balotelli
    71

    Mario Balotelli

Always the man you want taking a last-minute penalty and he did not disappoint. His only contribution as a late sub but he made it count. So cool.

  • Roman Weidenfeller

    Roman Weidenfeller

Nearly as impressive between the sticks as Hart. Quite brilliant when rushing out to close down Aguero and made some excellent saves, particularly late to deny Argentine's powerful header. Endured a hairy moment dropping a relatively easy cross in the second half that wasn't punished, though.

  • Neven Subotic
    47

    Neven Subotic

One or two awkward touches that could have brought serious punishment in defence but usually followed it up to doggedly win the ball back afterward. Not far away with a chest-down-and-shot in the first half. Very harshly conceded a penalty for an awful handball call - he could hardly have moved.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

Never exposed by Aguero as had been occasionally threatened but an awkward fall when trying to get on the end of an attacking set-piece put an end to his night as he went off injured in the second half.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    52

    Lukasz Piszczek

Tireless in his desire to get forward and link up with Blaszczykowski but Nasri did not often offer him much trouble.

  • Marcel Schmelzer

    13

    Marcel Schmelzer

The least accurate of Dortmund’s passers when getting forward, as he so often did, but tremendous work rate and width.

  • Sven Bender
    37
    18

    Sven Bender

Did not always seem sure who to track as City’s attacking midfielders drifted around the pitch, giving him a real test on his first start of the season, but he improved as the game went on and the hosts' threat proved invisible.

  • Ilkay Gündogan
    43
    10
    3.00

    Ilkay Gündogan

Crisp and accurate in his passing - particularly the sublime diagonal that put a chance on a plate for the wayward Lewandowski - but should have provided a bigger test for Joe Hart with a shot late in the first half.

  • Mario Götze
    98
    10
    4.00

    Mario Götze

Could perhaps have been more ruthless in his finishing – he was good with the final touch but not great, which allowed Hart’s brilliance to deny him. Superb movement in and around the box, however. His talent is obvious.

  • Marco Reus
    86

    Marco Reus

Always switched on, always pressing and always dangerous. Rodwell's error was awful but Reus' seizure of the opportunity was that of a real poacher.

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski
    55
    6
    3.00

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Co-operated well with Poland international colleague Piszczek down the right and drilled some powerful crosses towards Lewandowski that just didn’t quite find their man.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    66
    18

    Robert Lewandowski

A very poor attempted finish with the outside of his boot that should have made it 2-0 was a letdown after plenty of hard work and movement to create space for the dangerous attacking midfielders.

Substitutions

Had little enough trouble after replacing the injured Hummels.

No time to make much impact after he replaced Gotze for five minutes.

Came on for the final 10 minutes just as City rallied.
