Player Ratings: Valencia 1-1 Bayern Munich

Goal.com rates the players on show as a late Thomas Muller equaliser against 10-man the hosts booked die Roten a spot in the next round, with Los Che also progressing

By Tom Webber

  • Guaita

    Guaita

The keeper made a string of impressive saves to keep Bayern at bay until the final few moments, when a deflected Muller effort got the better of him. His saves from Dante and Pizarro in the first half were particular highlights.

  • Aly Cissokho

    3.00

    Aly Cissokho

A decent performance from the left-back as he provided some drive to the counterattack with some quality forward runs. He did not neglect his defensive duties as Bayern were largely frustrated down their right.

  • Adil Rami

    3.50

    Adil Rami

The France international put in a strong performance at the back, marshaling the defence well and committing himself to every available ball. He kept Pizarro quiet for the majority of the game and can be pleased with his performance.

  • Barragán

    3
    2.00

    Barragán Flop of the Match

Struggled to contain Ribery as the Frenchman frequently skipped past him with ease. Let his team down with a hugely reckless challenge on David Alaba in the 33rd minute which reduced his side to 10 men at a point where Bayern were on top.

  • Jose Andrés Guardado
    5
    0
    3.00

    Jose Andrés Guardado

Helped out the defence by tracking back to avoid Muller and Lahm overloading Cissokho. Unfortunately, this limited his impact in the opposing half of the pitch and he was unlucky to miss out on turning a rebound in from a Neuer save.

  • Ricardo Costa
    3
    0
    3.00

    Ricardo Costa

Made an absolutely tremendous interception to stop Lahm from latching on to Ribery's excellent pass in the first half. He helped keep a close watch on Pizarro and ensured that the majority of crosses into the box did not find a red shirt.

  • Sofiane Feghouli

Sofiane Feghouli Top of the Match

Took a while to get involved in the game, but was one of his side's most threatening players. Forced a great save from Neuer in the 32nd minute, but got his goal after an excellent run in the second half. Was unlucky that the equaliser took a deflection off of him.

  • Ever Banega
    6
    0
    3.00

    Ever Banega

Dropped in alongside Tino Costa and Parejo when his side were out of possession. When they won it he was eager to move it forward, but he never really managed to create anything of worth for his side.

  • Parejo
    0
    1
    2.50

    Parejo

Struggled to keep up with the game and spent a lot of time chasing across the field as Bayern controlled the first half. His wide array of passing was not on show, leading to a disappointing display.

  • Tino Costa
    3
    1
    3.00

    Tino Costa

Put in a very industrious performance in the heart of midfield, chasing the ball across the pitch and making some important tackles. He read the game well and often relieved the pressure on his defence.

  • Roberto Soldado
    4
    0
    3.00

    Roberto Soldado

Did not receive the ball a lot but when he did he certainly made the most of it. His determination created his team some of their best opportunities and he proved to be very effective in the opposing half.

Replaced Banega in the 80th minute and was unable to influence the game.

    Jonas

Came on for Dani Parejo with 15 minutes remaining but was unable to get a sight of goal.

  • Haedo Valdéz

    Haedo Valdéz

Brought on for Guardado but could not impact on proceedings.

  • Manuel Neuer

    3.50

    Manuel Neuer

Had a quiet start to the game but did not disappoint when he made a great save from Feghouli just after the half-hour mark. He was confident and was agonisingly close to keeping out Feghouli's strike.

  • Dante
    3
    3
    2.50

    Dante

Provided a target in the penalty area from set pieces and perhaps should have scored from one of them. Defensively, he seemed uncomfortable alongside Badstuber as the pair afforded too much space to the opposition.

  • Philipp Lahm
    11
    0
    3.50

    Philipp Lahm

Bombed forward from right-back regularly and linked up well with Muller. An interception from Ricardo Costa stopped him from scoring one of the goals of the tournament in the first half.

  • David Alaba
    5
    0
    3.50

    David Alaba

Defended well when standing Feghouli up and made a few decent challenges. He pushed on regularly and put in a number of crosses that offered some of Bayern's best opportunities to find the net.

  • Holger Badstuber
    5
    2
    3.00

    Holger Badstuber

Failed to inspire confidence at the back as he frequently lost track of Soldado and struggled to stay close to the forward. His positioning was not up to scratch but he did okay having played largely at left-back this season.

  • Franck Ribéry
    5
    2
    2.00

    Franck Ribéry

Worried the Valencia defence with some excellent dribbling, reaching the byeline on a number of occasions but his deliveries never found a gambling Bayern player. He lost momentum in the second half and did not create much.

  • Javi Martínez
    4
    1
    2.50

    Javi Martínez

Started very well, getting his foot on the ball and using his vision to spray a number of passes out to the wings. His influence soon decreased as he failed to pull the strings from the middle.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    4
    0
    3.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Was unable to dictate the tempo of the game from midfield as he did not make the most of the freedom offered from Javi Martinez's presence. Defensively, he was impressive and tracked the runners through the midfield at all times.

  • Toni Kroos
    3
    2
    3.00

    Toni Kroos

Found areas of space in the final third but more often than not it was with his back to goal. He therefore could not feed Pizarro, though his delivery from set plays was consistently impressive.

  • Claudio Pizarro
    2
    3
    3.00

    Claudio Pizarro

The Peruvian striker received very little service during his 66-minute stint. His touch and communication were poor and he forged one chance of his own - unfortunately for him Guaita was equal to it.

  • Thomas Müller
    10
    1
    3.50

    Thomas Müller

Linked up well with Lahm but Bayern did not utilise the right wing enough. He drifted in field when his side where in possession and this was key as he netted a late equaliser to ensure progression for his team.

Substitutions

  • Xherdan Shaqiri
    12
    0
    3.50

    Xherdan Shaqiri

Added some much needed invention and guile to the team with his quality dribbling and passing. He was key to Bayern's late push for a goal.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    8
    0
    3.00

    Mario Mandzukic

Came on for Pizarro in the 66th minute and added a focal point to the attack. He rattled the post with a header and was inches away from diverting Alaba's cross into the net in the closing stages.

  • Mario Gomez
    10
    2
    3.00

    Mario Gomez

Made his first appearance for die Roten this season when he replaced Ribery in the 79th minute. His touch in the area was pivotal in offering Muller the chance to equalise.
