    Oleksander Shovkovski

Aside from one shaky second-half incident in which the Ukrainian was forced to scramble off his goal-line after being caught in possession, it was an otherwise quiet evening for the goalkeeper. Polished and efficient when called upon.

  • Danilo Silva

    Danilo Silva

Was handed his side’s toughest assignment in keeping the lively Sammir under wraps but he put in an admirable defensive display and even managed several surging runs into offensive positions.

  • Taras Mykhalyk

    Taras Mykhalyk

Could have wandered around the pitch with a cigar in his mouth such was the lack of threat from the Zagreb frontline. Marshalled the back four well and was dominant in the air when called upon.

  • Taye Taiwo

    Taye Taiwo

A fine evening’s work from the Nigerian full-back. It was his cross that forced the own goal from Pivaric and he was effectively a left-winger in the second half with numerous bursts into the final third. Fantastic display.

  • Yevhen Khacheridi

    Yevhen Khacheridi

Enjoyed an equally quiet evening at centre-back and it was his focus and concentration that ensured Beciraj was virtually anonymous.

  • Miguel Veloso

    Miguel Veloso

Took responsibility for all of his side’s set-pieces and the consistency of his delivery caused Zagreb problems all evening. Always willing to receive the ball off the back four and begin attacks with his eye for a pass.

  • Ognjen Vukojevic

    Ognjen Vukojevic

Produced a superb cross for Husyev’s opening goal and that early assist gave him the confidence to pull the strings for the proceeding 87 minutes. Broke up play well and kept his distribution simple, which provided Kiev with the perfect base.

  • Oleh Husyev

Oleh Husyev Top of the Match

A busy and industrious performance from the 29-year-old. He opened the scoring with a rare header and gave the Zagreb defence a torrid time with a number of mazy dribbles. Only the reflexes of Kelava prevented him from adding to his solitary strike.

  • Niko Kranjcar
    4
    2

    Niko Kranjcar

Was inventive in possession and his ability to roam and play between the lines meant he was impossible to pick up at times. Injury appeared to cut his night short when he was replaced at half-time, but by then the damage had already been done.

  • Andriy Yarmolenko
    0
    2
    2.50

    Andriy Yarmolenko

Blessed with wonderful technique but flattered to deceive on too many occasions. Several slaloming runs created good openings for him to get a shot on goal or set up a goalscoring opportunity, but his final ball was lacking on the night.

  • B. Ideye
    4

    B. Ideye

Strong, quick, powerful and the perfect focal point for Kiev to play off in the final third. His turn of pace and drilled cross created a fine opening for Yarmolenko in the first half, but his team-mate failed to take advantage.

Came on earlier than expected at half-time and with his team firmly in the ascendancy, the midfielder kept things neat and tidy. An effective 45 minutes.

  • Raffael

    Raffael

Another late arrival on to the field in the dying minutes as Kiev ran the clock down.

  • Admir Mehmedi

    Admir Mehmedi

Was brought on with a matter of minutes remaining and had no time to make an impact.

  • Ivan Kelava

    Ivan Kelava

Easily Zagreb’s best player. In the first-half he made fine reaction stops to deny Yarmolenko and Veloso and was a constant vocal presence behind his back four. Without him the margin of defeat would have been even greater.

  • Josip Simunic
    2

    Josip Simunic

Not the quickest of centre halves and he seemed to struggle against the pace of Ideye and the speed of Kiev’s counter-attacks. Not a night he will look back on with great relish.

  • Tonel
    1
    2
    2.00

    Tonel

Looked out of his depth all night long and was found wanting inside the opening five minutes when he was beaten in the air for the opener. He lost possession on the edge of his own area in the second half and nearly gifted the hosts another goal, only for his goalkeeper to come to the rescue.

  • Josip Pivarić

    Josip Pivarić

Comical own goal in the first half summed up a dismal opening 45 minutes. He struggled to cope with the pairing of Taiwo and Huysev and was left exposed time and again.

  • Domagoj Vida
    1
    3
    2.00

    Domagoj Vida

Huysev’s opener came as a result of a right-wing cross, with Vukojevic afforded far too much time and space to deliver his final ball. Did not support Sammir down the left and will be disappointed with his display.

  • Adrián Calello

    2.00

    Adrián Calello

His task was to sit in midfield and prevent Kranjcar from pulling the strings behind the striker, but the midfielder failed to get into the game and allowed the former Tottenham man far too much space. Substituted at half-time and he could have no complaints.

  • Arijan Ademi
    1
    1
    2.00

    Arijan Ademi

Struggled to get to grips with the pairing of Veloso and Vukojevic in midfield and on the rare occasions he did get hold of possession, he failed to penetrate or trouble Kiev.

  • Mateo Kovačić
    3
    0
    3.00

    Mateo Kovačić

The pick of Zagreb’s outfield players. Managed to get his foot on the ball with reasonable frequency and when he did his range of passing was intelligent and purposeful. Several through balls had the Kiev defence scrambling back towards their own goal.

  • Sammir
    2
    1
    3.00

    Sammir

Worked incredibly hard to give his side width and some sort of threat in the final third. His pace had Kiev worried on more than one occasion and he was ready and willing to track back when called upon as well.

  • Marcelo Brozović
    1
    2
    2.00

    Marcelo Brozović

Aside from a few flashes of intricate passing in midfield, his contribution was far too limited to have any influence on proceedings. Often found himself chasing shadows as Veloso and Vukojevic controlled the midfield battle.

  • Fatos Beciraj

    4

Fatos Beciraj Flop of the Match

His first impact on the game came when he was hauled off early in the second half. Never once threatened to unsettle the Kiev back-line and went missing when his side desperately needed a focal point.

Substitutions

  • Bryan Carrasco

    2.50

    Bryan Carrasco

Replaced Sammir late on but by that stage Kiev were cruising and he was left chasing loose ends in the final few minutes.

  • Duje Cop

    3.00

    Duje Cop

Came on at half-time for the disappointing Callelo and his willingness to press the back four at least gave Zagreb a glimmer of hope of pulling a goal back. Worked hard and did all that he could.
