Maritimo have just one absentee going into Thursday's clash, midfielder Rodrigo Antonio was sent off in the second leg of their play-off clash with FC Dila of Georgia and will miss the game through suspension.

Newcastle head into the match beset by injury problems, Tim Krul (elbow) and Fabricio Coloccini (hamstring) are both unavailable, while Danny Simpson (hamstring) and Cheikh Tiote (calf) will also miss out.

Haris Vuckic (groin) is a doubt, and Ryan Taylor (knee) looks set to miss the majority of the campaign.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Maritimo have played against English opposition twice in this competition, they were eliminated by Leeds United in the first round in 1998 and in 2001.
  • The Madeira-based club have had three notable British players. One of which, Glaswegian striker Ian Wallace, also spent two years at Sunderland.
  • The Portuguese side's biggest home win in the competition came against British opposition, they beat Bangor City 8-2 in the third qualifying round in 2010.
  • Newcastle defeated two Portuguese sides on their way to their last major trophy. The Magpies beat both Sporting Lisbon and Vitoria Setubal on their way to Fairs Cup glory in 1969.
  • More recently Newcastle's last game against Portuguese opposition ended in disappointment as they were knocked out of the Uefa Cup by Sporting Lisbon at the quarter-final stage in 2005.
  • Romain Amalfitano (pictured right) could make his European debut for the club this week despite never starting a top flight game in any country.
  • This season is Newcastle's 17th in European football, they have scored a total of 211 goals in continental competitions in that time.

Maritimo's main threat is likely to come from Brazilian striker Danilo. The 25-year-old, who can also operate from the right flank as well as through the centre, found the net eight times in the league last season and also notched five assists.

The men from Madeira have struggled for goals so far this season, and with star striker Baba having moved to Sevilla, the responsibility will fall largely on Danilo's shoulders to provide Pedro Martins' men with the attacking impetus they need.
Gael Bigirimana
Gael Bigirimana

Bigirimana put in two excellent displays in the play-off round against Atromitos, and played a starring role in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa a few weeks ago, producing a fine tackle to deny Darren Bent a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The 18-year-old has showcased excellent tenacity and composure in his short time at St James' Park and Alan Pardew will be looking for him to deliver another assured display as the Toon look to successfully negotiate their way through a difficult away tie.
Prediction
Newcastle will be suffering from a substantial amount of fatigue following their enthralling 2-2 draw at Everton at Monday night, and as a result a high number of changes are to be expected. Maritimo are a difficult outfit to overcome, and lost just four times at home in the the league last season.

Newcastle will go into the clash as heavy favourites and Alan Pardew's men have shown that they do have strength in depth despite a slew of injuries and they should have enough to edge to a slender win.
