Europa League Player Ratings: Maritimo 0-0 Newcastle United

The Magpies played out a dull scoreless draw in Portugal in the start of their season's European foray, with a misfiring Shola Ameobi missing the best chances of the night

By Ewan Roberts

    Romain Salin

Was saved by his post on three occasions but a calm figure for Maritimo. Made no mistakes, dealt with everything that was asked of him and distributed the ball well.

  • Valentin Roberge

    3.00

    Valentin Roberge

Gave away numerous fouls on Shola Ameobi and struggled to deal with the tall striker's physical threat all match. The centre-back had his side's best chance of the match when he struck the underside of the crossbar from a corner.

  • Luis Miguel de Olim Andrade

    Luis Miguel de Olim Andrade

Got forward well but was regularly beaten for pace by Obertan when he left space in behind him - snuffed out his threat, however, in tighter spaces.

  • Briguel

    Briguel

Used the ball well and played two excellent crosses from deep. Rarely troubled defensively.

  • João Guilherme Leme Amorim

    João Guilherme Leme Amorim

Calm and composed on the ball, Guilherme was largely untroubled at the back. Carried the ball out of defence well, typified by a swerving, venomous drive that whizzed past Elliot's post from long range.

  • Rafael Miranda
    1

    3.00

    Rafael Miranda

A tough-tackling, no-nonsense performance, Joao Luiz cleaned up in front of his back four and never allowed Vuckic to get into the match. Dropped deeper to contest aerial balls with Ameobi and was more successful against the Magpies forward than his defensive team-mates.

  • João Luiz Ramires Vieira

    2
    2.50

    João Luiz Ramires Vieira

Provided minimal forward penetration with his passing, and took a nasty elbow from Taylor. More box-to-box compared to Rafael Miranda and occasionaly broke forward to support the attack.

  • David Simao

    2
    2.50

    David Simao

Showed glimpses of class when he drifted to the left hand side, playing several excellent crosses. Drifted in and out of the match before being replaced towards the end of the match. Was booked for dissent in the first half.

  • Héldon Ramos
    0
    2
    2.00

    Héldon Ramos

Replaced after 53 minutes by Fidelis, Heldon was largely a peripheral figure in the match. The least effective of Maritimo's sprightly, spring-loaded front four, he was deservedly withdrawn prematurely.

  • Sami
    1
    1
    3.50

    Sami

His direct running and precise crossing caused a number of problems for the Newcastle back line. Maritimo's mosy threatening player, he almost scored with a volley from a corner and was clean through on goal twice but lacked the composure to beat Elliot. Created the best chance of the night with a brilliant run and cross which Fidelis missed.

  • Danilo Dias
    1

    Danilo Dias

The central striker had a quiet game and was unable to benefit from the often exciting and creative players behind him.

Substitutions

  • Gonçalo Abreu

    2.50

    Gonçalo Abreu

Goncalo replaced Simao with just over 15 minutes to play and forced a good save from Elliot but was otherwise quiet.

  • Fidelis
    1
    1
    2.50

    Fidelis

Came on for Heldon and within minute he had a golden opportunity to score but finessed the ball wide. Couldn't get the better of Williamson or Taylor in the air.

  • Adilson Tibes Granemann

    1
    2.50

    Adilson Tibes Granemann

Came off the bench with less than 10 minutes to play and couldn't impact himself on the match.

  • Rob Elliot
    4
    0
    3.00

    Rob Elliot

Made a good low save to deny Sami and swept up behind his defence well. Came out on top in two one-on-one duels and marshalled his six-yard box with authority.

  • Davide Santon
    9
    0
    3.50

    Davide Santon

Saved Newcastle in the closing moments of the game when he headed Roberge's shot off the line. Got forward well on occasion and was solid at the back.

  • Mike Williamson
    1
    3
    2.50

    Mike Williamson

Dawled on the ball and failed to clear the danger, gifting Sami a one-on-one opportunity in the first half. Made a nuisance of himself in the opposition box and showed his aerial defensive strength when Maritimo tried to find Fidelis with long balls.

  • James Perch
    1
    3
    2.00

    James Perch

Exposed several times at right-back, with much of Maritimo's joy coming down his flank. Unable to stiffle the pace and directness of Sami. Rarely ventured past the halfway line.

  • Steven Taylor
    2
    1
    2.50

    Steven Taylor

Showed signs of a lack of mobility throughout the match and was caught out for pace by Sami especially. Could have been sent off for a seemingly deliberate elbow on Joao Luiz in the first half. Like Williamson, showed his power in the air when Maritimo reverted to the long ball.

  • Dan Gosling
    5
    0
    3.50

    Dan Gosling

Neat and tidy in central midfield, Gosling patrolled the space in front of his back five offering protection and an out-ball. He struck a low drive from long range that hit the outside of the post in the first half.

  • Romain Amalfitano
    4
    1
    2.50

    Romain Amalfitano

Had a quiet game on the left of midfield but played a dangerous inswinging cross from which both Williamson and Ameobi almost scored. Otherwise largely wasteful in the final third.

  • Gael Bigirimana
    5
    0
    3.50

Gael Bigirimana Top of the Match

The 18-year-old harrassed and harried in midfield, showing tenacity and bite, perhaps a little too much when he was shown a yellow card for a robust challenge in the first half. Won possession high up the pitch before releasing Amerobi for a good chance. Recycled possession well, if conservatively.

  • Haris Vuckic
    5
    2
    2.00

    Haris Vuckic

The Slovenian struggled to get into the game in the first half. He often dropped too deep, isolating Shola Ameobi, and scuffed the few chances that fell his way. Replaced by Sammy Ameobi not long after the break.

  • Shola Ameobi
    3

Shola Ameobi Flop of the Match

Almost unplayable at time, Ameobi bullied the Maritimo centre-backs. However, he conspired to miss a host of chances that were easier to score. Miscontrolled the ball when through on goal and prodded two tame efforts into the arms of Salin from close range. Saw a tremendous solo effort hit the crossbar. Had Ameobi been more clinical, Newcastle would have won.

  • Gabriel Obertan
    1
    2
    2.00

    Gabriel Obertan

The flying winger had a largely ineffective game. His speed was evident and he regularly beat his fullback but his end product was wayward and unpredictable. He had one excellent shot however that whistled across the face of goal.

Substitutions

  • Shane Ferguson
    3
    1
    2.50

    Shane Ferguson

Didn't have enough time on the pitch to affect the match but used the ball well and enabled Santon to get forward with greater verve.

  • Sylvain Marveaux
    1
    2

    Sylvain Marveaux

Came on with less than 10 minutes of the match remaining and had insufficient time to make an impact.

  • Sammy Ameobi
    2
    1
    2.50

    Sammy Ameobi

Introduced for Vuckic just after half-time but failed to make an impact on the game. Provided more aerial threat in the box for Newcastle, but was wayward in possession.
