  Calm and composed on the ball, Guilherme was largely untroubled at the back. Carried the ball out of defence well, typified by a swerving, venomous drive that whizzed past Elliot's post from long range.

  A tough-tackling, no-nonsense performance, Joao Luiz cleaned up in front of his back four and never allowed Vuckic to get into the match. Dropped deeper to contest aerial balls with Ameobi and was more successful against the Magpies forward than his defensive team-mates.

  Provided minimal forward penetration with his passing, and took a nasty elbow from Taylor. More box-to-box compared to Rafael Miranda and occasionaly broke forward to support the attack.

  Showed glimpses of class when he drifted to the left hand side, playing several excellent crosses. Drifted in and out of the match before being replaced towards the end of the match. Was booked for dissent in the first half.

  Replaced after 53 minutes by Fidelis, Heldon was largely a peripheral figure in the match. The least effective of Maritimo's sprightly, spring-loaded front four, he was deservedly withdrawn prematurely.

  His direct running and precise crossing caused a number of problems for the Newcastle back line. Maritimo's mosy threatening player, he almost scored with a volley from a corner and was clean through on goal twice but lacked the composure to beat Elliot. Created the best chance of the night with a brilliant run and cross which Fidelis missed.

  Dawled on the ball and failed to clear the danger, gifting Sami a one-on-one opportunity in the first half. Made a nuisance of himself in the opposition box and showed his aerial defensive strength when Maritimo tried to find Fidelis with long balls.

  Showed signs of a lack of mobility throughout the match and was caught out for pace by Sami especially. Could have been sent off for a seemingly deliberate elbow on Joao Luiz in the first half. Like Williamson, showed his power in the air when Maritimo reverted to the long ball.

  Neat and tidy in central midfield, Gosling patrolled the space in front of his back five offering protection and an out-ball. He struck a low drive from long range that hit the outside of the post in the first half.

  The 18-year-old harrassed and harried in midfield, showing tenacity and bite, perhaps a little too much when he was shown a yellow card for a robust challenge in the first half. Won possession high up the pitch before releasing Amerobi for a good chance. Recycled possession well, if conservatively.

  The Slovenian struggled to get into the game in the first half. He often dropped too deep, isolating Shola Ameobi, and scuffed the few chances that fell his way. Replaced by Sammy Ameobi not long after the break.

  Shola Ameobi Flop of the Match

  Almost unplayable at time, Ameobi bullied the Maritimo centre-backs. However, he conspired to miss a host of chances that were easier to score. Miscontrolled the ball when through on goal and prodded two tame efforts into the arms of Salin from close range. Saw a tremendous solo effort hit the crossbar. Had Ameobi been more clinical, Newcastle would have won.

  The flying winger had a largely ineffective game. His speed was evident and he regularly beat his fullback but his end product was wayward and unpredictable. He had one excellent shot however that whistled across the face of goal.
