Newcastle - Atromitos Preview: Magpies looking to seal Europa League Group Stage spot

Alan Pardew's side go into their play-off second leg knowing that a goalless draw will be enough to take them through to the competition proper for the first time in six years

Alan Pardew was critical of Newcastle's busy schedule following his side's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea just 48 hours after their 1-1 draw in the first leg against the Greek side.

Even so, the manager made nine changes for the Premier League tie and we can expect a similar rotation policy to be put in place for the second leg.

Cheikh Tiote (calf) remains out after sitting out the game at Stamford Bridge, as Pardew has no fresh injury concerns.

For the Greek side, they also have no new concerns and expect them to field a similar team to that of last week as they look to cause the upset they so narrowly missed out on six days ago.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Newcastle's tie with Atromitos is only the third time that the Magpies have faced Greek opposition. An Alan Shearer penalty earned them a 1-0 victory over Panionios in the 2004-05 Uefa Cup Group Stage. They also trounced Olympiacos 7-1 on aggregate in the last 16 that same year.
  • In addition to their 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup triumph, Newcastle have reached the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup on three occasions. They reached the semi-finals in 2004 under Sir Bobby Robson, but were knocked out by a Didier Drogba-inspired Marseille.
  • Shola Ameobi has scored seven goals for Newcastle in European competition, only club legend Alan Shearer has scored more, netting 20 in total.
  • This season marks only the second time that Magpies' boss Alan Pardew (pictured, right) has managed in European competition. He was in charge of West Ham during the 2006 Uefa Cup campaign, in which they were eliminated in the first Round by Palermo.
  • In that same year Atromitos made their first appearance in European football. They were also knocked out in the first round, falling victim to a 6-1 aggregate thrashing at the hands of Sevilla.
  • The 2006-07 season also marked the last time that Newcastle reached the knock-out stages of a European competition, as they were knocked out in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup by AZ Alkmaar.
  • By coming on as a substitute in the first leg, striker Adam Campbell became the youngest ever player to compete for Newcastle in Europe at the age of 17 years and 236 days.
  • Should Newcastle striker Demba Ba play in Thursday's clash, it will be his first appearance in European football.
  • If Tim Krul is selected in goal for the Magpies, it will mark his first appearance in Europe since he made his debut for the club in a 1-0 Uefa Cup win over Palermo in 2006.
  • Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote reached the last 32 of the Europa League with FC Twente in 2009 and 2010.

French winger Sylvain Marveaux should be handed another opportunity to showcase his abilities from the start as Alan Pardew looks to make full use of his squad to help cope with the extra demands of a European campaign.

Newcastle fans will look for Marveaux to replicate that kind of form that convinced the Magpies to purchase youngster from Rennes and if he can perform to the standard he has shown in previous years, than Pardew's men should be able to book their place in the Group Stages with relative ease.
Denis Epstein
Denis Epstein

German winger Denis Epstein proved to be the star man of the first leg as he hit home to give the Greek side a surprise lead - and tormented inexperienced right-back James Tavernier - before they were pegged back by Ryan Taylor's free kick.

Newcastle will be need to try and nullify Epstein to ensure that they are not on the end of a major shock.
Prediction
Atromitos put on a brave display in the opening leg to earn a draw, but Newcastle's away goal should prove to be a great mental advantage. In front of a supportive home crowd, Pardew's side are obvious heavy favourites to advance and they have more than enough quality to overcome the Greek outfit by an emphatic margin.
