Player Ratings: Real Madrid 4-3 Real Valladolid

Goal took in the action at the Bernabeu, where the home side managed to buy a stay of execution on their Liga title defence with a narrow win against Miroslav Dukic's side

    Diego López Rodríguez

Forced to claw an ambitious effort by Oscar over the bar, and cannot be blamed for either of the visitors' goals.

  • Pepe

    Pepe

Tasked with a lot more mobile duties than normal with the static Ricardo Carvalho beside him. He was generally sturdy in his defensive duties though, and provided a great threat at the other end from set pieces with one or two thumping headers.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    Fabio Coentrao

Gave his team a lot of width and purpose down the left hand side, and crucially, recovered his defensive position with regularity to keep Valladolid at bay.

  • Ricardo Carvalho

Ricardo Carvalho Flop of the Match

The absence of Sergio Ramos and Raul Albiol saw him drafted in to man the defence, but a dreadfully slow read of Angel Di Maria's pass gifted Oscar the opening goal. An extremely shaky display that makes one wonder how much more time he has left at the very top level.

  • Nacho Fernández
    27
    14
    2.50

    Nacho Fernández

Solid at the back, and provided a decent outlet on the right flank in the opposing half of the field. Knew his role and played within it, a disciplined game.

  • Sami Khedira

    3.00

    Sami Khedira

A display full of energy and commitment in the middle. He sometimes tried to carry the ball too far forward, but one cannot fault his enthusiasm to get involved.

  • Luka Modric

    3.50

    Luka Modric

Seemed completely at ease dictating play from deep, and was not shy to drive forward with the ball to create danger for his side. His creative and incisive play today was reminiscent of his Tottenham best.

  • Ángel Di María

    Ángel Di María

At the thick of everything good in the attacking third for Madrid. He was lucky to see an otherwise tame shot deflected in for the equaliser, but his cross to set up Cristiano Ronaldo's goal was a peach. Seemed capable of magic every time the ball arrived at his feet.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo Top of the Match

The Portuguese star put in an awesome display of power and athleticism. Two well-placed headers were the highlight of an all-action attacking display, as he also came very close with a pair of thunderous free-kicks - one of which crashed off the bar.

  • Kaká
    127
    14
    3.50

    Kaká

The Brazilian was always a shooting threat from long range, and tested the reflexes of Jamie with a few pot-shots from distance. And four minutes into the second half, he finally struck gold, with a powerful shot driven into the corner gave Madrid a 3-2 lead.

  • Karim Benzema
    43
    7
    3.00

    Karim Benzema

Registered an assist by slipping in Kaka on the left hand side with a low pass, but at times, his head did not always seem in the game as he was invisible for stretches at a time.

Substitutions

  • Jaime

    Jaime

Though he conceded four times, a catalogue of fine saves kept his side in the hunt till the very last whistle.

  • Antonio Rukavina
    2
    4
    3.00

    Antonio Rukavina

Generally stuck to his task at the back, and a few outlet passes down the channel set his side in motion on the counter.

  • Marc Valiente
    1
    6
    2.50

    Marc Valiente

Stuck his boot in the way of an eminently saveable shot from Angel Di Maria, and as a result, diverted the ball into his own net. An unfortunate incident, but probably avoidable.

  • Jesús Rueda
    1
    4
    2.50

    Jesús Rueda

Lost sight of Cristiano Ronaldo when Angel Di Maria whipped the ball into the box, and as a result, the Portuguese forward was able to ghost in and head home in the fist half.

  • Balenziaga
    1
    4
    2.50

    Balenziaga

Much like Antonio Rukavina on the opposite flank, the full-back turned in a dependable display without ever really setting the world alight.

  • Óscar
    4
    3
    3.50

    Óscar

Quickest off the mark to swipe Angel Di Maria's pass in front of Ricardo Carvalho and finish superbly for the opening goal. Constantly a threat up front, setting up Javi Guerra's effort, and nearly clipping in from his own half.

  • Omar
    5
    4
    3.00

    Omar

Hard to find fault in his display on the flanks, as he never seemed fazed by the reputation of his opponents and the reception from the stands.

  • Álvaro Rubio
    3
    3
    3.00

    Álvaro Rubio

Started to tire a little in the second half after giving it his all for the first 45 minutes, and he was duly substituted by his coach.

  • Patrick Ebert

    3.00

    Patrick Ebert

Not quite two thumbs up for his performance on the wing, as though he kept the ball well and linked excellently with Oscar, he was lacking in a bit of dynamism to really put pressure on the full-backs.

  • Víctor Pérez
    2
    4
    2.50

    Víctor Pérez

Run a little ragged at times by the elegance of Luka Modric, as there were spells where he was left chasing shadows, struggling to keep up with the tempo of play.

  • Javi Guerra
    2
    3
    3.00

    Javi Guerra

Bundled home a goal towards the end of the first half that made it 2-2, but featured little otherwise, as he was rather isolated up front on his own.

Substitutions

  • Sastre

    Sastre

Decent enough on the ball in the closing stages, providing some fresh legs.

  • Bueno

    Bueno

Nothing really remarkable from him off the bench, as the game passed him by on occasions.
