  Made the first save of the game - a comfortable parry at his near post from Tevez - before denying Nasri with a sprawling low save. Took a couple of confident catches as well as tipping one dangerous corner over his crossbar. But was beaten at his near-post by a well-struck Toure drive. If you're being harsh, you could say Cech may have done better with the goal, however well hit the ball was. The same could not be said for City's second goal as Tevez smashed a right-footed shot into the top corner from 18 yards.

  Dealt with Milner well and overlapped Hazard on occasion but his final ball wasn't good enough from dangerous positions. As Chelsea fell behind and frustration set in he tripped Tevez, preventing a breakaway and collecting a yellow card.

  Branislav Ivanovic Flop of the Match

  Did an understated job at right-back for most of the first-half until a moment of stupidity saw the Serbian lunge in two-footed on Kolarov, catching the left wing-back high on his shin. Kevin Friend wasted no time dishing out the red card, making the correct decision.

  David Luiz

  Was outmuscled by Tevez on the byline, conceding a corner in the process. However his early involvement was promising and composed. Showed great pace to beat Aguero to a long pass and generally had a first-half devoid of any rash decisions. Could do little about the first goal but was left for dead by Tevez as he cut inside and onto his favoured right-foot.

  Was solid and reliable in the first-half, attacking the first ball when he could and kept Tevez relatively quiet. However, a lunging semi-clearance from a deflected cross provided Toure with the chance for his goal. Should have provided better support for Luiz but was left too flat-footed as he came to deal with Tevez, giving the forward the space he needed to get his shot off.

  Too quick for De Jong early on, drawing him into an early foul and played neatly in the middle. Forced Pantilimon into his first save with a decent shot from the edge of the box but it was easily held. Was booked moments after the Ivanovic red card for a late tackle on Milner and perhaps should have received a second yellow himself for another late challenge on Milner.

  Not his best half. The Nigerian midfielder was caught on the ball too many times in a role that requires simplicity. Had one long-range effort that sailed over the bar but looked a little off the pace.

  Wasn't happy with a mischievous tackle from De Jong in the opening exchanges but worked hard on the right of the three behind Torres. Cynically stopped a Nasri break on the halfway line, receiving a yellow card in the process. But had a massive hand in the opening goal, picking up a loose ball on the edge of the box before gliding past Zabaleta and firing a pass into Torres's feet for an assist. Ended up at right-back following Ivanovic's red card.

  Eden Hazard

  Didn't endear himself to City fans with an early dive and though he drew a foul and yellow card from Savic, his next major involvement saw him trip over his own feet as he attempted a back-heel to Cole. Wasn't put off by his gaffe though and found space to cut inside onto his right and fire a troubling low drive that Pantilimon just gathered. Faded once they went down to ten men and was withdrawn on the 70th minute for Bertrand. His first game on English soil had flashes of the brilliance that convinced Chelsea to pay £32m for him but they were only brief flashes. More to come.

  Fernando Torres

  Struggled initially against Kompany but began to move into the channels more, where he is usually an effective runner. Had little sight of goal until the 40th minute when he latched onto Ramires' incisive pass, taking one touch before lifting the ball over Pantilimon. Began the second-half well, carrying the ball from the halfway line into the box, leaving Kolarov to slide back and deny the striker a shot on goal, before repeating the feat, this time drawing a foul from Kompany that saw the Belgian booked. Had a promising game.

  Not at his creative best but linked encouragingly with Lampard and Ramires in the first-half. Found his space and freedom reduced once Ivanovic went off as he had to fill-in on the right rather than behind Torres. Replaced by Sturridge.

  Only had two saves to make in the opening 30, dealing with Lampard and Hazard's efforts comfortably enough. Had no chance with the opening goal as Torres clipped the ball over him from 6 yards. However, the back-up to Joe Hart will be furious at his error for Chelsea's 2nd goal as he made a relatively routine save look difficult, parrying the ball back into play for Bertand to tap home. Booked for holding onto the ball in the melee afterwards.

  Played as the left centre-back of a 3-5-2 and seemed comfortable – certainly more so than Savic. However, he was beaten too easily on the edge of the box by Ramires in the build-up to the goal.

  Clattered Hazard after 9 minutes with a late challenge and was booked retrospectively. Has a somewhat dubious reputation in England after a less than impressive debut season in Manchester and he did little to shake that tag. Some of his passing was terrible, his decision making was hit and miss and he was lucky not to receive a second yellow for an elbow on Torres in a tangle of bodies. Subbed at half-time.

  Recovery from a calf injury looked to be fine as he dominated Torres in the early exchanges. Fancied his chances in a one-on-one situation with the Spaniard, opting to sit deeper than his centre-back partners Savic and Zabaleta. Needed to rely on his defensive partners to prevent the first goal but watched as Ramires' pass skipped by him and onto Torres. Picked up a yellow card in the first-half, shoulder charging Torres as the last man.

  Provided a decent outlet on the left but struggled to impose himself on the game in the opening period. Was the last man standing for Torres' goal, but despite his desperate lunge, could not prevent the Chelsea No.9 scoring. Was clattered by Ivanovic on the left wing, leading to the Serbian's dismissal. Covered back well in the second-half, sliding in on Torres, conceding an early corner. Overlapped Tevez for the third goal, delivering a telling cross for Nasri.

  Barely involved in the first 15 minutes but grew into the game leading to a precise cross that Aguero just nodded wide. Did what he could on the right-wing but found it tough going up against Cole. Was clattered by Lampard just before half-time and again later in the second-half. Played a delightful pull-back to Aguero but the forward missed at the far post.

  Committed start to the game saw him fly into a series of tackles on the wet surface that riled a number of Chelsea players. Was a little bit naughty with one tackle on Ramires, leaving the Brazilian moaning to Kevin Friend about a studs-up challenge. Lasted the half without getting carded and set the tone for City.

  Samir Nasri

  Ran at the heart of Chelsea's defence early on, testing Terry for pace within the first couple of minutes. Was found in behind by Aguero on the 16th minute but his prod at goal was well saved by Cech. Popped up in dangerous positions and broke well on a number of occasions. Truly showed his class with an outstanding finish for the third. A toe-poke volley is the best way I can describe it as he guided the ball past Cech. Replaced by Silva with 15 to go.

  Had a fairly quiet game by his standards but delivered the equalising blow, picking up a poor clearance on the edge of the box, taking a touch onto his right before drilling low and hard past Cech at his near post. Galloped past Luiz late on, feeding Milner for a chance for City to seal the win. As said, a quieter game, but impressive nonetheless.

  Carlos Tévez Top of the Match

  Wide free-kick forced Cech into the first save at his near post in the early stages but wasn't as prominent as he would have liked in the first period. Did slip one nice pass through to Aguero but that led to little. However, his magical moment was to come as he picked the ball up outside of the box on the left side. In a classic Tevez move, the mercurial striker, weaved across the box, first drawing Luiz and then Terry before wrapping his foot around the ball, careering it into the top corner. Had a hand in the third, slipping Kolarov in down the left.

  Sergio Agüero

  When the ball broke kindly from a Tevez pass, the Argentine just about played Nasri in on goal on a wide angle. Later, found room in the box to beat the Chelsea defence to a cross, nodding just wide of the back-post. Was busy but didn't have the sort of match-winning game we have become accustomed to. Missed a near-enough open goal in the 90th minute, slotting wide from six yards.
