  His cross to set up Schweinsteiger’s goal was inch-perfect, and he looked a good fit at left back, despite not seeing much action defensively in the first half.

  Encouraging signs from the youngster out wide. Though not exactly faced with the most sturdy defence, his movement into dangerous areas still marked him as a threat. A little careless when making challenges though, but his tracking back was diligent.

  Not a whole lot to do in a defensive sense in the opening half, as Mainz rarely sustained any pressure in the opposition half. Kept within his limits, distributing the ball quickly to his more offensive minded teammates. He was called upon to protect his defence more after the interval though.

  Took his goal extremely well, although he was helped by some non-existent marking from the visiting defence. Always posed a danger when attacking the ball from deep, though that extra flourish was still lacking from his game.

  Dictated play with aplomb in behind Mandzukic, and with a lot of Bayern’s gameplan focused on exploiting the flanks, his quick distribution to wide areas was key.

  Scored the first goal of the match via a simple tap-in with barely three minutes on the clock, and always looked to throw himself about aerially and attack crosses. A handful for the Mainz defence.

He was shunted out to the wing in the absence of Robben and Ribery, but that did not curtail his effectiveness as he laid on the first goal with an incisive cross.
