Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 3-1 Mainz

Goal.com casts a studious eye over the performers at the Allianz Arena as the hosts emerged with all three points despite a test from the plucky visitors

    Manuel Neuer

Rarely called into action, but made no mistake with the routine.

  • Dante

    Dante

Solid when called upon to deal with the rare ball forward from Mainz, but gave his team unnecessary pressure with a slack challenge that was rightfully called as a penalty.

  • Jerome Boateng

    2.50

    Jerome Boateng

A relatively stress-free game in the first half, as he closed down the visitors’ frontline whenever they got in range of his goal, but was put under more pressure after the interval.

  • Philipp Lahm

    3.00

    Philipp Lahm

Set up shop in an advanced position on the right flank, and was not afraid to drift infield and inflict damage when necessary. Mainz found it difficult to track his runs.

  • Holger Badstuber

    Holger Badstuber

His cross to set up Schweinsteiger’s goal was inch-perfect, and he looked a good fit at left back, despite not seeing much action defensively in the first half.

  • Xherdan Shaqiri

    Xherdan Shaqiri

Encouraging signs from the youngster out wide. Though not exactly faced with the most sturdy defence, his movement into dangerous areas still marked him as a threat. A little careless when making challenges though, but his tracking back was diligent.

  • Luiz Gustavo Dias

    Luiz Gustavo Dias

Not a whole lot to do in a defensive sense in the opening half, as Mainz rarely sustained any pressure in the opposition half. Kept within his limits, distributing the ball quickly to his more offensive minded teammates. He was called upon to protect his defence more after the interval though.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Took his goal extremely well, although he was helped by some non-existent marking from the visiting defence. Always posed a danger when attacking the ball from deep, though that extra flourish was still lacking from his game.

  • Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos Top of the Match

Dictated play with aplomb in behind Mandzukic, and with a lot of Bayern’s gameplan focused on exploiting the flanks, his quick distribution to wide areas was key.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    43

    3.50

    Mario Mandzukic

Scored the first goal of the match via a simple tap-in with barely three minutes on the clock, and always looked to throw himself about aerially and attack crosses. A handful for the Mainz defence.

  • Thomas Müller

    Thomas Müller

His sterling early-season form continued with an enterprising display in the attacking third. He was shunted out to the wing in the absence of Robben and Ribery, but that did not curtail his effectiveness as he laid on the first goal with an incisive cross. Continued to cause problems throughout, though his shooting was a tad wayward.

    Javi Martínez

Came on as a more defensive option for Shaqiri for the closing stages, but it was his offensive contribution which stood out, as an exquisite cross laid on Kross` clincher.

  • Claudio Pizarro
    30
    2

    Claudio Pizarro

A very late cameo, but nearly added his name to the scoresheet with a chance at the death.

  • Christian Wetklo

    Christian Wetklo

Bayern did not test him as much as expected, but he was hung out to dry by his defence for both goals in the first half.

  • Zdenek Pospech

    2.50

    Zdenek Pospech

His tendency to drift infield left his flank exposed towards the beginning and the end of the game.

  • Nikolce Noveski

    6
    2.50

    Nikolce Noveski

Made a few good tackles, but the movement of Bayern on the counter attack left him scrambling to keep up.

  • Radoslav Zabavnik

    Radoslav Zabavnik

A weak clearance was what presented Muller with the chance to lay on the opening goal, but he recovered thereafter and was quick to force the German international infield by closing him down quickly.

  • Jan Kirchhoff
    3
    5
    3.00

    Jan Kirchhoff

Worn down to the bone by bouts of stifling Bayern pressure in front of his goal, and struggled to keep tabs on the likes of Kroos. His improvement, however, coincided with his teams, as a few timely challenges halted the hosts in their tracks.

  • Niko Bungert
    2
    4
    2.50

    Niko Bungert

A bit hit or miss at the back. Positive play in the air was marred by a few questionable decisions in his marking.

  • Marco Caligiuri
    1
    10
    1.50

Marco Caligiuri Flop of the Match

Saw little time or space, and his ineffectiveness was recognized by his coach when he was withdrawn in the 37th minute.

  • Julian Baumgartlinger
    3
    5
    3.00

    Julian Baumgartlinger

He was afforded more offensive freedom as his side increased their efforts in the attacking third, and one darting run into the box was halted, illegally, by Dante, leading to Szalai`s penalty.

  • Marcel Risse
    2
    6
    1.50

    Marcel Risse

Had one charge through the middle that livened Mainz up for one brief moment, but otherwise, his contribution was negligible. Withdrawn alongside Caligiuri in the first half.

  • Nicolai Müller
    2
    5
    2.50

    Nicolai Müller

More active out wide in the second half than his torrid time during the opening 45 minutes, but quality was lacking from him in the end.

  • Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
    2
    6
    2.00

    Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

Despite troubling at times with his strength, he was rarely able to get the better of Dante and Boateng, and gave up possession on a few occasions.

Substitutions

  • Elkin Soto

    5
    3.00

    Elkin Soto

Helped to patch up what had been a shaky midfield until his arrival. Brought a positive influence to the middle of the park.

  • Adam Szalai
    4
    5
    3.00

    Adam Szalai

His introduction provided Mainz with another target to aim for from set-pieces and crosses, and it was he who calmly dispatched the successful penalty to bring his side back into the game.
