Live Commentary

  • James McManus at Loftus Road: "QPR can't believe their misfortune after conceding a last-minute equaliser at the hands of a beautiful Shaun Maloney free kick when it looked like Loic Remy's goal was going to be enough to hand them a huge three points in their bid to beat the drop this season. In all honesty, a draw is just about deserved for both teams and Roberto Martinez will be delighted with securing an important point, but Harry Redknapp will be absolutely gutted and the players looked like beaten men as they trudged off the pitch at the final whistle there. That goal has well and truly knocked the stuffing out of them. Could that be curtain for the Hoops now? They may look back on this game in May as the day they finally went down."
  • That late equaliser for Wigan signals heartbreak for QPR who now remain eight points from safety with just six games left. Harry Redknapp's side were down to ten men for most of the match after Bobby Zamora's sending off but had restricted Wigan to strikes from outside the box after an organised defensive display. Stephane M'Bia's powerful run led a decisive counter attack following a Wigan free kick, and Loic Remy's outstanding strike looked to have brought QPR a vital victory to narrow the gap that separates the Hoops from safety. However M'Bia went on to give away a disappointing foul on the edge of the box that allowed Maloney to equalise with an excellent free kick. Wigan had struggled to break down the massed QPR defence and the manner of the late equaliser will be especially demoralising.
  • 90' + 5'
The referee blows the full-time whistle.
  • 90' + 4'
    Goal Shaun Maloney
Shaun Maloney equalises for the Latics in the fourth minute of stoppage time! His effort flies over the head of Adel Taarabt in the wall and dips into the top right corner! Taarabt appeared to turn his back on the ball in the middle of his jump from his place in the wall, and his team will wonder whether he could have deflected the shot had he retained focus, but the strike had and excellent trajectory that allowed the ball to dip despite flying cleanly over the wall.
  • 90' + 3'
M'Bia concedes a free kick on the edge of the box for a foul on Maloney, who steps up to take the kick from just outside the box to the right-hand side of the D.
  • 90' + 2'
Jordi Gomez's strike hits the wall but spins over into the box, but QPR are able to clear at the second attempt. The Hoops lump the bal up the pitch and press the Wigan player receiving the ball but the Latics get the ball back up towards the QPR box.
  • 90' + 1'
Bosingwa fouls Jordi Gomez outside the edge of the box after his appeal for a foul is unsuccessful.
  • 89'

  • 88'
    SubstitutionMaynor Figueroa R. Espinoza
  • 88'

  • 86'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "QPR have taken the lead with a massive goal in terms of the relegation battle down at the bottom of the league, with January signing Loic Remy grabbing perhaps the club's most important goal of the campaign to hand the hosts the lead with five minutes of normal time remaining. After a Wigan move breaks down up the other end, Stephane Mbia breaks away at pace before playing in Remy to his right, who takes one touch to set himself before curling a beautiful effort into the top corner past Joel Robles. Fantastic hit."
  • 85'
    Assist Stéphane M'Bia
  • 85'
    Goal Loïc Remy
Remy takes the lead for QPR with an outstanding strike! Wigan roll their free kick across the box before Figueroa's shot is blocked, and M'Bia drives up the pitch to counter with a powerful run. He passes to Remy on the right edge of the box and the France international modifies his run-up before a perfect strike into the top left corner with the side of his right foot leaves keeper Joel motionless.
  • 83'
    Yellow Card Christopher Samba
  • 83'
Wigan counter quickly and and Samba is yellow-carded for a foul on Di Santo outside the edge of the box, after the referee had initially looked to play advantage.
  • 82'
    Yellow Card A. Alcáraz
  • 82'
Taarabt impressively dribbles towards the Wigan box and wins a free kick from Alcaraz who is booked. Samba wins a header following the delivery and heads back across goal, but none of his teammates are in position to strike at goal.
  • 81'
QPR have lost momentum following their strong spell in the middle of the second half and Wigan are now putting heavy pressure on the home side's penalty area.
  • 79'
Maloney takes a corner from the left flank and Scharner manages to connect with the delivery, but his header lacks power and Cesar catches the effort.
  • 78'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "Wigan have just wasted the best chance of the game, when Shaun Maloney wriggles free of Nedum Onouha down the left and sends in a beautiful cross, only to see James McArthur plany his header straight at Julio Cesar when either side of the goalkeeper surely would have meant an opening goal."
  • 77'
James McArthur has an excellent chance to head his side in front following Maloney's cross, but his header is straight at Julio Cesar and the keeper is able to parry the effort. Hill will be disappointed to allow McArthur a free header and relieved that the excellent opportunity was not taken.
  • 76'
James McArthur attempts a left-footed shot from outside the box but his effort is well wide.
  • 75'

  • 74'
Maloney attempts to backheel the ball into Kone on the edge of the box but QPR are able to intercept.
  • 73'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "QPR win a free kick in a promising position and as Adel Taarabt steps up to swing a ball into the box, with plenty of men up, he seems to just change his mind at the last-minute in an attempt to feed Jose Bosingwa into the acres of space down the left flank on the outside of him. He gets far too much on the pass, though, and it trickles out of play and not even his gesture of apology to all four corners of the crowd sees him escape the boo boys."
  • 73'
Taarabt's corner is disappointing and keeper Joel Robles is able to catch confidently before finding a team mate at the opposite end of the pitch with an excellent kick.
  • 72'
Townsend and Taarabt combine effectively on the right flank and Townsend wins a right-wing corner when his shot is deflected.
  • 71'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "The QPR fans haven't had much to cheer about today but they're not shy of booing, whether that be referee Phil Dowd for correctly sending off Bobby Zamora or when Callum McManaman is subbed off after his shocking tackle on Massadio Haidara last month against Newcastle. They're full of voice, but the atmosphere s becoming increasingly bitter with relegation looming."
  • 70'
QPR have been impressive despite being a man down, and M'Bia wins another free kick near the centre circle. Taarabt's attempt to pick out the unmarked Bosingwa on the left flank is horribly overhit however and rolls out for a corner.

  • 67'

  • 63'
Wigan bring on central midfielder James McArthur for left-sided Jean Beausejour, while Stephane M'Bia hobbles off the pitch to receive treatment after falling to the floor. The powerful defensive midfielder is able to return however.
  • 62'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "QPR have started to play with renewed purpose this past five minutes after Adel Taarabt was introduced in place of Junior Hoilett and it's the Moroccan's excellent cross which creates an opportunity for Loic Remy, who nods fractionally wide at the far post."
  • 61'
    SubstitutionJean Beausejour James McArthur
  • 61'
Adel Taarabt crosses the ball from the right flank with the outside edge of his right foot, and the delivery reaches Remy but the striker heads over the bar. It was a difficult header but the cross was excellent.
  • 60'
Townsend shows determination after taking on multiple opponents after cutting in from the right flank, but he wins only a throw-in after Antolin Alcaraz halts his run.
  • 58'
Townsend advances up the centre of the pitch before passing to Remy in the right channel, but the France international's pull-back is poor and overhit, and the attack breaks down when Taarabt's ambitious chipped through ball is misplaced.
  • 57'
Townsend wins a throw-in on the right flank, and Nedum Onuoha crosses the ball towards the far post but none of his teammates are able to reach his delivery.
  • 56'
    SubstitutionJunior Hoilett Adel Taarabt
  • 56'
Bosingwa makes an important sliding challenge to concede a corner, as playmaker Adel Taarabt appears in place of winger Hoilett.
  • 55'
Wigan neatly string passes across the centre of the pitch against a deep QPR defence that is deliberately restricting the space Arouna Kone can run onto.
  • 54'
    Yellow Card Loïc Remy
  • 54'
Remy recklessly slides in on Jordi Gomez and receives a yellow card, but the challenge was potentially dangerous and risked a straight red card. The striker has conceded a string of fouls in the last few minutes and it looks like the frustration of being left alone up front is getting to him.
  • 53'
Hoilett receives the ball on the left flank but none of his teammates are able to reach his cross.
  • 52'
A frustrated Remy concedes a free kick on Figueroa, but QPR quickly win the ball back to the approval of the home fans.

  • 49'

  • 47'
Jordi Gomez shoots from the edge of the box and his effort is saved by Julio Cesar.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionArmand Traoré Nedum Onuoha
  • 46'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "Harry Redknapp has made on change at the break, bringing on Nedum Onouha for Armand Traore, with Jose Bosingwa switching to left-back, but already the Portuguese defender has made a real hash of a simple clearance by trying to beat Shaun Maloney just outside his own box which has invited all sorts of pressure. Wigan are just lacking that little bit of cutting edge at the moment, though."
  • 46'
The referee gets the second half underway! Armand Traore reportedly incurred a knock to the ribs in the first half, and he is replaced by defender Nedum Onuoha. Mercurial playmaker Adel Taarabt remains on the bench.
  • QPR will have little option but to sit deep and look to threaten through the pace of striker Loic Remy and wingers Junior Hoilett and Andros Townsend, so Wigan could look to bring on the powerful striker Franco Di Santo at some point in search of a win that would take them out of the relegation zone.
  • The first half has featured few clear chances for either side and although QPR started brightly, the home side were knocked back by Bobby Zamora's sending off following a high foot on Jordi Gomez. Andros Townsend driving runs down the left flank were responsible for much of his side's threat early on, and Loic Remy hit the post with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, but the Hoops have been on the back foot since Zamora's red card. Wigan have however been unable to create any clear opportunities despite being a man up, with QPR's defensive midfield duo of Stephane M'Bia and Jermaine Jenas effective in forcing the Latics out wide before their crosses are cleared by the powerful centre-backs Clint Hill and Chris Samba.
  • 45' + 2'
Paul Scharner advances out of defence towards the right edge of the box to begin another Wigan attack and Beausejour is allowed to cross from the left edge of the box, but QPR are able to clear in the last act of the first half and the referee blows the half-time whistle.
  • 45' + 1'

  • 45'
QPR continue their attack but after M'Bia receives the ball on the right edge of the box his cross is poor and is cleared.
  • 44'
Wigan retain possession on the edge of the QPR box but eventually return possession to the Hoops after an ambitious through ball is intercepted. Townsend advances up the right flank before whipping in a cross with his right foot, but none of his teammates are able to connect.
  • 42'
Figueroa aims a cross into Kone and QPR repel the danger, but McCarthy wins a corner after Julio Cesar is forced to make a diving save to prevent his powerful strike finding its way into the bottom right corner.
  • 41'
Townsend dribbles inside from the right flank and passes to Hoilett, who had strayed into an offside position to the dismay of the home crowd.
  • 39'
Maynor Figueroa confidently advances from the left of Wigan's three-man defence before threading a neat pass to Jordi Gomez on the left edge of the box, but the midfielder is called offside.
  • 38'
    Yellow Card James McCarthy
  • 38'
James McCarthy receives a yellow card for a foul in the centre circle, and following the free kick the powerful Samba manages to head the ball down in the Wigan box towards Remy, but Wigan are able to clear.
  • 37'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "Phil Dowd is not a popular man inside Lotus Road at the minute as he gives QPR a free kick down the right flank which is then met with a chorus of ironic cheers by the home faithful. A goalmouth scramble ensues from the resulting ball into the box but Wigan hack it clear, with Christopher Samba making a real nuisance of himself."
  • 36'
M'Bia wins a free kick after going down on the right flank under little pressure from Beausejour. Bosingwa's cross instigates a chaotic goalmouth scramble but Wigan are eventually able to clear.
  • 35'
Hoilett shows impressive pace as he attempts to pass the powerful right-back Emmerson Boyce on the outside of the left flank, but his cross is calmly cleared by the well-positioned Paul Scharner on the edge of the six-yard box.
  • 34'
Maloney's disappointing corner is headed away at the near post.

  • 31'
Maloney and Beausejour combine neatly down the left flank before looking back into the centre of the pitch and continuing their attack. James McCarthy ups the tempo with a ball into Maloney on the edge of the box, who touches the ball off to Kone. Under pressure from his marker Clint Hill, Kone lays the ball off to McManaman who strikes a powerful shot narrowly wide of the left post. Wigan are growing in confidence.
  • 30'
Wigan attacker Callum McManaman receives the ball outside the box and aims a curling strike with the inside of his right foot towards the top right corner of the goal, but his effort is wide.
  • 29'
M'Bia attempts to thread a pass from outside the edge of the box towards Remy in behind the Wigan defence, but his effort is blocked.
  • 29'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "Wigan are well on top now as Jordi Gomez, who has been roundly booed every time he touches the ball by the QPR supporters now, tests Julio Cesar from just outside the box. The hosts still look dangerous on the counterattack, though, and an opening goal can't be far away."
  • 28'
Jordi Gomez shoots from outside the box but Julio Cesar confidently collects the effort.
  • 27'
Townsend cuts inside from the right flank and darts in between two opponents before passing towards Remy on the right flank, but the France international is called offside.
  • 26'
Remy receives the ball on the left edge of the box as QPR launch a solitary attack amid a period of Wigan dominance, but he is unable to capitalise.
  • 24'
James McManus at Loftus Road: "Jordi Gomez is down in a heap on the left touchline after Bobby Zamora clatters into him with a high boot following throw in by Shaun Maloney and the referee pulls out a red card. It was a rash, late challenge and he can have few complaints despite his disbelief at being given his marching orders by Phil Dowd. QPR's task has just been made all that more difficult now they're down to ten men with 70 minutes of the game left to go."
  • 22'
Boos ring around the ground directed at Jordi Gomez, but the former Espanyol midfielder is not fazed and stylishly chips a pass over his marker to Shaun Maloney on the edge of the box. The Latics are calmly passing the ball across the centre of the park as QPR are demoralised having been reduced to ten men.
  • 21'
    Red Card Bobby Zamora
  • 21'
Zamora has been sent off after a lengthy period of discussions between the refereeing officials. The decision was fair if unfortunate for QPR, who had already gone into today's match eight points below safety. It's a great boost for Wigan however who are also in the relegation zone but only by a single point.
  • 20'
Jordi Gomez is receiving treatment after being struck in the head with a high boot from Zamora. It was reckless and if the referee has seen it, the QPR striker could be sent off.
  • 19'
Beausejour takes a corner from the left flank and the ball breaks to Shaun Maloney on the left edge of the box, who attempts another cross but his effort is blocked.
  • 17'
Arouna Kone dribbles towards the box and begins a short spell of possession in QPR's half, but the move breaks down and centre-back Antolin Alcaraz is forced to shepherd the ball away from Bobby Zamora who had looked to counter.
  • 15'
QPR have had more possession in the last few minutes but Wigan's three attackers are pressing high up the pitch and the Latics look dangerous from the transitions that result when the Hoops lose the ball.
  • 13'
Jermaine Jenas looks to pass the ball out of defence but instead wins a throw-in after his pass is cut out. QPR continue the attack through Loic Remy, whose shot from outside the box is blocked before he runs towards the far post in an unsuccessful attempt to reach Junior Hoilett's overhit cross from the left flank.
  • 11'
QPR left-back Armand Traore appeals unsuccessfully for a free kick after his run down the left flank is halted, and a rapid exchange of possession ensues as Wigan attempt to counter attack quickly before QPR do the same.
  • 9'
OFF THE POST! Bobby Zamora receives a diagonal pass from Bosingwa and heads the ball back into the path of Loic Remy, who aims a powerful strike towards the top left corner and hits the left post. It would have been his fifth goal in his seventh league start for QPR.
  • 9'
Townsend passes to Bobby Zamora on the edge of the box and moves into position to receive the return pass on the edge of the box, but the attack breaks down.
  • 7'
QPR win a free kick on the right flank and Bosingwa aims for giant defender Chris Samba at the far post, but he is unable to turn towards goal after stretching to control the overhit effort.
  • 6'
Right-back Bosingwa concedes a corner which Jean Beausejour takes and aims towards the penalty spot. His cross is overhit but Wigan are able to maintain possession.
  • 5'

Townsend cuts inside from the right flank in between Beausejour and Figueroa but his teammates are unable to control his cross.
  • 2'
James McCarthy concedes a free kick in the middle of the park and QPR sweep the ball out to Andros Townsend on the right flank but he is dispossessed.
  • 1'
The referee gets the game underway at Loftus Road!
  • James McManus at Loftus Road: "He's been referred to as Harry Houdini in some parts, but should Harry Redknapp's side lose this crunch clash against Wigan today at Loftus Road, you just watch QPR disappear from the Premier League. We're moments away from kick-off now and there's a real tense atmosphere around the ground. The fans know this game is a must-win otherwise they can all but kiss goodbye their top flight status and a large portion of their expensively-assembled squad."
  • James McManus at Loftus Road: "A few interesting statistics surrounding today’s game - Wigan have lost all nine league games this season in which they’ve failed to trouble the scorers, picking up just ten points on the road in total. QPR on the other hand are the top flight’s joint-lowest goalscorers with Stoke with just 28 goals in 31 outings. They key battle-ground looks set to be which side is the most resilient at the back this afternoon at Loftus Road in what promises to be an evenly-contested fixture."
  • James McManus at Loftus Road: "Harry Redknapp states in his programme notes today about QPR’s survival chances: “It’s all still to play for. There’s seven games left and we’ve got to win five of them if we can - starting against Wigan today. We need to win today, there’s no doubt about that. A win today could make all the difference.” With games still to come against Everton, Arsenal and LIverpool, the 66-year-old will have earmarked this as a chance to pick up all three points and close the gap on those above them, of which Wigan are one. This has all the hallmarks of a relegation six-pointer."
  • James McManus at Loftus Road: "QPR manager Harry Redknapp makes one change to the team that lost 3-2 to Fulham in their last league outing, with Junior Hoilett replacing Adel Taarabt, who drops to the bench. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez names an unchanged team from the one that beat Norwich 1-0 at home last weekend, with Joel Robles continuing in goal ahead of Ali Al-Habsi."
  • Wigan: Robles; Scharner, Alcaraz, Figueroa; Boyce, McCarthy, Gomez, Beausejour; McManaman, Kone, Maloney. Subs Al Habsi, Caldwell, Di Santo, Henriquez, McArthur, Espinoza, Stam.
  • QPR: Cesar; Bosingwa, Samba, Hill, Traore; Townsend, Jenas, Mbia, Hoilett; Remy, Zamora. Substitutes: Green, Park, Taarabt, Mackie, Granero, Onuoha, Ben Haim.
  • James McManus LIVE from the ground: "Good afternoon from Loftus Road where today relegation-threatened QPR host fellow strugglers WIgan. Harry Redknapp needs a victory this afternoon for his side to stand any chance of beating the drop this season. However, having won three of their last four in the league, Roberto Martinez's side are enjoying their customary end of campaign upturn in form, but can they replicate last term's six wins in their last eight down the home straight? With Aston Villa winning yesterday away at Stoke and the bottom of the table becoming even more congested than ever, they may have to."
