Player Ratings: Everton 2-0 Manchester City

A great performance sends the Toffees fifth, despite going a man down in the second half as goals from Leon Osman and Nikica Jelavic down the Premier League champions

Wasn’t really given any headaches to speak of in the initial 45 minutes apart from the odd long distance effort to stop, thanks mostly to the keeper’s solid defence. The second half brought a bit more to the plate for Tim Howard’s replacement, with a double save from Tevez and Milner in quick succession keeping Everton in the lead at a vital time of the match. Another stop from a Zabaleta chance made a massive difference.

Working his magic down the left, the attacking full-back gave Everton plenty of energy on the flanks, as well as some opportunistic crosses into the City area. The England man also stuck to his defensive duties and did well to stop City’s wide men.

  • John Heitinga

    John Heitinga

Strong against Dzeko and made sure that the Bosnian striker had a tough time in the Everton third, thanks to the Dutchman’s great covering play and interventions. His tackling and positioning in the second half ensured Everton stayed in the lead.

Kept Tevez at bay for most of the game, although the City attacker was able to get one or two efforts on Mucha’s goal, albeit from a long way out most of the time. The defender was not as active as his Dutch partner, but certainly made a difference.

The former Manchester United man was one of Everton’s quieter men on the field, with the midfielder not making too much of an impact and playing a more subtle role to those around him, passing well and keeping hold of the ball.

  • Leon Osman

Leon Osman Top of the Match

The midfield man was sporting the captain’s armband in the place of Phil Neville and certainly made an impact with Everton’s first and only goal, smashing it from about 25 yards into Joe Hart’s top corner. Osman kept it up with a strong presence in the midfield battle.

Steven Pienaar Flop of the Match

Not a great day for the Everton man who flew in on Gareth Barry to earn himself a booking with less than 30 minutes played. On the hour mark, the midfielder was sent off for a recklessly late challenge on Garcia and left his side fighting to keep their narrow lead with 10 men

  • Seamus Coleman

    Seamus Coleman

An encouraging performance from the young Irishman, who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time to make great tackles and interventions, a top performance.

  • Marouane Fellaini

    Marouane Fellaini

The Belgian’s first noticeable impact on the game was a mistimed and crushing tackle on James Milner, one that got the attacker booked and banned for the next two games as a result of it being his 10th caution of the season. The Belgian had a decent day on the ball, but his form from the loss against Wigan looks to have carried on with this game.

  • Kevin Mirallas

    Kevin Mirallas

The midfielder had a great goal wrongly ruled out for offside in the opening 20 minutes, but that did not put the Belgian down and the attacker kept the pressure on City to help Everton create new chances before eventually being subbed off.

  • Victor Anichebe

    Victor Anichebe

Replacing the misfiring Jelavic, Anichebe put in another solid shift for Everton and his hard work up top gave his opposing defenders something to think about. However, a lack of chances on Hart’s goal left his performance just lacking that important edge.

Came on late in the day, but sealed the game with a sumptuous finish past Hart on the counter.

The Scotsman replaced Mirallas in the second-half, but merely added fresh legs and was not much of an impact sub.

  • Joe Hart

Despite Everton’s dominance in the opening half, the England international only had a couple of dangerous moments to deal with. However, the goalkeeper was left flat-footed when Leon Osman’s blasted opener curled into his top corner. The second half was a little busier, and could not stop Jelavic’s brilliant goal at the death.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    Pablo Zabaleta

Had a few chances on goal, one of which being well stopped by Mucha, but was busy defending for most of the game, predominantly doing well.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

    Aleksandar Kolarov

The wing-back did a good job going forward and created a few chances for the visitors, but nothing too clear-cut and as a result, City found themselves with little to work with.

  • Kolo Toure

    Kolo Toure

Had a hard time against Anichebe who was very strong, but for most of it did well enough to keep Everton away from goal. However, the Ivorian was caught flat-footed during a counterattack from the hosts at the death which saw Jelavic score their second.

  • Matija Nastasic

    Matija Nastasic

The defender had a busy afternoon and generally did a decent job, but like Toure, struggled to react to Everton’s late counter that saw the game put to bed.

  • James Milner

The former Villa man could not really make his impact on the game and had a hard time of it against Everton’s much more energised midfielders.

  • Javi García

    Javi García

Not a particularly great day for Garcia, who did not add a great deal to the game for City and never gave Everton much to deal with.

  • Gareth Barry
    6
    36

    Gareth Barry

An average display from the man in the middle for City, with Barry keeping his team moving through the middle, but not really adding anything spectacular to the fore.

  • David Silva

    David Silva

Often the maestro in the middle, but the Spaniard struggled with Everton’s impetus to get ahead of City in the game and the former Valencia man never really looked like offering anything particularly magical.

  • Edin Dzeko

    Edin Dzeko

The striker had very little in the way of goal-bound opportunities, the Bosnia international being restricted by the confident John Heitinga to soft shots and not much else.

  • Carlos Tévez

The Argentine had his chances on goal, but a lack of clinical ability let him down, but credit to Much for denying the former United man on a couple of occasions.
