  As expected, a positive performance when going forward even if his crosses only served to put pressure on the Stoke defence and not create any chances. However, left a gaping hole for Walters to run into in the build-up to the penalty.

  Looked solid alongside Mbiwa, making a couple of top interceptions, while his unusual attempts to distract Asmir Begovic in the build-up to Yohan Cabaye's free-kick may have played some small part in the goal.

  Captain in the absence of Coloccini, the midfielder turned in another classy performance. Saw two superb efforts drift just wide of Begovic's far post, while his lofted through ball created the best chance of the game for Gouffran. There was no near miss with his perfectly executed free-kick however.

  Another powerful display from the French midfielder, and the driving force behind Newcastle's attack. You get the feeling he still hasn't hit his stride in English football - a fact that shouldn't detract from his performance this afternoon, but serve as a warning to forthcoming opponents.

  Much of the same from the Argentine. Going forward, he at times can slow Newcastle down and produces very little, but is always on hand to track back and tuck in, which is surely the reason for his continued inclusion in Pardew's starting XI.

  Started brightly, but old habits soon reared their head. Every good pass was met with a loose one, while his rash challenge in Jon Walters led to a penalty and almost cost his side the game.

  Was about to be on the receiving end of a scathing review after a 90 minute display without any real quality. However, his coolly taken finish in the dying moments of the game earned Newcastle a vital three points and a much-needed confidence boost for himself
