The Black Cats strolled past Sam Allardyce's out-of-sorts Hammers at the Stadium of Light, with Sebastian Larsson, Adam Johnson and James McClean on the scoresheet

    Simon Mignolet

Made a good save from Jarvis' shot to prevent an equaliser, but otherwise went untested for the large part until he showed great reflexes to thwart Vaz Te's late effort.

  • John O'Shea

    John O'Shea

Looked slightly rusty on his return from injury in the opening stages, but all things considered, could not have wished for an easier game to ease himself back into action.

  • Titus Bramble

    Titus Bramble

Top display from Bramble, who was colossal at centre-back. Solid in the air, while he repeatedly showed the West Ham forwards who was boss with a series of strong, but perfectly-timed tackles.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    3.50

    Sebastian Larsson

Heeded the home crowd's calls to shoot early in the first half and duly delivered with a fantastic opening goal. Defied the odds alongside Vaughan to dominate West Ham's midfield pairing of Diarra and Nolan.

  • Craig Gardner

    3.50

    Craig Gardner

Looked more comfortable at left-back then fellow midfielder Colback in the opposite defensive position. Solid in the tackle and in his distribution.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Started shakily, particularly against the forays of Demel, but soon found his feet in defence. As the game progressed it was Colback putting pressure on his opposite number, and he was unlucky not to score, instead seeing his effort crash off the post.

  • David Vaughan

    David Vaughan

Martin O'Neill will be buoyed by his display, with Vaughan more than reliable in possession and linking up play well throughout.

  • Adam Johnson

    3.50

    Adam Johnson

A lively showing from Johnson, who maybe would could have made more of an impact given the freedom of attack handed to Sunderland by their opponents. Still, finished neatly to double the lead.

  • James McClean
    6
    0
    3.50

    James McClean

Alert and always open for the ball, the young Irishman's display was promising, if he remains wasteful at times. Still, finished with aplomb from a tight angle to wrap up a great afternoon on Wearside.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

Stéphane Sessegnon Top of the Match

At times the Beninese attacker was majestic, turning the West Ham back line inside out with his twisting, turning runs. Played a crucial role in the build-up to Sunderland's second, bursting forward on the break, before jinking through the visitors' defence as McClean hit home Sunderland's third.

  • Steven Fletcher

    2
    3.00

    Steven Fletcher

May not have got his name on the scoresheet - only the offside flag prevented him from doing so - but proved a nuisance throughout, holding the ball up well and making space which allowed his team-mates to plough forward.

Substitutions

  • Alfred N'diaye

    Alfred N'diaye

Came on late in the game but almost opened the scoring with his first touch of the ball.

  • Connor Wickham

    2.50

    Connor Wickham

Handed a run out in place of Fletcher, and looked lively if failing to get any real opportunities on goal.

  • James McFadden

    James McFadden

Late cameo for the former Everton man.

  • Jussi Jaaskelainen
    3
    0
    2.50

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Could do very little for all three goals, even making a great save in the build-up to Sunderland's second, only to be let down by his defence's inability to clear the ball.

  • Winston Reid
    4

    3.00

    Winston Reid

It must have been a frustrating afternoon for the centre-back, who too often was the only man on hand to shackle Sessegnon and Fletcher. His own reputation continues to be bolstered, however.

  • James Collins
    0
    3
    1.00

James Collins Flop of the Match

Showed strength in the air, but was truly woeful on the ground. Repeatedly given the run around by Sessegnon before hobbling off to be replaced by Tomkins later in the first half.

  • Guy Demel
    0
    2
    2.00

    Guy Demel

Displayed good attacking intent down the right-hand flank, but the same could be said of his defensive duties, with McClean often allowed too much space and time on the wing.

  • Daniel Potts
    0
    3
    2.00

    Daniel Potts

Struggled with Johnson down the flank, but little can be expected of an inexperience 18-year-old when so many of his elders fail to show leadership.

  • Kevin Nolan
    1
    2
    2.00

    Kevin Nolan

As expected, the former Newcastle captain was the focus of boos from the home crowd, and did little to silence them. Despite his obvious strength, lost too many midfield battles against the less-accomplished pairing of Larsson and Vaughan.

  • Matthew Jarvis
    0
    1
    1.50

    Matthew Jarvis

At times the former Wolves man was non-existent, completely failing to take advantage of the out-of-position Craig Gardner.

  • Jack Collison
    0
    2
    2.00

    Jack Collison

Had a great chance to draw level midway through the first half but completely failed to control the ball in the box. His attacking intent soon relented, and he was understandably substituted at half-time.

  • Alou Diarra
    0
    2
    2.00

    Alou Diarra

Far too often Diarra was the only West Ham player to take stock and keep the ball, with his team-mates offering little option to release. However, he went AWOL at times, and his poor headed clearance teed up Larsson for his goal.

  • Joe Cole
    2
    2
    2.00

    Joe Cole

Very quiet display from the 31-year-old in contrast to his second West Ham debut last week.

  • Carlton Cole
    0
    2
    1.50

    Carlton Cole

Bullied by Bramble and O'Shea. His lack of movement and aerial strength will no doubt see future chances in the starting line-up curtailed, particularly with the arrival of Marouane Chamakh and the soon-to-return Andy Carroll.

Substitutions

  • James Tomkins
    3
    2
    2.00

    James Tomkins

Came on in place of the injured Collins with 10 minutes of the first half remaining. Similarly struggled with Sessegnon.

  • Ricardo Vaz Te
    2
    2
    2.50

    Ricardo Vaz Te

Looked lively after his introduction, and at least proved problematic for Sunderland's defence.

  • Marouane Chamakh
    16
    4
    2.00

    Marouane Chamakh

Did very little to suggest his time in English football will improve at West Ham following the loan switch from Arsenal.
