Parried the ball straight into danger in the 52nd minute but reacted well to deny Balotelli from the rebound. He was very vocal towards his defenders and got down to Diamanti's powerful strike in the closing stages.
Made a huge number of excellent attacking runs, but his touch let him down in the area after five minutes. Put in some great crosses but was soon penned back by Balzaretti. Was guilty of overdoing it at times but made some key blocks.
Did not foray into the opposing half often enough and as he pulled in tightly due to the overrun midfield he left Young to fend off Abate. Finally charged forward in second-half stoppage time to cross but Rooney missed the target. Missed England's fourth and crucial penalty.
Dealt with the long ball in the air on most occasions but struggled when it went in behind. Made a fantastic interception to stop Balotelli shooting in 25th and remained fairly solid from then on in.
Coped with Balotelli well enough for most of the game and thwarted him in front of goal with a last-ditch clearance on the stroke of half-time. Remained tight in defence, forcing Italy to play it over the top.
Performed excellently in the early stages with a great array of passing. Was forced to defend more as the game continued and while he made some strong challenges but was guilty of backing off too much. Scored England's first penalty in the shootout.
A hugely disappointing display. He never really ran at the defenders which is where he is most dangerous. His involvement was minimal and he only provided a narrow obstacle when tracking back. Lost England's advantage in the shootout by hitting the crossbar.
Criticised for not offering enough adventure on the right but showed plenty in the early stages. Was always available to help Johnson in defence and worked hard throughout the match but was replaced on the hour mark.
A combative display as he hounded the Italian players regularly but as they began to enjoy more possession he was too wary of going in for a tackle. Could get nowhere near the ball as England struggled to influence proceedings.
Got in to good positions and linked the play through midfield during England's good start but he soon became sloppy. As his side were forced to defend he saw little of the ball and became increasingly frustrated. Put England ahead in the shootout with their second penalty.
Dropped back to add numbers in the middle but it was not where he wanted to be and it reduced the outlets available in attack. Linked well with Rooney in the 32nd minute but really should have tested Buffon.
Came on for Parker in the first half of extra time to add some fresh legs to midfield but he failed to make an impact.
Made an instant impact as his cross created a shooting opportunity for Young but the Aston Villa midfielder mishit his effort. Failed to stretch the Italians with his pace as much as Hodgson would surely have hoped.
Intimidated the Azzurri defenders as he used his strength well to muscle in on defenders. Gave England a focal point in attack and also aided the defence with some towering headers from set pieces.
Stayed on his feet to deny Johnson early on but looked shaky with a needless punch soon after. He was faced with very little for the majority of the remainder in a fairly comfortable evening.
Pushed forward continually throughout the first half and was used regularly. His presence on the left stretched the England defence and created extra space but he went quiet in the second half.
Largely underused in the first half with his only contribution being an excellent recovery tackle on Rooney. Was far more influential after the break and got a number of dangerous crosses into the box.
Provided excellent cover as the last man in defence for the Azzuri. His presence helped limit the counterattacking of England and showed a good turn of pace to deny Young from getting on the ball.
Struggled to cope when he had players running at him but that only lasted until midway through the first half. For the rest of the game he was fairly comfortable as England rarely posed a threat in attack.
Darted forward from midfield to create the first opportunity for Italy but his influence in the rest of the first period was minimal. Created two of his side's best chances in the second half but De Rossi and Nocerino failed to convert.
Rattled the post with a sumptuous volley in the fourth minute and he continued to play a pivotal role in the game. Policed the middle of the park but wasted a golden opportunity as he shot wide from eight yards after the break.
Displayed tremendous craft but at times it seemed somewhat unnecessary, the simple pass may have been more effective. Blazed over early in the second half when he should have tested Hart. Stepped up second for Italy and missed the target.
Played a few good passes as he was afforded too much space on the ball, creating a great opportunity with an exquisite pass before the break. He continued to dictate the game in the second half and pulled all the strings. Put his penalty down the middle with a classy Panenka.
A typically fiery performance from the striker but he took a while to really get going. He had three great chances to find the net for his team but after being thwarted by both centre-backs he then saw an effort saved by Hart. Scored from the spot in the shoot-out.
Looked dangerous when dropping off the defenders into pockets of space but he ran into dead-ends more often than not. He struggled to cope with the physicality of the England defence.
Replaced Ignazio Abate in second-half stoppage time and was booked for a late tackle on Young. Stayed back more than usual as Diamanti dominated the right side.
Came on in the 80th minute for De Rossi. Did everything right when getting in behind in the 89th minute but Johnson blocked his effort. Continued to look very lively in midfield. Had a goal correctly ruled out in the 115th minute. Scored Italy's fourth penalty.
Replaced Cassano in the 78th minute and tested Hart with a wicked strike three minutes later. He hit the outside of the post in extra time as his cross bent in dangerously and was unlucky that his side could not finish from his creative genius. Scored the winning penalty.
