Player Ratings: Norwich City 2-1 Sunderland

The Canaries went two up before Craig Gardner prompted a Black Cats fightback but, thanks to some good goalkeeping and great defending, they held on for the win

    Mark Bunn

Had virtually nothing to think about for the first 42 minutes, making one good save from Rose, but will likely feel that he could have got at least a hand to Gardner’s shot which resulted in a goal. Made a few good stops in the second half to secure the win.

  • Steven Whittaker

    Steven Whittaker

Hassled and harried Adam Johnson time and time again, generally to good effect, but he lost out to the winger late on in the first half with Gardner’s goal coming seconds later and he would have been disappointed that he was not able to deal with it. Performed well aside from the one lost battle.

  • S. Bassong

    S. Bassong

Opened the scoring for Norwich as he muscled his way on to Bradley Johnson’s deflected flick-on and celebrated with a rather amusing dance. Did well enough at the other end, rarely showing the mistake-prone tendencies which he usually exhibits.

Probably would have expected a tough evening but, in truth, he looked rather comfortable for most of the match. McClean cut inside on the rare occasions when he actually looked interested, while he never even tried to take on the Spanish defender.

By no means a Chris Hughton favourite but certainly justified his selection today, making a number of crucial interceptions and blocks, most notably one to prevent Wickham scoring early in the second half.

  • Bradley Johnson

    Bradley Johnson

His only goal of the season came as he headed in the winner against Arsenal and he was causing problems in the air again against Sunderland, as Bassong knocked in his flick-on. Battled excellently before half-time but, as Sunderland upped the ante thereafter, he and Tettey struggled. They held on for the win, however.

  • Robert Snodgrass

    Robert Snodgrass

His free kicks are always dangerous and he caused havoc yet again, putting the ball into the area brilliantly for Bassong’s goal, but in open play the Scot was quiet before being subbed for Elliott Bennett with 25 minutes to go.

  • Anthony Pilkington

    Anthony Pilkington

Terrific for the first 50 minutes but went very quiet thereafter before being switched to the right. Gave Bardsley all sorts to think about at times and scored a great goal, destroying Cuellar before stroking home confidently. Not one of the Premier League's most technically gifted wingers but he gets results.

  • Wesley Hoolahan

    Wesley Hoolahan

Not one of his best matches of the season but he still had his moments as he buzzed in and around Holt, while he also looked to get in beyond the big man, something that he does not ordinarily do. He was always positive when he had the ball but he was not given it enough.

  • Alexander Tettey

    Alexander Tettey

A powerful presence in the centre for Norwich, he offered a lot while the hosts were in charge of the match, passing excellently, breaking up play and surged forward on a number of occasions. However, when Sunderland were the better side, the Norwegian was a bit of a passenger at times.

  • Grant Holt

    3.00

    Grant Holt

Dominated Kilgallon in the first half and certainly threw his weight around in the second period, but he found himself very isolated after half-time. The visitors pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half, meaning that Holt had few opportunities to impress.

Substitutions

  • Jonny Howson

    Jonny Howson

On to secure the midfield in the last 10 minutes and the hosts held on for the three points, so job done well.

  • Elliott Bennett

    Elliott Bennett

Replaced Snodgrass with about 25 minutes left but, with Norwich on the back foot virtually the whole time, he had no impact.

  • Simon Mignolet

    Simon Mignolet

Was not given much chance for either Norwich goal, and his defence hardly helped him out before half-time, while in the second period he had very little to do as the Black Cats went in search of an equaliser.

  • Phil Bardsley

    2.50

    Phil Bardsley

A mixed bag from the former Manchester United man as he put in a few good tackles but he often struggled to keep a lid on Pilkington and offered little support in attack.

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Most of Norwich’s attacks came through the middle or down the left, therefore Rose did not have a great deal with which to contend. Snodgrass often threatened but the left-back did a respectable job on the Scottish winger.

  • Matthew Kilgallon

    Matthew Kilgallon

Received a booking within the first three minutes and that was perhaps a sign of things to come as he panicked and bundled Holt to the floor. Rarely looked any more competent as his clearances were often dangerous and Holt dominated him. Missed a glorious chance with a real defender's finish.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

Perhaps unluckily played a part in Bassong’s goal as Bradley Johnson’s header came off him before landing to the Canaries defender but, at the same time, he should not have been beaten in the air by the smaller Norwich man. The Spaniard was then beaten so easily by Pilkington for the winger’s goal. Looked more composed than Kilgallon but barely an improvement in terms of reliability.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

The Swede and Gardner were overrun at times, while Larsson had no answer to Tettey’s power once the Norwegian got marching. His passing although accurate was a bit conservative, with Fletcher having few balls to run on to while actually on the pitch, and only a couple more were played into his feet.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

Norwich controlled possession for the first half meaning he did not have much impact on until just before the break, when he lashed in a great strike. However, after half-time he was far better as he always looked for possession, hit the post and had another shot cleared off the line.

  • Adam Johnson

    Adam Johnson

Although not yet hitting the heights expected of him since his summer move, after a quiet first half he had a decent game. The winger claimed an assist for Gardner’s strike and saw a lot more of the ball in attacking positions in the second half. Endured a tough battle against Whittaker but managed to force his way back into the game despite a poor first half.

  • James McClean

    James McClean

The young Irish winger was championed last season, and rightly so, but he just has not got going yet this term. At Carrow Road he was practically anonymous for large stretches and, when he did get the ball, he was so wasteful, giving possession away or firing miles over. Not a good day at the office.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

    Stéphane Sessegnon

The Benin international found himself crowded out a great deal in the first period but, after the break, many of Sunderland’s attacks went through him. The ex-Paris Saint-Germain man put several dangerous balls into the area and caused a lot of problems in the whole.

  • Steven Fletcher

Steven Fletcher Flop of the Match

The Scot was withdrawn at the break after a very, very quiet first 45 minutes, hardly touching the ball. While he was on, Norwich had the better of things. Once he was off, Sunderland dominated.

Substitutions

    Connor Wickham

Given a rather frosty reception due to his Ipswich Town background and, after struggling at first, he started to look dangerous, almost scoring early on only to be denied by Bennett. Was quiet, give or take a couple of moments.
