Gael Clichy (foot) will sit out the visit of Everton and joins Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Micah Richards (knee) on the treatment table, while James Milner (hamstring), who scored in the 2-0 win over Wigan, is a doubt.
Mario Balotelli, the other goalscorer on Wednesday, will most likely make way for top goalscorer Edin Dzeko, while Joleon Lescott will be hoping to be handed a start against his former side.
Everton's injury woes continue to mount, with Leighton Baines (hamstring) and Nikica Jelavic (illness) both doubts for the tie despite coming through the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, but the latter is expected to be passed fit.
Elsewhere, Seamus Coleman (knock), Kevin Mirallas (hamstring) and Victor Anchebe (knock) all face late fitness tests ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium, with David Moyes hopeful on all three. Phil Neville (knee) is not expected back until the New Year after undergoing surgery.

The Frenchman has largely failed to live up to his £25 million fee since moving from Arsenal last season, but will be desperate to kick-start his campaign after a hamstring injury, and increasing competition for places, has limited his first-team exposure.

The striker has not hit the form which saw him notch nine goals in 13 Premier League outings since his January move last season, with just five to show in the same period this term. However, the Croatian will be keen to test his ability for the first time against Manchester City after joining the club the last time Everton played the champions - winning 1-0.
Everton have failed to live up to their blistering start with six stalemates in their last eight league games, showing an inability to finish teams off.
City, meanwhile, while boasting a points tally of six fewer than after 14 games last season, remain unbeaten and have dropped just two points at home this season, but come again a side which has beaten them five times out of the last six games in all competitions. Another draw seems likely here.
