  • Wigan have a spectacular comeback victory thanks to Jordi Gomez to celebrate after defeating Reading in a match full of excitement. The Latics showed more attacking ambition in the first half but were threatened by the Royals' set piece expertise that eventually saw Sean Morrison net the opening goal. Wigan however began the second half with as much gusto as before and the introduction of Franco Di Santo instigated the creation of several chances down the left flank from the left foot of the excellent Jean Beausejour. Each had a hand in the equaliser after Jordi Gomez' tapped in after keeper Adam Federici fumbled his shot. The Chilean crossed for Di Santo to head in for what he thought was the lead, but was controversially ruled offside in the build up, before his excellent cross set up Jordi Gomez to head his side ahead just a minute later. Reading had been unlucky to see a penalty appeal dismissed after a foul on Jay Tabb minutes after Gomez' first goal, but they benefited from an astonishing error by Al Al-Habsi to get an equaliser from an own goal with just over ten minutes remaining to set up a thrilling finale to an end to end game. But Wigan grabbed the winner thanks to a spectacular hat-trick from Jordi Gomez. Roberto Martinez can reflect positively on his team's sustained menace in attack and brave mentality, while Brian McDermott will be disappointed to lose another lead and again travel home without an away win yet this season. His side cleverly exploited the hosts' absence of Gary Caldwell with a plan to win a series of set pieces to exploit through the delivery of left back Nicky Shorey, but were ultimately defeated by the home side's vibrant attack and remain above the bottom three only on goal difference.
  • Jack Gaughan at the DW Stadium: "Jordi Gomez, chastised by the home support in the first half, completes an unbelievable hat-trick at the death to give Wigan the points. Quite remarkable. This had everything. An own goal, a hat-trick and missed chances. But what's important is Wigan take the points."

David Jones makes an interception in the centre of the park, and Jordi Gomez plays Franco Di Santo in behind the defence, who looks to curl his shot into the right corner of the goal but sees Adam Federici tip it round the post.
  • Striker Franco Di Santo is brought on for playmaker Shaun Maloney, who has sustained an injury. Up front, Wigan have threatened in the first half, and it is in defence that they must look to improve.
  • Jack Gaughan at the DW Stadium: "Reading go in 1-0 up in drizzly conditions befitting this season so far for both the visitors and Wigan. Sean Morrison’s header is the difference between the two as the Latics are booed off."
  • Wigan's weakness at set pieces might owe something to the absence of regular captain Gary Caldwell, and Roberto Martinez' side have not yet salvaged a point from a losing position. He does however have Franco Di Santo available to appear from the bench, whose power and link-up play could help add more directness to Wigan's game in the second half.
  • Reading head in a goal ahead of hosts Wigan after a first half that was open and end-to-end from the outset until just before the break itself. Wigan opened the game with style and attacking intent, particularly on the left flank through Jean Beausejour creating several opportunities for Arouna Kone in particular, with Jordi Gomez and Shaun Maloney displaying some good touches. Reading however grew into the game and put Wigan under significant pressure after around twenty minutes with a string of set pieces. The Royals stuck to this game plan and went on to win several more corners and free kicks, through the tricky Jobi McAnuff in particular. Nicky Shorey's delivery was a consistent threat and eventually Sean Morrison was able to take advantage to send his side into the break a goal ahead.

Reading get the game underway at the DW Stadium.
  • Jack Gaughan at the DW Stadium: "Welcome to a brisk DW Stadium to what looks, on paper, to be the drabbest Premier League match of the season, let alone this weekend. But with Wigan only winning once in front of their home supporters so far and Reading earning their first three points of the campaign last week, this one could prove to be interesting. We’re not really sure which Wigan will turn up as their topsy-turvy form continues, but their brand of football remains lovely to watch and there should be goals for the visitors on the break."
  • Reading's Brian McDermott names an unchanged line up, with Hal Robson-Kanu on the right wing ahead of Garath McCleary on the bench, and last week's scorer of two goals Adam Le Fondre partnered by ex-Wigan striker Jason Roberts up front. Pavel Pogrebnyak and Noel Hunt start on the bench.
  • Roberto Martinez is missing injured Gary Caldwell at centre back so defender Emmerson Boyce moves inside to cover, with Ronnie Stam taking his place at right wing back. David Jones comes in at centre midfield to replace Ben Watson, who broke his leg last week, as the returning James McArthur is deemed fit enough only for the bench. Franco Di Santo is named on the bench, and attacking midfielder Jordi Gomez takes his place in the attacking three.
