Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-0 Swansea City

Carlos Tevez's long-range strike near the hour mark claimed all three points for the Blues against a stubborn Swans side, with Micah Richards stretchered off clutching his knee

Joe Hart Top of the Match

Made good reactionary saves to deny Michu on a couple of occasions. He commanded his penalty area well and organised the defence in front of him with the confidence you would expect from England’s No.1.

  • Micah Richards

    Micah Richards

Despite his midweek spat with Roberto Mancini he started at full-back and spent most of his time pushing forward as the hosts dominated possession. When he was called on in defensive situations he timed his tackles perfectly and read the danger well to deny Michu in the air. His afternoon ended early after picking up a nasty-looking knee injury 10 minutes from time.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

The City captain looked like he was having a walk in the park as the stale Swansea attack rarely threatened. He managed the danger of Michu well and wasn’t worried by the pace of Routledge down the Swansea left.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

Aleksandar Kolarov Flop of the Match

Asked to play higher up almost as a left winger and he struggled to get into the game and have any impact on it. His first-half performance was summed up by his last involvement in the game of sending a free kick high into the upper tier of the stands. He was replaced by Balotelli at half-time.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Looked to push forward as much as possible to give support to Kolarov down the left but when in good positions his final ball lacked the quality Tevez and Aguero needed. The skill and trickery of Hernandez didn’t seem to worry the Frenchman and he kept him on a tight leash for the majority of the match.

  • Matija Nastasic

    Matija Nastasic

Worked very well alongside Kompany at the heart of the City defence, he had a fairly uneventful afternoon with little to deal with but his distribution and awareness was good to keep any potential attacks at bay.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Flattered to deceive in the opening half as he offered nothing to City going forward and struggled to get past Davies. He improved after the break but didn’t put in his best performance in a light blue shirt.

  • Gareth Barry

    Gareth Barry

A very reliable and solid performance from the midfielder but he just wasn’t able to ignite the spark under his side.

  • Yaya Touré

    Yaya Touré

Playing in a holding midfield role the Ivorian’s undoubted talent feels like it is not being used to its full potential. There’s no doubting he’s good in that role but he should be spending more time on the ball in the opposition half than his own.

  • Sergio Agüero

    Sergio Agüero

He links well with Tevez and does appear to be on the same wavelength but he just couldn’t get into the game in the first half as Swansea packed the midfield which meant passes into him struggled to through. He looked livelier in the second half coming in from the left-hand side and went close on a couple of occasions.

  • Carlos Tévez

    Carlos Tévez

A game of two halves for the Argentine, he cut a frustrated figure in the opening 45 minutes as City struggled to break through the congested Swansea defence but the introduction of Balotelli freed him up more and he had much more of an impact on the game. He got City's winner with a superb long-range strike that Vorm could get nowhere near.

He replaced Richard in the final ten minutes.

  • Mario Balotelli

    3.50

    Mario Balotelli

He replaced Kolarov at half-time and it was his introduction that brought the game into life as he freed up Tevez and Aguero to cause problems in the hole between midfield and attack. He could have scored early in the half but Vorm did well to push him wide and close off the angle.

  • Michel Vorm
    19

    Michel Vorm

Had very little to do in the first half when the hosts only had one shot on target but he was kept much busier in the second period. He did well to push Balotelli wide and narrow the striker’s shooting angle but Manchester City’s constant bombardment in the second half was too much and was unable to reach Tevez’s 60th-minute strike. Sadly that was the end of his game as he was stretchered off the pitch and replaced by Tremmel.

  • Chico

    3.00

    Chico

He was solid in the first half and the midfield shield enabled him to keep very close tabs on Tevez, but as the home side improved in the second half he struggled against the lively Balotelli.

  • Ashley Williams
    12
    2
    3.00

    Ashley Williams

He’s big, strong and good in the air which helped him have a good first half alongside Chico but Roberto Mancini’s half-time team talk brought Manchester City to life and he found it hard to keep up with Balotelli, Tevez and Aguero.

  • Ángel Rangel
    13
    2
    3.00

    Ángel Rangel

He kept Kolarov very quiet in the first half with close marking and some telling interceptions, however his second half was a little bit busier as the home side turned the screw and he had Aguero to deal with.

  • Ben Davies
    10
    3
    3.00

    Ben Davies

He coped with Nasri nicely in the first half, he didn’t give the Frenchman any opportunity to run at him and was quick challenge when he did get possession. He stuck to his task well throughout the game and made some good interceptions.

  • Leon Britton
    10
    2
    3.00

    Leon Britton

Did his best to get himself on the ball and try and get his side going but it was tough against the stronger Manchester City opponents. He formed a good protective wall in front of his back four which frustrated their hosts but it couldn’t last forever and slowly it was picked away at. He was replaced by Graham in the 72nd minute.

  • Michu
    33
    2
    3.50

    Michu

He led the line well for Swansea and was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet with some excellent chances. He drifted in between the two defenders regularly and was denied on a couple of occasions by the quick reactions of Hart.

  • Pablo Hernández
    13
    1
    2.50

    Pablo Hernández

He drifted in and out of the game, threatening on the counter-attack with his pace but he didn’t offer enough to keep the relentless Manchester City attacks at bay in the second half. He was replaced by Dyer in the 77th minute.

  • Wayne Routledge
    13
    2
    3.00

    Wayne Routledge

Looked very dangerous on the left-hand side and caused Clichy problems when he broke on the counter attack. Had his final delivery been better he could have created more for Michu, but all too often his crossing let him down.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    12

    3.00

    Jonathan De Guzmán

Calm and composed when in possession but gave the ball away cheaply at times which put his side in some trouble. Worked well with Britton and Ki but they were unable to keep their hosts at bay. He went within inches of levelling the game in the 75th minute but his long-range shot curled just wide of Hart’s right-hand post.

  • Sung-Yong Ki

    Sung-Yong Ki

A calming influence in the middle of the pitch, he kept his side moving well with neat precise passing but he left the creative side of things to others within his side.

Substitutions

  • Gerhard Tremmel

    Gerhard Tremmel

He replaced Vorm after Tevez’s goal and did well, he looked good on the ball and his distribution was neat and tidy. He didn’t really have a save to make as Manchester City sat back on their lead.

  • Nathan Dyer

    Nathan Dyer

Replaced Hernandez in the 77th minute and threatened with his pace but he was unable to find a way through the Manchester City defence.

  • Danny Graham

    Danny Graham

Replaced Britton in the 72nd minute to give Swansea something different up front but his chances were limited.
