QPR - Everton Preview: Hughes under pressure to get first win

The struggling Londoners face a tough challenge against David Moyes' Merseyside club who have started the season brightly, but may be missing their talisman Marouane Fellaini

Samba Diakite will return for the hosts after serving a one-match ban for his sending off against West Ham on October 2.

Manchester United loanee Fabio (hamstring) is due to return at left-back, while Clint Hill (head) is edging closer to match fitness in time for the Sunday afternoon clash.

Andy Johnson (knee) is definitely out for the hosts, with a return date scheduled for March of next year.

Marouane Fellaini (knee) is unlikely to play for the visitors, but could make a swift comeback in spite of reports suggesting he could face weeks on the sidelines.

The imposing attacking midfielder missed both of Belgium's recent World Cup qualifying matches, but Moyes will be hoping he can recover in time.

Darron Gibson (groin) and Tony Hibbert (calf) are set for Toffees comebacks after missing recent games.

  • The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw in March this year.
  • Sunday's game will be David Moyes' 200th away match as Everton manager.
  • If Tim Howard (pictured) and/or Phil Neville play and win, they will be the first Everton players to have started and won 100 Premier League matches.
  • Mark Hughes played 22 times for Everton in 2000.
  • Hughes was the first ever player to score against Everton for a domestic and a European team: Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
  • Due to Brad Friedel being dropped for Tottenham recently, Tim Howard now holds the best current record for successive Premier League appearances in the Premier League, with 190 games.

The tricky midfielder led QPR to promotion from the Championship in 2011 with fantastic virtuoso displays, but failed to recapture that form for long spells last season. However, the Moroccan is beginning to show his rich promise with two fine goals against West Ham and West Brom this month. With Mark Hughes declaring the 23-year-old's attitude has improved, expect him to be at the heart of the home side's attacking play on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was subject to speculation over a move to Manchester United in the summer, and the left-back's performances in this campaign have shown why. Baines is one of the league's finest attacking threats on the left, linking well with Steven Pienaar down the flank, and also defends extremely competently. With QPR's defence making a catalogue of errors this season, Baines' crossing ability from the wing and his accurate set-pieces could unlock a shaky back line at any time.
Despite the relative positions of both sides, the result may well hinge on whether Marouane Fellaini is fit for the visitors. If the Belgian plays, it is hard to see how QPR can cope with his aerial ability, seeing as how they were completely unable to deal with Andy Carroll in the recent loss to West Ham. However, Moyes will have to adapt his side's approach if Fellaini is missing, which could provide Hughes with the opportunity to take the initiative, especially with Adel Taarabt in eye-catching form. The Toffees should prove too strong on Sunday though, with Rangers still without a win all season.
